Ya'll Nibbiars The Pune Division, Successfully completed CRS inspection for 7.57 K.M. track doubling from Jarandeshwar to Satara, achieving max speed of 132 kmph during trials. This commissioning will boost speed, efficiency, and punctuality of trains on the Pune Kolhapur route.

Not strictly about railways, more about security and violence on trains. Sickening incident, that's all India needs apart from so many other problems. Stupid, drunken passengers attacking and killing ticket officers.

1. Close unwanted Exits in Railway Station and Put Turnstiles to filter out Ticketless free loaders.
2. Remove Waiting List from Trains. All unga bunga business in Train is due to this Waiting list ticket which ensures that they have birth right to board.
3. Put a ticket checker at Coach gate to check the whether the person have valid ticket or not.
4. Use proper ticketing in UR coaches. UR means we can issue 200 tickets for a capacity of 108 CC car. Let it be FCFS.
5. Above 1-4 points cannot be trusted on Railway babus. On the other we need to open up Rail sector to Tour/Travel operators who can manage the resources they own. IR should just manage underlying Infra and get money.
6. Point 5 needs PMO and RailMin to introduce Pradhan Mantri Rail Gulag Yojana for Rail Babus since they will try to sabotage.

More on railways,

Eastern DFC is running at 65 percent of planned capacity without any section in West Bengal having been built yet and without any ports. That should tell you something. The demand projection for things like coal, steel, cement was off especially for the gangetic plains.

And this planning kerfuffle happened in Modi 1. Just look at the electricity demand projection numbers from 2016.

Solution is actually a massive track expansion in northern and central India supported by the Union budget because railways doesn't have the money to invest.

Power ministry based on 2016-17 number for peak demand of 162GW projected that India would have a peak demand of 224GW in 2022-23. Guess what was the peak electricity demand in india last year? It was 243 GW. All this demand was met by more coal usage for which track capacity had not been planned. Even for this year the electricity demand projection was 5.2 percent but the growth in electricity demand was 7 percent. Track capacity addition is always a good thing. But I guess the Indian government has to overbuild the track capacity given how off the demand projections have been. Better to build extra tracks than try to choose between overcrowded undignified passenger train travel and rolling blackout.

Passengers are down because they have cut down passenger train capacity, not because demand is down. Why do you think demand will be down 20% vs pre pandemic levels when the economy is around 10% bigger?

And the visuals we see of the crowded trains validate that this is not just a case of declining demand, but it is also one of unmet demand.
(For 2013-24, I think it's close to flat vs 2018-19 ex suburban passengers).

By 2022-23, freight volumes were up nearly 20% vs 2018-19. That's only possible if you cut down on passenger capacity.
Twitter threads for the interested,

@Haldilal this is why you have encroachers in the reserved coaches of those eastbound trains.

Remember that time when we discussed how the IR underestimated the need of higher capex? Now it is just a giant clusterfuck of sort...

In a way this is eerily reminiscent of the NPA mess of NDA 1; they are paying the prices for the wrongdoings of their predecessors (in this case, the Lalus and tha Mamatas). Worse, they have no freaking clue how to take it up (because their demand projections are borderline garbage tier) and the Minister keeps downplaying the crisis in public.

Passenger trains in Eastern Railways at the moment are running in 'bhagwan bharose' mode.

Most trains are running late. Worse, the announcements are way off and there is no 'live tracking' per se.

--edited out-- TMI

Demand for coal from thermal power plants has hit the roof and there is a mad rush to ensure they are adequately stocked to meet peak demand.

Railways at the moment is prioritizing freight over passenger traffic and since there are two, max three lines in that section.. its just not enough to meet demand of both freight and passenger traffic as most of the coal is mined from states in East India.

So it doesn't matter if you are traveling in a super fast train like Geetanjali or Coromandal express, make way for that 'maal gaadi'. It is likely to stay this way till June/July or longer.

Is it like this every day?

I guess not.

Did something happen that resulted in this unusual overcrowding?

It is election time so its natural for people to amplify such issues for reasons best known ... and the timing is interesting because Rahul Gandhi said 'Modi is going to privatize railways... so Modi must be removed..'

I remember narrating an incident where I was supposed to take a train from Tata to Rourkela and a connecting train to Bangalore. The train originating from Tata got cancelled and everybody was forced to get into Geetanjali that arrived two hours later. I traveled standing from Tata to Rourkela and there were moments when there was not enough space to stand on two feet. Wouldn't be surprised if there were over 200 people in reserved bogies too. It was that crowded. No TT showed up during the entire trip.

What railways can do is run high speed local trains for short distances during peak summer. That region has very poor road connectivity too. We couldn't take a taxi either coz no taxi driver was willing to drive through the naxal infested Saranda region in the evening.

App needs some work because there's noway to get rid of the popup once you click on a train. Not sure how accurate the data is but it shows 80% trains running on time.

If folks come across a live rail freight traffic map, please do share.
