I agree 100% unless they order 36 or 72 more birds rafale won't be able to turn the tide.

But if we could field 72 rafale + 120 sukhoi against china in Northeast theatre that is some serious airpower.
Anything less than 4 - 5 Sqn of Rafale won't be enough for Chinese with their layered Air Defense (including S 400 and HQ 9)

Since when those 36 Rafale jets were supposed to defeat the entire PLAAF ? You have more than 200 frontline Su-30 MKI for this task already. If 36 is the final number, then IAF is thinking of a specialized role for them. But my intuition tells me that the IAF is hell bent on getting more Rafales, not about getting Gripens or F-16s.

Saab is offering much better deal with Full ToT and future contribution in indigenous programs . So Gripen is overall a better option for Multi Role jet with several customers in line.

So no more Rafale.

Plans for defending skies of a country just don't work like that :) You can expect the main assets of IAF being fairly distributed to match various threats from Pakistan, China and even a third player like Burma .

When you look at numbers, PLAAF is rising faster than IAF and it is worrying ( at least for a maybe uninformed outsider like me ) . 36 Rafale from 2019 to 2022 not enough ! Whatever you add must come fast now. If you want a few dozens more Rafale jets being delivered starting from 2020 with a fair share of Indian made components, that should be possible at a very reasonable cost given all infrastructure, training and customization costs are already covered by the current deal.

Talking about costs, 100 Gripen won't come cheap either. From Bloomberg :

"The current single engine program could see about 100-plus made in India," said Rahul Bedi, a Delhi-based analyst with Jane’s Information Services. "This program alone could be worth $15 billion, considering 36 Gripen cost $4.5 billion to be made in Brazil. The 57 naval planes program will be another project and this could cost close to $10 billion."

Stop quoting from this so-called defense analysts..no one knows what IAF is going to buy...and what's in the mind of parrikar.

Sending the Rafale against the s-400 is folly, the best chance of killing the S-400's radar nodes are lo-lo-lo launches of MKI Brahmos with unlocked ranges of 600km or even Shaurya missile attacks. Why would you waste the Rafale for such a task, the risk is far too great, none of its weapons can penetrate the shield.

Heck forget about Parrikar, even the IN and IAF don't know what they want. In the end they might be happy with a 100000 DJI drones with MII. Atleast such a large drone order from the Chinese would prevent them from continuing to arm Pak.

The servicebility of Su 30mki now is close to 70% and Rafale will to have a servicebility close to 80 according to the deal.

Sending planes inside such a air defences will be suicide, the DRDO & IAF should work together on high speed and stealth standoff weapons with AI to dilute the defences. Also we need more high power jammer, convert a few jaguar or MKI in specialized electronic warfare

Only on paper but IAF planner understand the need and jammer specifications are being made. So in the next 5 year we might have such system and hopefully they are domestic and use latest technology.
