Do you seriously expect 100% TOT on the Ditigal terrain system, latest EW suite, HMD, Fire control radar, modular Mission computer among others ? Do you think we will get all these (even this being a small list of the subsystems)?
LM only produce the airframe ,rest all systems they buy and just assambled .....

So really we will get TOT only for an outdated 70s airframe. That's my point. It really isn't worth it.

Sadly this underestimating mindset only screwed us royally..Lets become the global workshop , maintenance garage, When we should be pushing ourselves for the global production and exporter we are just happy settling for doing the MRO jobs

The same situation with the IT industry to lets become the world workshop for back office and finally settled happily for Call centre jobs and not invested in too much technology is today backfiring with the US new laws hurting our IT industry because of sitting on the laurels ..

What china did we wont be able to do for main reasons china never worried about patents and intellectual property rights and it started doing reverse engineering of each and every shit which was given to its manufacturing base ..Remember how the chinese Mobile market evolved from making iphone clones and selling it for cheap than slowly creating their own cheap smart phone industry and today trying to compete with Apple and samsung on the affordability VFM space ...

With F-16 america will show one big carrot which we will never be able to taste as it will be hanging far away from our mouth ...Its time we do waste what ever money we want to on the Indigenous industry and make some progress rather simply trying to get technology from somewhere expecting it will create an industrial revolution in india ..

I agree here. If we have 100% knowledge of F-16, it can validate our advancements for MK2.

We will also be the global workshop for F-16. We can force U.S. to pass on the maintenance contracts for F-16 world wide to India. It will boost Indian aeronautics /aerospace sector. We will have groups of industries supporting each other. It reminds me of how Chinese advanced in smartphone manufacturing. All part made by workshops located in same area.

Our young engineers will get jobs and experience. Next generation will have new career options. This is a pre-requisite of further research and development. Who knows if these engineers develop something innovative.

Saab's Gripen E makes flight debut

Saab's first prototype Gripen E fighter has completed its debut flight from the company's Linköping site in Sweden.

Performed by test pilot Marcus Wandt on 15 June, the milestone sortie with aircraft 39-8 lasted 40min, says the manufacturer.

"During the flight, the aircraft carried out a number of actions to demonstrate various test criteria, including the retracting and extending of the landing gear," Saab says.

"The flight was just as expected, with the aircraft performance matching the experience in our simulations," says Wandt. "Its acceleration is impressive, with smooth handling."

Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab's aeronautics business area, notes that the first flight of the prototype was conducted "with the fully qualified software".

The company opted to place the fighter's new avionics system through this process, delaying the first-flight event from an original objective of late last year.

"This is about giving our customers a smart fighter system with the future designed in from the start," says Hjelm.

"Flight-test activities will continue to build on this achievement, with the programme on track to achieve the 2019 delivery schedule to our Swedish and Brazilian customers.

“The nations have so far ordered respective totals of 60 and 28 new Gripens, with the Brazilian air force also to field the type in a two-seat F-model configuration.

In announcing their agreement at the Paris Airshow, Lockheed and Tata said moving the production base to India would still retain jobs in the US.

Lockheed Martin signed an agreement with India's Tata Advanced Systems on Monday to produce F-16 fighter planes in India, pressing ahead with a plan to shift its Fort Worth, Texas plant to win billions of dollars worth of order from the Indian military.

India's air force needs hundreds of aircraft to replace its Soviet-era fleet, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has said foreign suppliers would have to make the planes in India with a local partner to help build a domestic industrial base and cut outright imports.

But Mr. Modi's Make-in-India drive runs the risk of conflicting with U.S. President Donald Trump's America First campaign under which he has been pressing for companies to invest in the United States and create jobs instead of setting up factories abroad.

In announcing their agreement at the Paris Airshow, Lockheed and Tata said moving the production base to India would still retain jobs in the United States.

“F-16 production in India supports thousands of Lockheed Martin and F-16 supplier jobs in the U.S., creates new manufacturing jobs in India, and positions Indian industry at the center of the most extensive fighter aircraft supply ecosystem in the world,” a joint statement by the firms said.

Sweden's Saab is the other contender to supply the Indian Air Force, offering to make its Gripen fighter in India. It has not yet announced a local partner for the plane which it has pitched as a modern alternative to the F-16s.

The announcement comes days before Mr. Modi travels to Washington for a first meeting with Mr. Trump, scheduled for June. 26. India and the United States have built a close defence relationship in recent years with Washington emerging as among the top three arms suppliers to India, along with Russia and Israel.

India will also have the chance to export the F-16 that is flown by air forces around the world, the joint statement said. Some 3,200 of these planes are being flown by 26 countries and the model that is being offered to India will be Block 70, the most modern of all the F-16s.

“This unprecedented F-16 production partnership between the worlds largest defense contractor and Indias premier industrial house provides India the opportunity to produce, operate and export F-16 Block 70 aircraft, the newest and most advanced version of the worlds most successful, combat-proven multi-role fighter,” the statement said.

Tata is already building airframe components for the C-130 military transport aircraft.

India has not opened formal bidding for the jet order, which is expected to be anything from 100 planes to 250.

Excellent! The F-16 Block 70/72 are way ahead of the competition, except they don't have stealth. But then stealth is becoming passe what with modern radars like those on the S-500 that are so capable that many U.S. defense officials worry that even stealth warplanes like the F-22, F-35 and the B-2 will have problems overcoming them. And stealth tech almost doubles the unit cost of an aircraft.

Exports, overhauls, and repairs will bring in huge foreign exchange as there are more than 4500 of these birds in air forces around the world.

But the Pakis will be wringing their hands in despair at this news!

But we should not buy more than 150 of them or we will see the end to tejas mk2.

Its an excellent jet,no doubt but our indigenous programs must be our priority no1.

I doubt we will induct more than a couple of squadrons. These aircraft I presume would be mainly for export.
Then whats the point of buying them, why stress our supply line and setup different infra for this when we are not gonna be buying more than 5 of these things

Make in India is the buzzword! Manufacture and export of these planes is gonna fetch us lots of dollars as well as create thousands of jobs. In addition, third line repairs and overhaul of these jets from around the world will get us plenty more in the kitty. :)

If private industry wants to learn screw driver technology, why not apply that in Tejas?
There is no lack of good deeds of the current government, but this "Make in India" is making a "C" out of Indians. Apologies for the term, but there is no better way to put it.
