China doesn't follow Nato classification for fighter jets. Ask any reputable defence analyst and he will confirm. China's gen 3 equals Nato gen 4. FC-1/JF-17 therefor will be referred to as a 3rd gen fighter in Chinese media/reports/defence blogs and the J-20/J-31 as (chinese) gen 4 which translates into Nato's gen 5 (stealth). While going through this thread, I came at a point where it is mentioned that Chinese 4th gen fighter is actually equivalent to 5th gen. I didn't got the follow up points. Could you be more specific and simple in the explanation?
China's gen 5 (UCAV) will be Nato's gen 6, i.e. unmanned stealth fighter.
Whenever quoting from Chinese media, add +1 to get Nato's equivalent.
Trolls often misinterpret the Chinese media to classify JF-17/FC-1 as a 3rd gen fighter as per Nato's norms.
