Research is underway at the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop light weight tanks for the Indian Army, said S D Dimri, Director General, Ordnance Factories, here on Wednesday.He was speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory (AHVF).

Addressing mediapersons on the upcoming developments, he said the technology to destroy anti-tank missiles had been bought from Russia and the same, to be introduced soon, would be upgraded to suit the needs of the Indian tanks. "The present tanks weigh around 45-60 tonnes. Technological superiority is increasingly going to be the decisive factor in future battles. The prediction is that future tanks would weigh less than 30 tonnes, mak- ing them light enough to fly in fleets of C-130 transports, land on dirt strips, and roll off ready to fight," Dimri said.

"The production of equipment at the Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory works out to 25 per cent and this translates to production of ` 2,600-crore worth equipment per year, whereas the total amount of equipment produced through all ordnance factories is `12,000 crore. Two more ordnance factories will come up in Nalanda (Bihar) and in Korba (Chattisgarh)," he added.
MC Bansal, Additional Director General, Indian Ordnance Factories, and MSN Rao, General Manager, AHVF, were also present.

what is its staying power in a tank infested country?

How is it different from a PT 76?

PT 76 was amphibious in addition and hence greater flexibility.

Does this tank have such capabilities?

PT-76 was a good tank and could have been use in the area, But its no longer produced, PT-76 could have been updated..

As per RFI, The gun should be able to destroy targets at 3kms which can be only done by 120 or 125mm guns..

Actually it can, it is M68A2/L52 105mm rifled gun, a modified version of M68A1/L52 used in M1 and M1IP that was modified version of M68/L52 gun used on M48A5 and M60 series, M68 was a US license version of British L7 gun... It is not a bad gun, especially with modern ammunition. However Stryker MGS have lower priority in modernisation than APC versions that will as first recive double V hull belly, reinforced suspension, new engine and stronger armor (with provision to mount ERA AFAIK).

Lets keep it to Polish-Indian Light tank aka Anders MGS ( Light tank )..

We will see how OBRUM will end with proper prototype, currently we just have allmost fully working technology demonstrator (it can drive, fire etc.)

Wheels vs. Tracks Redux

In the Army's quest to develop a new armored combat vehicle in the wake of the fiasco that was the FCS program, Army Chief Gen. George Casey has vowed to start with a "clean sheet of paper." He even went so far as to say the Army was considering a wheeled vehicle, as the basis for a future armored fleet. I asked Casey whether the Army really wanted to revisit the wheeled versus tracks debate from the early days of FCS and he assured me it was a serious option.

Currently we know that US Army GCV in basic configuration will be 40-50 tons heavy vehicle with capability to use addon armor if needed... weight can easy go up to 55 tons, or even more, so tracks are only option... not to mention that some circles behind GCV program, want's to expand it in to bigger program to develop whole family of vehicles... or even family's of vehicles.

But I doubt that Indian Army should get similiar R&D scheme. Wheeled vehicles are not bad, however if IA looks for something armed with 120mm gun or bigger, then wheeled vehicle probably will not be able to handle it... especially something lighter than 35-40 tons... but maybe? XM1202 MCS from MGV subprogram of FCS program, was belived to weight approx 20 tons, of course it was tracked but still big pile of money was spend on developing low recoil, lightweight 120mm smoothbore gun, the XM360/L48 (after standarisation it would be M360/L48), thanks god that they do not waste that effort and use XM360 as a base for lightweight but designed for MBT's, 120mm smoothbore gun that can fire all range of ammunition used by MBT's (although even XM360 could fire M829A3 for example). This new gun was designdated XM360E1/L48 (after standarisation it would become M360A1/L48), it is proposed as a replacement for M256/L44.

So everything is possible. The Anders UCP in it's light tank/fire support vehicle is using another lightweight low recoil gun, the RUAG CTG L50, maybe it is possible to mount it also on wheeled vehicle.

Italians were experimenting on rearming their Centauro B1 from low recoil 105mm in to low recoil 120mm.

AFAIK also Germans developed low recoil compact 120mm gun.

And there is solution from Russia, the 125mm gun used on 2S25 Sprut-SD, but I doubt that wheeled vehicle could handle that gun.

In RFI DRDO tank is also included, There will be trails after that we may see Induction..

UCP Anders is not ready yet, what we see in all photos is still early technology demonstrator, the real prototype will be shown in near future if everything goes well.

Kunal you always give preference for wheeled vehicles over tracked vehicles. Wheeled vehicles have the advantage of easy interoperability, but Tracked vehicles are always better it doesn't matter in which terrain, but their performance is better.
