Indian Railways gets first ‘Make in India’ electric locomotive with regenerative braking; what’s special
By: Nikita Prasad | Updated: February 10, 2019 11:09 PM
Meanwhile, under the Make in India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch three big Indian Railways projects this month.

Indian Railways’ “first” electric locomotive with a regenerative system: Historical ‘Make In India’ project flagged off for Indian Railways! The country’s first electric locomotive with a regenerative system has been developed by PSU BHEL for Indian Railways has been flagged off from its Jhansi plant. The state-run organization BHEL has developed the state-of-the-art regeneration system through in-house R&D efforts for the railway network’s fleet of conventional electric locomotives, according to a recent PTI report. The regenerative technology helps avoid loss of heat energy when the brakes are applied and also feeds the energy back to the overhead power lines.

The concept of developing the energy-efficient regeneration system was proposed by the Railway Ministry. Further, BHEL responded to the national transporter by successfully developing the technology in-house, thus giving an impetus to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The country’s first such regenerative 5,000 HP WAG-7 electric locomotive was flagged off from the company’s Jhansi plant.

Presently the electric locomotives in India have a dynamic braking system where the energy generated during the application of brakes gets wasted in the form of heat. According to a tweet shared by the Ministry of Railways, this regenerative braking system in conventional DC (direct current) locomotive has been developed for the first time in the history of worldwide traction. Indian Railways along with BHEL had undertaken this project of modifying its WAG7 locomotive. The project being a ‘Make in India’ initiative, will lead to a cost saving of Rs 25 lakh per locomotive per year.

Meanwhile, under the Make in India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch three big Indian Railways projects this month. Vande Bharat Express or Train 18, is India’s first engineless, fastest self-propelled train will be flagged off from New Delhi Railway Station. PM Modi will also flag off Indian Railways’ first-ever converted-locomotive in a major event at Varanasi. The diesel locomotive has been converted into electric traction during its midlife rehabilitation, for the first time. Lastly, he will lay the foundation stone for the 17 km long new broad gauge railway line connecting Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu.

Absolutely right..
All twitter and social media users have to HYPHENATE China-terror-pakistan into one single sentence in all their posts
But Chinese foreign office guys don’t care about social media.

There was a tweet recently from a Russian journo, apparently he wrote something negative about China in a Russian article. The next day he got a call from Chinese embassy/foreign office saying that unless he withdraws his article he won’t be allowed to come to China.

Even Russians are towing Chinese line. Long way to go....

Like I keep saying, our absolute focus should be to double our economy ASAP(we are at 192 lakh crores now).

china really really care for the OPTICS part..
Social media should give them the optics that is due and necessary and which the chinese ordered from the world nations with their actions of appeasing terror nation like pakistan

Ground Report - Target 2025: Shift in India's defence production

This Ground Report focuses on the paradigm shift in India's defence production scenario. After the Make in India campaign was launched by Prime minister Narendra Modi, the defence sector underwent several changes. A new thrust was given to the sector in order to make it not just self reliant, but also a big exporter of defence products. To achieve this, the NDA government came up with Vision 2025

Foxconn will begin from July the commercial production of iPhone X range of smartphones for Apple from its 160-acre factory off Chennai.
CHENNAI: Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn will begin from July the commercial production of iPhoneX range of smartphones for Apple from its 160-acre factory off Chennai, people aware of Foxconn’s India plans told ET.

“Foxconn will begin with the iPhoneX (range) from the Chennai plant. The plans are to step up production capacity and diversify to even higher models going forward,” said an official privy to the company’s plans, on conditions of anonymity.

Sustained increase in manufacturing will depend on, among other factors, the continuation of a favourable incentive regime into the next government, the official said. Mails sent to Foxconn and Apple seeking comment remained unanswered.

The company began its India manufacturing journey through another Taiwanese company Wistron, which had started with the iPhone SE from its factory near Bengaluru two years ago and later advanced to iPhone 6S model. Wistron now makes iPhone 7, a sign analysts foresee as a bump-up in local manufacture of multinational technology companies keen on the Indian market. Around 290 million smartphones were assembled in India in 2018 up from 58 million in 2014, according to data from the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association.

“In the short-term, the Differential Duty and the Phased Manufacturing Programme worked as far as import substitution is concerned. Now the challenge is to move from 290 million to 500 million phones and then to one billion by 2025,” Pankaj Mohindroo, National president for ICEA, said.

^^^ Our focus should be on Making them in India... Instead of just assembling them here. Govt. should push at least 30% of manufacturing by value.

We've already reached 17% value addition compare to mere 6% in 2016. Within 2 year we'll cross that 30% mark or more.
We can't get the full value manufacturing untill we start manufacturing Chipset Battery and Camera on our own.
Last time i checked we can't even make a decent camera on our own. Rest is software optimisation, programming and body design.

That's good, my Idea is to push it one by one. We should push for 30% then 50% then 75% and 100%.

The supply chain for electronics industry is also gradually shifting to India due to ''Make in India'.
Foxconn is already setting up a new plant in Chennai to manufacture PCBs.
And also Salcomp which manufactures chargers has 2 plants in Chennai and will be setting up another one.

India Imported $13 Billion Worth of Mobile Phone Components in 2018

FEBRUARY 22, 2019

February 22nd, 2019
The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s Phased Manufacturing Programme is running behind schedule. This has meant that the ‘Make in India’ plan for mobile phones has remained limited to assembly operations.

With the ‘Make in India’ plan for mobile phone manufacturing remaining largely about assembling, India had to import $13 billion worth of components in 2018, the latest analysis from Counterpoint Research shows.

According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, “Not many high-value components are being sourced from India. As a result, local value addition in India was at 17% during 2018. This helped the country save US$2.5 billion in forex but increased assembly operations in India led to imports of mobile phone components going up to US$13 billion.”

Counterpoint Research believes that the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) is running behind schedule as the implementation of customs duties under Phase III, which targets Display Assembly, Touch Panel/Cover Glass Assembly and Vibrator/Motor Ringer have been delayed.

Exhibit 1: Progress of PMP for mobile manufacturing in India

According to Pathak, the possibility of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), like Reliance Jio and several Chinese brands, to source chips locally is still nearly four to five years away. “Sourcing of chips locally will happen only once the component ecosystem for low-value components is strengthened and export incentives are brought into force,” he added.

Counterpoint Research finds that Reliance Jio was still catching up on the PMP and imported 40% of Jio Phones in 2018. In fact, Chinese players like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo had transitioned better from semi-knocked down (SKDs) to completely knocked down units (CKDs). These companies also have plans to scale up their local manufacturing operations, albeit limited to assembling only.

Half of the handsets sold in India in 2018 were imported as SKDs while only 34% were imported as CKDs. However, by the end of 2019, handsets imported as CKDs are forecasted to reach 75% while 25% will be in the form of SKDs.

“We think that the government will first push to localize the components or sub-components under PMP to drive value addition. This can lead a transition from SKDs to CKDs quickly over the next two years,” Pathak added.
While there has been a delay in the implementation of the PMP, India has made significant strides in developing its mobile manufacturing ecosystem. Local value addition has risen from a meagre 6% level in 2016 to 17% in 2018 and there are now 120 assembling plants in the country as compared to just two in 2014.

“India competes with China, Vietnam, and Indonesia when it comes to global smartphone manufacturing hubs. While China and Vietnam seem to be way ahead in terms of local value addition, India has surpassed Vietnam to become the second largest mobile phone manufacturer by volume. In doing so, the mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem in India has advanced and made the country a destination of interest for global component suppliers looking to expand their manufacturing,” said Hanish Bhatia, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research.

According to Bhatia, India offers a promising proposition for component suppliers, looking to set up a manufacturing base, with its low-cost and educated labor, a strong local market as well as its export potential thanks to the country’s proximity to the SAARC region, the Middle East and Africa.

Syska partners Suyin, Biometronic to start India's first mobile camera module factory; to invest Rs 200 crore

Syska Group has inked a strategic partnership with Taiwanese component manufacturer Suyin Optronics and Singapore's Biometronic to start India’s first camera module factory at an investment of Rs 200 crore. The investment will be made in a phased manner.

China's Holitech Group today said it will set up a production facility in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of Rs 1,400 crore (USD 200 million) to supply mobile phone components like camera modules and touch panels to smartphone major Xiaomi.

Spread over 75 acre, the facility is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2019, providing employment to about 6,000 people at full-scale in the next three years.

"We will set up the plant in two phases with phase I starting in January where we will invest USD 100 million and phase II, an additional USD 100 million. The facility will cater exclusively to Xiaomi," Holitech Technology CEO Guisheng Chen told reporters here.

He added that the facility will have an annual capacity of 50 million component sets at the end of phase I and ramp it up to 100 million within three years' time.

The components that will be made at the Tirupati facility include camera modules, TFT (thin film transistor), flexible printed circuit, touch panels and fingerprint modules.

In April, Xiaomi had hosted a global meet in Delhi that saw participation from 50 of its global suppliers. The company, at that time, had said these suppliers setting up manufacturing base inIndia would bring in Rs 15,000 crore in investment and create 50,000 jobs.

"We are committed to Make in India and our intent is to get our partners to also manufacture locally here. Holitech's plant will cater to significant part of our requirement. We will continue to work on getting more partners to set up base in India," Xiaomi Vice President and IndiaManaging Director Manu Jain said.

He added that local manufacturing of components could bring down prices of mobile phones.

Holitech, which supplies to other global handset makers also, has 16 factories in China andTaiwan and employs about 30,000 people. The company expects to clock USD 4 billion in revenue this year.

"The facility in India is our first international foray. We expect to see revenue of USD 2 billion from here after phase II," Chen said.

Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh said the state presents an attractive opportunity for companies looking at setting up manufacturing base.

"Our state of the art infrastructural offerings make Andhra Pradesh an exciting investment opportunity and it is heartening to see Holitech Technology come to the state and initiate a big revolution in the market for local manufacturing," he added.

iPhones to start in India, a shift from China
2 min read . 15 Apr 2019Bloomberg

  • India has become the fastest-growing smartphone market in the world
  • Producing phones locally would also help Apple’s retail push in India

iPhoneApple

It’s not yet clear how Apple’s steps into India will affect its China operations. China has been the company’s most important manufacturing base for years, home to Foxconn’s biggest facilities and hundreds of other partners.

Foxconn already has two assembly sites in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where it makes devices for Xiaomi and Nokia. Locating more production in India would help diversify Apple and Foxconn’s manufacturing footprint away from China amid ongoing trade tensions with the U.S.

The Indian assembly line of Foxconn’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. would serve local and export markets by the time Apple announces its next iPhone models in September, people familiar with the matter have said. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer, the biggest maker of iPhones, will initially invest about $300 million to set up for Apple with investments to ramp up as capacity expands, they said.

Gou said that his company is talking with the government about investment terms. He has a dozen software people in India and he plans to increase that to 600, he said.

“We are the primary assembler after all," Gou said on Monday. “If our customer wants to boost its scale, it will need to depend on us to grow the comprehensive supply chain."

Producing phones locally would also help Apple’s retail push in India. The company needs to meet a 30% local sourcing rule to be able to open its own stores in the country.

Indians bought more than 140 million smartphones last year, with just 1.7 million sold by Apple, as consumers favored cheaper models from China. On Xiaomi’s Indian website, the Redmi Note 7 has a price of ₹9,999 ($143), which is about a 10th the price of Apple’s iPhone Xs in the country.

Japan in race to make India aviation hub

Japan’s aviation investment intentions in India centre around an amphibious aircraft US-2 produced by ShinMaywa company. Its appeal lies in its pitch for bagging the order — complete manufacturing of the aircraft in India, training of Indian aviation engineers and shifting of some of the company’s production for Boeing and Airbus to India.

The nub is India will have to invest close to Rs 15,000 crore in the manufacturing facility, but the Japanese have assured that exports to other countries should make up for the initial investment.

For India, the offer of US-2 goes beyond a simple military sale of equipment. Of the 15 US-2 aircraft, three will be wholly manufactured in Japan but the next five will be made in India with Indians as apprentices. The next six aircraft will be wholly made in India by Indian engineers.

It has promised to plough offsets into building navigational infrastructure in coastal stations where US-2 will be based. The proposal also assures an engine production facility in the country headed by Rolls Royce, which also supplies engines to C-17, C-130 and P-8i aircraft being used by the Indian Air Force. If all goes well, the Japanese also have plans to design and develop in India a 19-seater civilian aircraft.
