France announces air strikes in the wake of UN vote
The fifteen member states of the Security Council of the United Nations voted Thursday on a draft resolution muscled against Libya, France announced the air strikes in the wake against the army of Colonel Gaddafi.
The 15 Council members decided at 22.00 GMT on the project that includes military measures to protect civilians, but excludes the occupation of Libya.
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said late Thursday that Paris wanted military action in the coming hours if approved the draft resolution. China and Russia, traditionally hostile to the "interference" in internal affairs of member states, however, sat on the sidelines.
In New York, where he came to try to convince his counterparts to support the project, the French foreign minister, Alain Juppe, spoke of "the use of air power" to enforce the resolution.
But in Tripoli, a spokesman for the MoD said any foreign military action would "expose all air and sea traffic in the Mediterranean in danger."
"Anything mobile civilian or military will be the target of a Libyan-offensive against", he warned.
Muammar Gaddafi has announced an aggressive person "tonight" cons Benghazi stronghold of insurgents in the east. "The decision was taken. Get ready, we come tonight," he said in an audio message sent to Benghazi and broadcast on Libyan television. "We must end this charade."
The draft resolution "authorizes member states (...) to take all necessary measures (...) to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attacks" by the forces of Colonel Gaddafi, and included in Benghazi.
The project decided to establish a ban on all flights in the airspace of Libya.
"We have excellent reason to believe there will be a participation of Arab countries' operations against the army of Muammar Gaddafi, predicted Mr. Juppe. "It is a coalition operation, we are with others, we are not alone. This is not a French operation, is an international operation," he said to reporters.
There will be an American participation in military operations, still has the minister said. "This is a moment for the credibility of the UN, especially given the signal to the Arab people which we all welcome the aspiration to freedom and democracy".
"If we allow a dictator to restore its system of oppression through violence and triggering a bloodbath, how can we then say 'go ahead, get involved in a democratic process to regain your freedom +? What is our credibility? "he asked.
