Is 500 km range low for this type of submarine launched subsonic cruise missile?
I remember comparable missile like the Tomahawk having more than 2000km range. Is is VLS fired or torpedo tube fired?

Torpedo tube launched would be low I guess( a shot in dark) booster needed to travel upwards till surface of water and then breaking surface of water to push missile to some height till turbo fan ignites shall be big part of missile. So designers will need to compromise on fuel and warhead esp given if this is based on existing Nirbhay/ITCM dimensions. Also one imp factor would be flight profile. If its sea skimming then range would be affected.

Even Russian Kalibr(AShp) when launched from Submarine or ship has max range of 660 km.

It is fired from torpedo tubes. Los Angeles class, Seawolf class and Astute class fire them from their tubes.

US and French having tropedo tube launched cruise missile with range excess of 1500km and 1000km respectively
All subsonic long range missiles choose low, terrain hugging path to reach its target, if you consider high altitude, range of missile is greater than 2500km+
Russia/USSR also developed SLCM [tube launched] range excess of 2000km+
and the missile you mentioned is AShCM with range of 600km, its land attack version having longer ranges
But the important point is, these missile weights around1500kg or more, [50%+ fuel], 1500kg Nirbhay SLCM can easily cross 1200km, with a max range about 1500km+

we made deal in 2005 of 6 kalveri (scorpion) class submarine in 3.7 billion dollars. that cost near 600 million dollar diesel submarine....now MDL is going to ask 3.5 billion dollars for 3 additional kalveri class, with addition of DRDO AIP. that make it per submarine 1.2 billion dollar for a 1600 ton displacement diesel submarine. meanwhile japan is building 3000 ton taigei class submarine in approx 500-600 million dollars. which is far superior than scorpion class submarine. japan is consider very costly (by manpower salary nd life expenses ) r making Diesel submarine at half of cost than us...we r hugely milked by france (also other "so called" friendly countries) nd our own private companies. we r going to buy 6 diesel submarine in project p75i in 6.6 billion + dollars also..

except MDL is going to ask 3.5 billion dollar for 3 scorpion class speculation. other thing (mainly price) is genuine concern. no i m not saying its bjp government curruption, but france nd MDL is costing high price. do u not see its problematic?? do u justify 1.2 billion (speculation price) cost of 1600 ton scorpion class submarine?

yeah i know inflation...but it will not double price a weapon in 18 years (we sign deal with france in 2005), i mean 600 million each submarine cost to reach 1.2 billion dollar?? japan is making bigger (3000 ton taigei vs 1600 ton scorpion submarine) nd more modern diesel submarine in 600 million dollars approx (since 2018). nd u know japan is famous for making high cost weapons not low cost.
