As we all know ...

With out gun culture in the country, difficult to develop new gun tech.

If there was gun culture, demand would have taken care of gun tech advancement.
You don't need gun culture we need is good company or govt organization with R&D.who is comitted to make country better

But companies will not invest in R&D unless they are confident in the returns.

In general, armies across the world do not change their weapons frequently. In the mean time it is the private consumption that keeps funding of the R&D going .

OFB Ishapore is Producing this riffle under license since 1963 ..................they just changed it's external Looks which is made of wood & some more modifications......................

Not this. I was talking about the 7.62 version displayed by OFB recently.

The range on this is 600 m, if I am not wrong. Hardly a sniper rifle material.

Lots of work, yet to be put in.

Actually lot of sniping takes place in between 500 to 1000 mtr range. Extreme sniping at 1000 mtr + are very rare. In Indian context where most of Sniping would take place either in the pine covered range or the extreme height of Himalayan range even 600 mtr is good enough. This rifle too was just unveiled after receiving query from IA and ofcourse it would need work to finish off.
But anyway I am not complaining as .338 is a much more potent round then 7.62.

Well many .338 are offering sub MOA out to 1000-1500m. Heck, FN SSR is claiming sub MOA out to 1000m and that is a semi automatic DMR.

OFB as usual is half a century behind the curve.

Army issued RFI for .338 not for .308 or 7.62X51mm...............
Yup but it is hard to find a semi-automatic sniper rifle of that caliber. If Army now moves to 7.62x51mm for assault rifle then it would be logistically easy. Another thing is there is little difference between 8.58 and 7.62 as there is little difference between 6.8mm and 7.62mm. SVD Dragunov was automatic, replacing as semi-automatic rifle by a bolt action is not good. Bolt-action should be left to special snipers, but for common army snipers, semi-automatic is best.

FYI: in US, Lapua costs $4-5 per round. A decent .50 BMG round can be purchased for as low as 99 cents. There's huge cost advantage for adopting .50 cal round. Both rounds can be used in sniping as done by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lapua is smaller and so more can be carried but it's not that much smaller. Also, 0.50 can be used against soft targets in addition to enemy soldiers. Fewer companies make Lapua rounds while .50 is easier to manufacture. Both have very identical long range stopping power but .50 cal has more recoil and rifles are heavier.

There is no semi-automatic .338 in market....338 rifle is used for long range sniping..and for accuracy at long range bolt action suits better...There is no news about replacing SVD's with .338...Probably SVD will be replaced with another Designated marksmen Rifle.

Two things 7.62X51mm is DMR and .338,.50 BMG is for long range sniping

Long range sniping, bolt action .50 cal M82 Barrett should be choice and for close and medium range sniping semi-automatic is best.

Beyond 1000 meter we need .50 Cal Barrett M 82 and within 1000 meter, M110. One sniper must accompany a section. In section level sniper M110 is best. My section of 10 includes 7 Kalantak, 1 M110, 1 Pecheneg, 1 Carl Gustav.

That is the myth..we can take out targets beyond 1000 meters with .338 .408 and .416..
On second hand our terrain are different and difficult so .50 cal would be weight problem

Yes..one Designated marksman is enough for a section of soldiers..but you need sniper specialists with larger caliber

My section of 10 includes 7 Kalantak, 1 M110, 1 Pecheneg, 1 Carl Gustav.
Are you a serving soldier....?
