One chopper lost to friendly fire, a Mig21 shot down, pilot captured/paraded and a package of 24 PAF jets were allowed to go back with only one questionable F16 kill.

In American manuals it is claimed that the 50cal should be used only against armour, aircraft and defensive positions .. ofcourse nobody who uses the m2 takes this seriously.
Mounting 50cals on every vehicle for counter insurgency maybe counter productive as troops would hesitate to use it in built up areas .
There was an amusing news segment many years ago where crpf was very proud that they knocked down a hideout using a HMG as opposed to using explosives (limiting property damage).

That is a myth

The line about not using it against personnel was specifically for the 50 cal spotting rifle attached to their 106mm recoilless rifle (which was interestingly 105mm, but named 106 to prevent mixing of ammunition with other similar 105mm).

Since then, many variations of "cant use it except against x/y/z tagrets" has been common myth even amongst american troops, but its wrong.

Why is IA reluctant to install 50 cal instead similar to the American humvees?

My main guess is, since IA doesnt seem to have a standard 50 cal gun or even a standard 50 cal caliber, nor does it doctrinally allocate these guns, they prefer to just stick existing weapons from the company onto the turret.

Not enough guns. A large part of the current crop of mobile and stationary 12.7 mm guns are extracted from retired tanks for reuse. Such is the state of the great Indian arms acquisition.

barrets are .50 NATO
tank mgs are .50 soviet, and they are NSV (bad accuracy)
and I think small number of M2HB are also present
SO it is full hodge podge of two cartridges and many gun types that do basically the same thing

Issue was not the skirmish. One MiG-21 loss and one PoW is understandable .
Main issue was no retaliatory strike later.
