Army has initiated the process of acquiring new gun systems to take on enemy aircraft and missiles, a month after its chief General VK Singh raised the issue of obsolescence of air defence systems in a letter to the Prime Minister.

"The Army is planning to procure Air Defence Guns have a calibre of more than 30mm and is capable of engaging air targets," Army officials told PTI.

The process to acquire these guns has been initiated after General Singh in his letter to the Prime Minister that was leaked contended that 97% of the air defence guns were facing obsolescence.

They said the service has issued a global Request for Information in this regard recently listing its requirements.

The Army has specified that the gun should be capable of being transported by broad gauge rakes of the Railways.

The Army Air Defence has initiated several other tenders also for replacing its Russian-origin air defence systems.

For upgrading the capabilities of the Army Air Defence (AAD), the defence ministry recently said that it ahas signed contracts for procuring Akash Missile Systems and steps were being taken for upgrading Self-propelled Air Defence and Schilka air defence systems.

After the Army chief pointed out these deficiencies to the government, defence minister AK Antony had held meetings to review the capital acquisitions of the force.

The defence ministry has also taken several steps to do away with the shortage of tank ammunition and has signed contracts with the Russian Rosobornoexport for supplying ammunition for the T-90 tanks.

This news of ammo shortage has been bothering me. Perhaps we should also consider setting up infrastructure to make them in India. Same thing with ammo for rifles and machine guns.

At the moment, it was good to hear that, "The defence ministry has also taken several steps to do away with the shortage of tank ammunition and has signed contracts with the Russian Rosobornoexport for supplying ammunition for the T-90 tanks."

Great to see some domestic production (even if prototypical).

How does this compare with ZU-23? I see it has a larger calibre, but is like the dual barrel ZU-23-2. Perhaps L&T can look into a dual or quad barrel 30mm Ack Ack gun?

But IA requires more 40 mm or more calibre guns... many of those in SP version !!

Any thing that IA requires to execute their cold start doctrine has been denied to them so far, eg, heavy artillary, deep fires, tank ammunition, AD Artillary etc. Someone is being nasty about it and seems to be working to a plan !!

@pmaitra we cant do much with those old stock 30 MM, since they have limited range and now a days fighters dont dive to aim at target. probably these guns would be great against cruise missile going on the target, if used properly.

Well, then let's get 40 mm guns, but my point is get them in ZU-23-2 style dual barrel or even quad-barrel configuration.

this is the upgrade proposed by L&T for the old 30mm AAA guns.

These are the upgraded Bofors L40/70 in the original 40mm caliber.A new ballistic computer and FCS has been added to make it completely digitalised. Can it be cued from AD Radars?

Probably the best contender for a fixed AA gun system in the world today is the OERLIKON CONTRAVES SKYSHIELD this gun is the ideological successor of the weapons system shown in the video above, the only problem being the current RHEINMETALL association with this weapons system.

The Skyshield

Skyshield 35 consists of two gun mounts with built-in 35/1000 revolver cannon and the fire control unit consisting of a sensor unit and detached command post.

The photo shows the new Skyguard III multi-role air defence command and fire control unit.

The photo shows the high-performance, remotely controlled 35/1000 revolver gun firing Ahead ammunition at a rate of 1,000 rounds per minute.

The problem with the system is the ammo is clip feed not belt feed due to large caliber..

This also increase man power and the size of the system..

Indian Army for a effective AAA need something which is compact and high firepower and long range with minimum crew..

Also due to low ammo the firing training of the men is low but they are regularly trained how to use the gun so does the radar..

There is also a problem in ECM protection for radars..

this is too big, but L&t can think something to take care clip feed ammo and convert it into belt feed. But i must say we should use this more for anti cruise missile role then anti aircraft role.

PZA Loara, 2x 35mm KDA automatic cannons that can fire APDS, APFSDS, AHEAD. Based on T-72M1/PT-91 hull, so it shares spare parts commonality with T-72 tanks. Could be a very attractive proposal for IA.

Its was planned and there was a news of some deals including Loara, But there was no news it was a finished deal..

Similar chassis of T-72, from Akash so does MBT T-72..

Pitty because PZA Loara is world class system, the problem is due to MoD cuts in money was a reason why Polish Army didn't have a chance to adopt it, money from deal with India would allow to manufacture these also for PA.

However there are some long term ideas to design Loara version on WPB Anders Universal Combat Platform.

It might still be interesting proposal for IA that seeks also some light tanks, so WPB Anders can act as a basic platform for variety of vehicles in IA (LT, SPAAG, IFV, APC etc.)
