Two other bids involving more than 1,000 units of 6X6 and 8X8 multi-axle trucks from the Army is slated to open shortly. Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland will compete with Tatra and Russian company Ural for these contracts.

"I estimate at least 8000-10,000 vehicles would need to be replaced and another 8000-10,000 new vehicles will be required,” said Vernon Norohna, VP, defence and government business, Tata Motors.

Such orders from defence forces for supply and maintenance of trucks costing R75 lakh-R1 crore each will translate into a R20,000-crore opportunity for truck makers.

“The good thing about the controversy is it has opened up an opportunity for Indian companies,” said Nithin Seth, executive director, Ashok Leyland.

Traditionally, different specialty vehicles came with different equipment bought from various countries.

For instance, Swedish Bofors guns came in with Scania trucks while Russian BM 21 Grad rocket system it came with KamAZ trucks.

So, the army ended up with a huge fleet of foreign trucks.

It does not look like a commercial truck.

I think the truck has a heavy platform on which gun sits, and the platform lowers giant spades into soft ground before gun fires. So the stability is provided by spades.

There is also a hydraulic 'press' at the back to raise the platform. This way there is no recoil pressure on the suspension.

The news above is indicative of how good the new TATA HMVs are, the stranglehold of TATRA is being broken slowly.

It makes perfect sense to leverage civilian industry for making military goods. I do not like specialized military truck makers like tatra and KAMAZ as they cannot ramp up in wartime. Tata can make thousands of units in a pinch if needed.

Major truck makers like tata, ashok Leyland, amw, eicher motors etc should be encouraged to make all kind of military vehicles.

The Truck platform was tested in the early 2000s during the BHIM era as a truck mounted gun called the T5-52 Condor.It used a Tatra 813 6x6 platform at that time, the TATA platform has far more load and recoil absorption capability.The Gun is designed to be able to absorb a lot of it's own recoil without harming the truck and without degradation of artillery parameters.

TATRA will remain in the Indian market for te very top end requirements that no Indian manufactuerer is able to meet as of today (ie 10x10 and 12x12). In 5 years I expect TATA and others in India to be up to the task but not today and so the IA has no choice but to go for TATRA. 100 TATRAs were ordered last year by the IA and another 250 will be ordered this year.

That said, the likes of `TATA and AL will bag every deal below the most specialist vehciles now.

Would like to share as this seems to be right, Here one has to cannibalized to make other one operational, Even the one is operational is mostly kept as hanger queen as maintaining them is expensive and risky ..

This is common in all arms of Army, It is a good step by Gov to replace these aging non functioning vehicles ..

Well these TATA and leyland trucks become obsolete after 4 or 5 years service but the 1980s model soviet rrucks in army had been running in good condition ,insiders says aart from the defects caused by manhanding not even a sign of rust had been in those trucks.

good old Kraz most of these will be repalced by the new Ashok Leyland FATs!

These different vehicles makes parts and maintenance difficult....

1239 +619 Units of TATA 6X6 CGT(Common Gun Tower) on order.
450 Units of Ashok Leyland FAT (Field Artillery Tractor)on order.

The Leyland Units are stated to Replace the Scania FAT's with the FH-77
The Tata units will be used for the D-30 & M-46 guns in the Beginning & for Dhanush later on!
