I have/had travelled a lot both in south and North India by train. The conclusion is stations in south are lot cleaner than North.

New Rust-free S-Steel benches designed & manufatured by Indian Railways. The pictures are from Narasapuram (W.Godavari) - installed as part of MPLADs fund utilisation of Nirmala Sitharaman.

On the Chandigarh shatabdi express in the Executive class train they have installed TV screens on each seat.

One news channel is broadcast live while they have a video feed of some Hollywood and bollywood movies plus some limited Music Videos. The only drawback is that the headphones have gone missing you have to use your own.

Good to know. World class railways, roadways, cleaniness and slum rehabilitation and suddenly we look a completely different country. It is very much achievable given some time, only reason hasn't happened till now is lack of political will.

Sorry to sound snobbish but I will stick to using my own headphones rather than publically used ones.

Indian Railways just took a historic step

The Indian Central Railways is making history as the last bastion of the 1,500V Direct Current (DC) electrified lines in Mumbai has been carefully replaced with comparatively newer standards of the 25,000 volt Alternate Current (AC) traction followed across India.

With this conversion from 1500 volt DC to 25,000 volt AC traction between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus(CST) and Thane on Monday, the only remaining lines in India which still run on DC traction are between CST and Panvel and the Thane-Vashi trans-harbour lines.

IRCTC to offer air tickets against waitlisted railway tickets

In some good news, IRCTC is offering passengers who fail to get their waitlisted ticket confirmed an option to convert it into an airline ticket at a competitive fare. The Railway PSU has already tied-up with budget carrier GoAir and have sold about 100 tickets through this scheme in the past one month.
Passengers booking train tickets right from sleeper class to AC classes can avail the facility, Dutta said.

"For such passengers, the airline ticket would be competitively priced and cheaper by as much as 30-40 per cent," he said.

The airlines would be placing their unsold tickets with IRCTC, a move that not only promises a boon for the domestic carriers but an added option for the passengers in reaching their destination without having to abort their trip.

With an average seat factor of about 70 to 75 per cent, most of the domestic airlines fly with about 20 per cent seats empty in their plane and IRCTC plans to make the best use of it.

"We have also entered into an understanding with SpiceJet under the scheme and plan to rope in other domestic carriers too," said IRCTC spokesperson Sandip Dutta.

However, the scheme applies to tickets booked at least three days prior to the date of the journey. The flight tickets would be made available only for the day of the train journey or a day after that. IRCTC would be sending e-mails to waitlisted passengers who seek to avail the benefit under the scheme.

Central Railway starts ICU-on-Rails Service for Accident Victims

The rail ambulance launched in Mumbai will have all the ICU facilities and will take 7-8 patients at a time to nearby hospitals.

As soon as an accident occurs, the van with medical facilities will rush to the site and shift people to the tertiary care hospital through the railway tracks.

Toy train service resumes in Darjeeling after five years

DARJEELING: After a gap of nearly five years, the toy train service has resumed in West Bengal's Darjeeling.

The toy train 'Queen of Hills' shuttled yesterday between Darjeeling and New Jalpaiguri stations.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of 88.48 km of narrow gauge track that connects New Jalpaiguri with Darjeeling, passing through Ghum at an altitude of 2258 meters.

The toy train service was suspended on September 2010, after a landslide destroyed about 600 meters of road and tracks running parallel to it at the Tindharia town of Darjeeling.

NEW DELHI: Global giants such as Bombardier, Hyundai-ROTEM, TALGO and CAF have queued up to manufacture semi high-speed train sets in India, which will be used for faster inter-city travel. "Four multinationals have evinced interest to manufacture modern train sets in India. The successful bidder will first import two train sets and then rest would be manufactured in the country," a senior railway board official told ET. Introduction of the muchawaited train sets was announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his Rail Budget 2015-16. The cost of the project is pegged at around Rs 2,500 crore for 15 train sets. If successful, more such train sets would be ordered. Train sets are identical to Bullet trains where coaches are self-propelled and not pulled by locomotive. As a result, power is equally distributed across the system bringing down travel time substantially. However, unlike Bullet trains, these will not require dedicated tracks. These swanky trains will ply on all Rajdhani and Shatabdi routes. As per the Request for Proposal for the project, while 275 coaches will be manufactured in India, 40 would be imported. The Request for Qualification (RFQ) was floated in May for the global manufacturers to participate in the bidding process. Bids will be opened in August for shortlisting the qualified bidders. The RFQ will be followed by financial bids and the successful bidder will be awarded the contract by December.

Rail minister Suresh Prabhu launches India's first air-conditioned DEMU train in Kochi

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today flagged off India's first diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train service with an air-conditioned coach here.

The Angamaly-Ernakulam-Tripunithura-Piravom train service is expected to help in reducing traffic congestion in the state's fastest growing city.

"It is for the first time in a DEMU service, we have provided air conditioned service. We want to increase it further," Prabhu said at a function in Ernakulam Junction.

Top Railway officials said the AC coach provides reclining type comfortable cushion seats for 73 passengers similar to air-conditioned chair car of inter-city express trains.

Wonder why the name of the stations in the coach are only in Tamil. Do they expect only locals to travel in the metro.

Minister of Railways Inaugurates Newly Constructed Gandhidham-Tuna Tekra Rail Line

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu today (i.e. on 14/07/2015) inaugurated the newly constructed broad-gauge railway-line between Gandhidham and Tuna-Tekra Port in Gujarat by flagging off a goods train. Gandhidham is a town in Kutch district of Gujarat while Tuna-Tekra Port is a port 20 k.m. west of Kandla in Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat.

The inauguration was done from Delhi through remote control by setting-up a video-conferencing between Rail Bhawan, New Delhi and Gandhidham Railway Station.

The project has been complete under the private line/Non-Government Railway (NGR) Model of Participative Model Policy of 2012 of Ministry of Railways for undertaking rail connectivity and capacity augmentation projects. It is yet another significant initiative under PPP.

This railway-line is the first Non-Government Railway Project of Indian Railways under the NGR policy of 2012. This project has been funded by M/s Kandla Port Trust (KPT). It is the Western Railway Zone of Indian Railways which has coordinated and pioneered this important infrastructure project.

This approx. 17 kms. long ambitious project was approved by Railway Board in October 2013. Construction work commenced in May, 2014 and was completed in record time in May, 2015. Cost of this project is approx. Rs.185 crore. Major traffic from the port is coal and fertilizer with an expected commodity traffic of average 4 rakes daily. Indian Railways will get approximate revenue of Rs.5.00 crore from the line by moving this traffic. This line has been constructed for M/s Kandla Port Trust to bring about better and faster rail connectivity to Port of Tuna & Tekra.

Why so much preference to international chains which provide unhealthy food!!

They should open up this choice to local restaurants at the train station.
There is one thing I like about Lalu Prasad, that is, at least he tried to use products made by local craftsmen.
