Modern French nationalism promoted by the Republic since the revolution is less about tribe and more about these ethereal "Liberty" "Equality" "Secularism" concepts.
If you agree with these meme ideological tropes, and you speak the French language properly, and acquire citizenship you are considered "French".
However the French( as in a tribal sense ) did exist long before the Republic and it's Enlightenment tropes.
