India donates second naval Advanced Light Helicopter to Maldives

'Gifts' will pave the way for further strengthening bilateral relations, says Madivian Minister

India on Saturday donated a second naval Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Dhruv, to the Maldives in a gesture that was described by Maldivian Minister for Defence Mohamed Nazim as "paving the way for further strengthening of ties between both countries."

A brand new, Mark-III (the latest) variant of the India-made multi-role helicopter in Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) colours was unveiled at a simple ceremony attended by Mr. Nazim, Vice-Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India's Southern Naval Command, and MNDF Brigadier General Ali Zuhair besides senior formations from both sides, officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and representatives of the helicopter manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, at naval air station Garuda in Kochi.

Cordial relation

On the last leg of his India visit, Mr. Nazim said the Maldives maintained a friendly and cordial relation with its neighbours, especially India, which stood by the nation whenever it needed support. Defence cooperation between both countries grew drastically over the past few years with Indian armed forces, particularly the Navy, contributing greatly to MNDF's capacity-building. He said the 'gift' would help the island nation's Coast Guard carry out search and rescue and medical evacuation from its far-flung territories.

Vice-Admiral Soni said India shared long-standing ties with Maldives. While Indian Navy trained MNDF personnel and despatched its ships and aircraft to patrol the Maldivian exclusive economic zone, the Maldives contributed to security in the Indian Ocean region by enhanced surveillance and anti-piracy patrol. The nation also actively participated in forums such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) and the biennial exercise Milan.

Vice-Admiral Soni told the media later that provisioning the ALH, the face of India's aviation industry, was indicative of the importance India attached to its relationship with the island nation. While the ALH already in operation with the Maldivian Coast Guard was based at the southern Maldivian island of Addu, the more advanced, second helicopter — which also sports a weather radar— would operate from the northern Hannimadhoo Island, primarily on medical evacuation duty. The helicopter would be initially manned and maintained by an all-Indian crew.

Maldives top priority

The Maldives topped India's priority alongside Bangladesh, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Defence cooperation between both countries was set for further growth, he said. As many as 16 MNDF personnel were presently undergoing training at India's Southern Naval Command, the Indian Navy's Training Command.

(The Indian Navy has trained MNDF personnel since 1988. Maldivian defence personnel subscribe to at least 35 courses every year)

T. Suvarna Raju, Director (Design and Development) of HAL, said the Mark-III variant of the indigenous chopper sported a digital cockpit and was capable of performing several roles.

India likely to give 3 Dhruv helicopters to Afghanistan next year

In a significant move, India has decided to give a set of three military transport choppers between March and May' 2014 — to the Afghan security forces, which will be the first tranche of defence equipments, The Sunday Express has learnt.

This was conveyed to Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai as he met National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon on Saturday at the Oberoi hotel in New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Karzai on Friday. Karzai and Singh had a 45-minute one-to-one meeting, with no aides or note-takers in the room, sources said.

While the issue of supplying choppers has been discussed by the top echelons of the Indian government over the last two years now, the issue has been finally settled in accordance with the Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in October 2011, in which India had assured to "equip" the Afghan forces.

It is reliably learnt the three choppers are being configured and constructed as per Afghan request at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore. While the Afghanistan government was keen on Russian-made helicopters, it seems that New Delhi managed to convince them to take indigenously-built equipment.

Afghanistan technical teams have been in touch with their Indian counterparts and the delivery schedule has been finalised for next year — spread over three months. While interacting with the media, the Afghan President Saturday said that India, while helping
his country with military equipment and training, is keeping in mind the interests of the region.

"India is conducting itself very wisely, India is concerned about the impact such a relationship with Afghanistan on the region, and while India is weighing that, it is also not shying away from providing assistance to Afghanistan. And in terms of India's support to Afghanistan in military equipment and training the facts are much better than what appears in the press," Karzai said, adding on a lighter note, that if he reveals the military help it will not remain a secret.

The Afghan President, on a four-day visit here, said he was "satisfied" with the discussions on training as well as supply of military equipment from India to his country to strengthen the security forces of Afghanistan. In February this year, he had submitted a wishlist of defence equipments to the Indian government.

Talking about the Afghan-US Bilateral Security Agreement, Karzai said he had a detailed discussions with Singh about Afghanistan's position on the issue and the Indian Prime Minister understood it.

Dhruv is more a category in between Light and medium ..

Dhruv beats Black hawk in range, service ceiling, Rate of climb and fuel tank capacity and Black hawk wins the payload by a 700kgs ..

Not bad .. :)

even though it is a Medium Vs Light Dhruv except for maybe in millage and technology and payload capacity Dhruv is doing pretty much a great job...... price is bit higher though but hey Black Hawk is there in service for decades and Dhruv just came in to the service compared to it and over the long run i am sure the price is going to come down
Not really comparable, one is a light helo, another is a medium helo.
