Could Mexico be a pillar of the aerospace industry: Airbus

Redacción A21 / Monday, 8 May 2023 - 01:00
AIRBUS WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT THE AIR TRANSPORT SECTOR AND ALSO THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY IN THE COUNTRY: ARTURO BARREIRA
Aerospace industry FAMEX Airbus
Mexico has a very important potential to develop the aerospace industry and to be placed next to the biggest economy in the world, it still makes more showy; can take advantage of nearshoring, as well as all the aeronautical clusters that are being developed in the country, such as Chihuahua and Querétaro, for example, says Arturo Barreira, president of Airbus for Latin America and the Caribbean.

He assured that they also have very appropriate production costs for the industry, which is another incentive to continue growing and attract more foreign investment.

“Of course there are more things to be done, I believe that the government also has a job to do, it has to generate consensus and incentives so that there is more of this industry in the country”, he detailed.

I explained that those responsible for the development of Airbus in Chihuahua said that proximity to the United States is very important, but it is also part of the academy, “the talent development task is what allows us to serve all the companies that want to settle in this State”, puntualizó.

ADVERTISING

He stated that what is clear, is that the workforce decreased during COVID; in the space industry, down by 15%, but it is already recovering despite the fact that it is very difficult to attract qualified workforce.

“I imagine that this is a problem where all the clusters are found, hence the importance of encouraging that the academy is close and present around these development poles”, added the directive.

He added that Airbus currently has more employees than before the pandemic, and on the ground it is expected to hire 13,000 additional employees worldwide for this year.

In Mexico, specifically in Querétaro, he indicated, plans to expand the door factory are being maintained, now the A320, emergency doors and the doors of the bodegas are being carried out. He said that currently 4,000 puertas are manufactured annually and with the expansion it is expected to go down to the figure of 5,000, which is to say a 25% more.

“Although it is clear that it is not easy to attract talent and all these processes take longer than the companies they would like; maybe we have the advantage of having a brand like Airbus which can be more attractive. However, we are also making efforts to attract young people to this industry through holidays and, above all, explaining our mission and sustainability objectives.

“So we also attract young people interested in innovation, and I believe that young people are more aware of the environment than previous generations”, he says.

Airbus also on the space pabellón

Arturo Barreira pointed out that worldwide, the company has orders for delivery of 7,500 planes, so only for Mexico are 150 planes, not all are new, “we also have second-hand or conversions to freighters; like the two A330s that are going to be delivered to Awesome Cargo, even though their objective is to have three or four in their fleet but for now they are limited by the category 2 theme ”, he explained.

He added that the integration of the A220 family could be the best option for an airline like Aeroméxico, since it is the best plane for a single country to serve the regional market and that it can also be used for transhipment routes.

Without a doubt the A220, of this category, is the most successful aircraft on the market with more than 750 units sold, and we are looking to expand the capacity to produce up to 14 (monthly) at the plants in Alabama and Montreal”, he says.

Currently, 200 A220 planes are in service, and 550 have to be delivered; among the largest customers of this family are Delta and jetBlue who have ordered more than 100 planes each; JetBlue has specialized in A220-300 and Delta with a mix with A220-100.

“It is a plane that I believe is very well adapted for that market and, above all, it has as a characteristic that it has been built from the ground up, with which it has the most recent technology”, he mentions.

Barreira explained that it is very difficult for airlines like Viva Aerobus and Volaris to want to adopt aircraft from the A220 family, because their low-cost model already has a very defined value, so they will then use A320 and A321 aircraft.

“They are looking for the plane with the lowest unitary cost of the market, for the convenience of having configurations with larger seats, for the A321 is 240 passengers at the moment that the A220 is for 160 passengers at most”, he added.

Boeing Aircraft Parts to Be Manufactured in Mexico
In a recent tweet published this week, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrand, the French company SAFRAN will begin the construction of a new plant in Chihuahua will be manufacturing the interior of Boeing passenger aircraft. This announcement was made after Mexico, the United States of America and Canada signed a new International Treaty on July 1.

SAFRAN, the world’s third-largest aerospace provider, has been operating in Mexico for over 25 years, primarily in the aerospace markets. According to its website, this French company has two production plants in Querétaro, both SAFRAN centers of excellence: one makes critical parts for the CFM56 and SaM146 engines and the other specializes in landing gear components for Airbus and Boeing airplanes.

In addition, SAFRAN operates the largest aircraft wiring plant in the world, in Chihuahua. When it was inaugurated in 1996, the plant was the first aerospace manufacturing plant in Mexico. Today, it comprises four production units and a wiring system design and engineering center. The site designs and produces 95% of the wiring used on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and produces 75% of the wiring on the Airbus A380, the world’s biggest jetliner.

With extensive operations in the Mexican aerospace market, SAFRAN is a leading partner for the country’s airlines. The CFM56 engine developed and produced by CFM International, the 50/50 joint company between SAFRAN Aircraft Engines and General Electric (GE), powers more than 120 single-aisle commercial jets for Aeromexico and Interjet.

Since 2016, SAFRAN dedicated to composite parts for the LEAP jet engine in Mexico. The LEAP engine – the successor to the CFM56 – has already been chosen to power Aeromexico’s 90-strong fleet of Boeing 737 MAX airliners and the 40 Airbus A320neo airliners ordered by Interjet. SAFRAN also operates in the regional aviation market, as the supplier of the SaM146 engine (through PowerJet, a 50/50 joint company between Safran Aircraft Engines and UEC Saturn) and nacelles for the fleet of 30 Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jets ordered by Interjet.

SAFRAN operates three maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centers in Querétaro. These state-of-the-art facilities provide a complete range of support services for aircraft engines, landing gear and hydraulic systems.

According to Mr. Ebrand, the construction of this new plant will generate 800 jobs, which is positive after the French company laid off 3,000 workers in May due to falling demand from the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, SAFRAN is Mexico’s largest employer in the aerospace industry, with around 10,000 employees at production, maintenance and engineering.

Certification of an aircraft type in another country is normally a minor issue, albeit a prerequisite for starting operations abroad. In the case of Embraer’s 195-E2 and China, the recent decision by the Civil Aviation Administration of China to approve the type is much more significant, heralding Embraer’s strategic shift to Asia.

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, like its larger peers Airbus and Boeing, is still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and is far from production levels it once enjoyed. In addition to the issues every OEM faces, Embraer has to deal with problems specific to regional aviation and its own product portfolio. The E2 family, a fundamental update of Embraer’s first-generation large regional jets, is not selling as well as the company had hoped in its usual Western markets.

NUEVO LEON - The Monterrey-based company Frisa will invest US$200 million to increase the capacity of its plants located in the municipalities of Garcia and Santa Catarina, said Eduardo Garza T Junco, president of the company.

He indicated that these resources will be used basically to develop special steel and aerospace products, so the capacity of the forging and aerospace plants will be increased.

"We are taking advantage of the growth we are seeing in the North American region, and we are going to increase production in the aeronautical sector and develop markets for special export steels," he said in an interview at Expo Pyme 2023.

Regarding the supply to Elon Musk's company Space X, Garza T emphasized that it was a relationship that started very technically in a process that took a year and a half, but today Frisa is the main supplier of products for engines that go under the launch rocket.

"Every time there is a Space X launch, there is a product made in Santa Catarina," emphasized the executive.

When questioned about Frisa's relationship with the automotive industry, he commented that they participate indirectly by supplying the tools used by the automotive manufacturing companies.

"Frisa exports to around 60 countries, has a workforce of 3,100 employees and with the growth it expects to experience, it would be close to 4,000 jobs," said the executive.

QUERETARO, QRO - Three years after the first effects of the Covid-19 health contingency, the state's aerospace industry has recovered its pre-pandemic activity, said Verónica Méndez, president of the Querétaro Aerocluster.

The recovery of the industry is accompanied by a high demand of requirements for the companies installed in the state and that are part of the cluster.

At the moment, companies in the industry report double-digit growth, of approximately 10%, in requirements.

"We have been growing at double digits as a percentage of the requirements we were having. This is what is happening with the aerospace industry after the pandemic, we have not only reached the pre-pandemic numbers, but double-digit growth in terms of part number requirements and products offered by companies in the Aerocluster," said Méndez.

After resuming pre-pandemic figures, the local industry is working on defining its productive capacities in order to identify the opportunities generated by the relocation of suppliers (nearshoring).

Among the cluster's projects, it is working on the development of suppliers for the aerospace industry, supporting companies with the necessary information to join the supply chain as a certified supplier.

The Brazilian-made Embraer Phenom 300 has surpassed the best-selling Cessna Citation Excel as the US' most popular private jet.Embraer
  • The Embraer Phenom 300 has surpassed the Cessna Citation Excel as the US' most popular private jet.
  • According to federal data, the Phenom had about 360,000 takeoffs and landings over the past 12 months.
  • The Brazilian-made plane boasts better fuel burn, speed, and range compared to the Excel.
Textron Aviation's best-selling Cessna Citation family of private jets has reigned as America's most popular for 15 years, but it just lost its top spot.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration's August report on business jet operations, the Brazilian-made Embraer Phenom 300 has overtaken the Cessna Citation Excel series as the most-flown business plane in America.

The Phenom 300 has had over 360,300 takeoffs and landings at US airports since August 2022, while the Excel is just shy of 359,000. The difference is about 1,400 takeoffs and landings, according to the agency — making it the first time since 2009 that any private jet has flown more than the Excel in the US.

"With its best-in-class speed, range, and cabin pressurization, plus incredible fuel efficiency and the highest residual value in the industry, we continually improve upon this spectacular jet to deliver the utmost value to all our customers who fly it," CEO of Embraer Executive Jets Michael Amalfitano recently posted on LinkedIn.

CONTINUOUSLY MONITORED AIR TRAFFIC WITHIN A RADIUS OF 200 KILOMETERS
Embraer
Embraer and the Brazilian Army successfully completed the first test of the M200 Vigilante radar, including the deployment of the equipment on the KC-390 aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

It is a medium-range sensor intended for aerial surveillance and early warning applications, it uses advanced processing techniques, so it can identify and track positions, as well as classify targets.

It has an integrated power generation system, which guarantees an operating autonomy of up to 48 hours and ease of transportation by land and air platforms.

The radar operation was carried out at the Júlio Belém airport, located in Parintins, during June and July.

The location was chosen due to the Parintins Folk Festival, which increases air traffic in the region.

The M200 Vigilante radar was transported for the first time on a KC-390, on a three-hour trip between Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, and the city located in the Amazon jungle.

The sensor continuously monitored air traffic within a radius of 200 kilometers from the airport, working together with CINDACTA IV flight controllers, this is the agency of the Brazilian Air Force, responsible for monitoring flights in the northern region of the country. .

"Embraer's joint operation with the Army and the Brazilian Air Force demonstrated the versatility, agility, precision and robustness of the radar in its first operation," said Bosco da Costa Junior, president of Embraer Defense & Security.

This is the 'Sirtap', the Spanish-Colombian military drone in which Spain has invested 595 million euros
The Spanish Ministry of Defense will acquire 27 of these aircraft from Airbus, while Colombia plans to incorporate 18 and there is already interest from five other Latin American countries.

1693865069011.png

This remotely piloted aircraft, in whose development Colombia also participates, has been designed by the Airbus division in Spain, where the units will be built, based on the requirements of the country's Armed Forces. In addition, Sirtap is an important project for the national defense industry since it will also have the participation of other local companies.

With these new drones the Army plans to replace its Israeli-made Searcher systems, incorporated at the end of 2007, already at the end of their useful life. For its part, the Air Force does not have units with the characteristics of the Sirtap but rather has the Predators - larger units of American origin and intended for other types of missions - so incorporating these new systems will mean an increase in its capabilities.

Participation of Colombia in Sirtap
Colombia joined this project in 2017, two years after Spain and Airbus began to devise the development of the Sirtap. Colombian participation gained new momentum with the arrival to power of President Gustavo Petro, who has a special interest in this type of project involving the development and strengthening of his country's aerospace industry through the transfer of technical knowledge and technology.

In this regard, the Colombian analyst and researcher on defense and security issues Erich Saumeth explained to Infobae Spain that “Colombia will focus its work on the development of the tail assembly of the drone, what is commonly known as the empennage, and on the landing gear. ”, work that will be carried out by the Colombian Aeronautical Industry Corporation (CIAC), a company owned by the Colombian Ministry of Defense. According to Saumeth, who cited Airbus sources, the South American country is autonomous in the design of these two components and will be the main contribution it makes to this joint project.

Although the exact amount that Colombia will invest in this program is still unknown, it is estimated that it will be around 300 million dollars. The Colombian Armed Forces plan to incorporate six systems, that is, 18 aircraft that, added to the 27 from Spain, make a total of 45 aircraft for the initial phase of the project. Furthermore, Saumeth has assured that five other Latin American countries have already expressed their interest in the Sirtap to Airbus: "We can venture to say that among them are, without a doubt, Chile, Brazil, Peru and, probably, Argentina and Mexico."

Aircraft characteristics
The Sirtap will have a length of 7.3 meters, a height of 2.2 meters and a wingspan of 12 meters for a total weight of 750 kilos. According to its manufacturer, the drone will be able to fly for 20 hours straight at an altitude of 6,400 meters, being capable of operating under any weather conditions, between -40º and 50º, due to a projection system against ice and high temperatures. Likewise, thanks to the fact that its wings and engine can be disassembled, it is easily transportable, for example, on a C295 aircraft - also of Spanish design -, capable of transporting up to two Sirtaps at the same time.

The remotely piloted aircraft is intended for use in border surveillance and immigration control missions, search and rescue of missing persons in remote areas, monitoring illegal activities such as piracy, drug trafficking and illegal fishing, and support against fires and other natural disasters. Although the first version of the system will be equipped only with electro-optical and infrared sensors, there is the possibility that in the future it will integrate weapons to provide the Sirtap with attack capabilities.

During his participation in the IMEF Monterrey international forum, the general director of Frisa said that they now participate in the aeronautical industry, mining, wind energy, food, sugar industry and semiconductors, and even manufacture components for companies such as SpaceX and NASA.

“It is the story of a company founded here from nothing, its origin was a workshop, today we are a company that manufactures forged components. We have a global presence, we export 100 percent of what we do.”
He said that his clients include: FMC, National Oilwell Varco, Schulumberger, Vestas, Siemens-Gamesa, Caterpillar, Komatsu, GE Power, Siemens, SpaceX, Applied Materials, LAM Research, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, Boeing, GE Aviation and Safran.

Furthermore, attracted by the growth of the aerospace industry, it decided to venture into that market, managing to supply components to Elon Musk's SpaceX company, said Eduardo Garza T Junco, president of Frisa.

"Our main market is turbines, our customers are turbine owners, however, we are already selling directly to Boeing and Airbus, and we are already delivering the product to SpaceX, something a little bit helicopter and something also a little bit military," he indicated in his presentation in the closing of the Aerospace Manufacturing Congress.
