I am not a soldier, the section composition I thought is my opinion. In any case section level snipers if they have semi-automatic rifle that will be better. Snipers need to escort army patrolling troops and should they come under fire they should be able to fire back, bolt action takes too much time. Only specialized snipers are suitable.

The whole point of a sniper is to be invisible to the enemy, not to patrol along with the regulars. He will be the first target of the enemy (identified by his scoped long rifle). Even if he is moving separately from the patrol group, he will be displacing too often to be of any advantage.

So, sniper escorts are not practical. And all non-DMR snipers are, in a way, specialized. There is no clear difference between medium or long range given their MO. And in such regions as our borders, weapon weight is a deciding criteria. The choice of action is up to the operator. If it is a sniper team, 2 or more bolt action rifles are good enough.

But your idea can be made practical by tweaking it. 3 or 4 independent sniper teams can be deployed on stationary nests along critical sections of the patrol route. But they will have to be at the company level at the least; and independent of the regular infantry. Also, IA would need to train many more snipers and develop specialized tactics before such manpower / skills become available to us.

No matter how many RFIs are released and how many evaluations are done, we will still lack in this game. For gods sake, at least for once we must expedite this.

On one side we are losing lives because of Pakistani snipers and here we are releasing RFIs upon RFIs. No assault rifles, no body armours, no protective helmets. Even no standardised camouflage.

Some SWAT teams of our states look better than the same portion of the army. Decades upon decades our soldiers are being pushed in to fire. Only God knows what's going on with the babus and top brass.

The 'Indi'genization is down to the core.

Dragnov is a DMR. Why is a DMR being replaced with a sniper rifle? Or is it that our "Snipers" have been using DMRs.

The IA sniper doctrine (training, employment, tactics) is incredibly muddled.

I knew that. That's why I said IA needs M110 sniper rifle from US.

@kr9 not so. Even if the sniper is targeted another soldier can pick up the rifle and shoot back. IA doctrine should be centered like this GPMG for suppressive fire, sniper to engage from a distance with accuracy and full automatic assault rifles as support. Plus Carl Gustav to blow up.

You just Described a Designated Marksman not a sniper.

Sniper does not work with a squad. A sniper Team can play multiple roles - Scout, Recon, Intelligence gathering, Overwatch for an operation, HVT targeting, etc - His role is completely strategic

a DMR provides support to his squad/platoon in a tactical engagement - As a support he is another tool alongside a GMPG or a CG Unit. Its a tactical distribution of firepower. nothing more.

IMO IA doctrine has to build Sniper teams at a Regimental / Corp level. and deployed strategicly at the discretion of the theater commander.

Some important points from RFI :

The RFI has some broad technical parameters like the rifle should be a bolt-action rifle with a calibre of 8.6mm (.338 Lapua Magnum is the industry standard in this calibre), the accuracy should be 1 MOA or better with an effective range of 1200m or more, The service of rifle is also expected to be 15 years or more.
The rifle should also have MIL-1913 rails and inbuilt safety. It should also be provided with an variable power telescopic sight with illuminated cross hair reticule and range estimation no less than 1300m. The rifle should also have iron sights for backup
Because of the size of the contract and time for delivering the rifles being 18 months from signing of contract, only large manufacturers would be able to achieve the delivery on time. So small's arm manufactures like Accuracy International, Barreta-SAKO, Steyr, Brügger & Thomet, SIG Sauer, Rangemaster, Truvelo, Barrett, Remington and others would be able to participate, smaller and new manufacturers like Haenel, Desert Tactical, McMillan, Armalite, Ritter and Stark, Steel Core Designs etc would probably not be able to compete.

Well many .338 are offering sub MOA out to 1000-1500m. Heck, FN SSR is claiming sub MOA out to 1000m and that is a semi automatic DMR.

OFB as usual is half a century behind the curve.
OFB only made what they have been asked to. Just like old time, the need changed and their design is now butter flying out of window.

In the Indian Army Snipers are strategically used only by the PARA SF.In RR or other Infantry units they are not used as effectively as they could.I have never seen a Sniper working with a buddy. Most operate with the QRT.

Most likely this tender will also be scraped and we will end up buying a sniper rifles in no.s only a quarter of what is needed from Israel or somewhere else.

I may be wrong but I can't think of anything positive about this whole request, trial and reject system.

We need both LSRs and DMRs. To equip at section level, we need DMRs that are versatile and reliable.

The 'Indi'genization is down to the core.

Yup DMR. Designated Marksman Rifle. I do think each Indian squad should have DMR, for this purpose semi-auto is best. For specialized sniper M 82 Barrett is suitable. Since average IA soldier does not have access to ACOG or Red Dot Sight so it is necessary. Plus having DMRs in every section will allow to engage from a long distance.

During Mumbai attacks, NSG seen fielding two different kind of sharpshooting rifles, One was based on 5.56mm SIG and other is 7.62nato, Interestingly their roles are different for one another under different circumstances ..
