Regarding the Gadgetry, I hope all gadgets get powered by a centrally powered computer and power pack preferably under the bullet proof vest and waterproof. Thats makes a solider as a system and equipment connected to him ;).

If the equipment get damaged it will cost less for a replacement them as the main power source and processing computer will be some where else protected behind the bulletproof vest, plus no headache for replacing individual batteries too.

The Uniform should act as connector terminal point for its various equipment to receive computer processed information and power to the external equipment attached to the solider (the system). This will eliminate the cucumbersome and tech savvy look alike loads of cables attached and running around the solider.

A standard terminal connector should be designed for accessing and powering all equipment, just like as in a laptop having USB port, all related equipment are designed to communicate with the laptop through one of this USB ports,

As in a Laptop,it is the main system where external equipment are connected to access information processing and acquiring power just like a USB drive, external blue tooth adapter, GPS receiver antenna, external web cam, input device etc. A solider in uniform should act as a system while the related and required equipment can get power and computer processing ability from the body of the solider aka his uniform.

A GPS receiver gets better processing ability and power lasting longevity compared to an integrated processor battery solution.
A communication transmitter have a bigger battery and more power to transmit and receive signal
Optical equipment have long lasting battery power.
Ear phone wire, microphone wires and optical instrument connection cables can be minimised in an integrated helmet unit connection arrangement where the helmet is attached to the core system by a short connection cable from the collar to the body uniform or the bullet proof vest.

If more battery power is needed an extra solider can carry extra power pack to replace the drained out battery on the go without letting the solider get stationed to recharge or replace individual equipment with a new one.

In this way,
-Mobility do not get compromised due to the fact of limitation of battery,
-Weight of equipment can be lowered comparatively,
-Battery weight issue can be resolved to some extent by employing a dedicated solider to carry the replacement instead of large, long duration and heavy battery per solider or individual power arrangement for individual equipment.
- The core system can be made more durable under the protection of the bulletproof vest.
- The core computer can can act as a WLAN to communicate in between the local solider, like passing a footage or information to the group without the need of another gizmo to inter communicate while the Palm worn display that works as a GPS display can perform as a display to share information withing the group.
- Dress minimise cabling requirement to connect various equipment with multiple access point upon the dress with a universalised port connector
- Utilities as much as you can think about, just like a laptop can be use for multiple use :borat:

They have an update report on this website:

F-INSAS Report 2012

It sounds like the Army may be making some announcements in September at this event.
Regarding the Rifle:
Failings of the INSAS weapons will be remedied within the Futuristic Indian Soldier as a System (F-INSAS) programme, and given its status as the 'first objective' of the entire modernisation effort, will begin to see real progress in 2012.The aim is to acquire modular, multi-calibre weapons, consisting of a rifle able to fire 5.56mm, 7.62mm and 6.8mm rounds, with potential for an Underbarrel Grenade Launcher (UGBL).It had been thought by some analysts that the Indian Government's reluctance to offer private tender and instead rely on its own DRDO had slowed the process for modernisation considerably, and fears of losing local industry opportunities have arguably hampered innovative competition.

It has been estimated that each advanced INSAS rifle will cost approximately 50,000 INR (£570) per unit.

Having been working with Israel on small arms R&D, it is thought that India may piece together lessons from the Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) development of the Tavor TAR-21 assault rifle, which underwent three years of testing with the IDF before its contract agreement in 2003, and was designed to be an "organic" and lightweight extension of the warfighter. The weapon is currently in the stocks of India's Special Forces. The method of developing the Tavor was to ensure that it can adapt with time to the changing requirements of combat and, as well as being compact and mobile, also accommodates user-friendly features such as a sight that does not require the shooter to close their eyes, and the capacity to integrate with a variety of advanced

Crucially, it s interchangeable for both right- and left-handed users, overcoming a traditional shortfall of many weapons. Also worth noting is that the Tavor can accommodate a grenade launcher kit, which Indian programme developers wish to include on its own upgrades.
These guys have some info, latest from IA on there own research..

im dead sure this modernization will end with just few new guns and fancy phones or pads. thats it. they dont have that much enthusiam and money to have big and effective weapon ssytem loaded on to each soldier. even after modernization indian army soldier will be hardly equivalent to today's british or american soldier.
even if they gonna modernize men they will be givin same old shitty vehicles to them making it no good use. nothing like indian humvee coming to IA

Presently DRDO, Berrata & Sig all are involved to make a multi cal rifle..

Right now only Berrata have what FINSAS demand..
Aren't the Ak-12,cz805,FN-scar able to perform the demands of F-INSAS?All the three of them are multi Cal in nature

From the DRDO newsletter :-
DG Infantry, DG RR and other senior officers of Army HQ , witnessed the demonstration of Integrated Computer, Communication and Software System (ICCS) and Software Defined Radio (SDR) being developed by Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) and Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL), two of the electronic cluster laboratories of DRDO with BEL as the Production Agency. The presentation cum-demonstration was organised by Directorate of Interaction with Services for Business (DISB), DRDO HQ with the help of PMO Futuristic Infantry Solider as a System (F-INSAS), Army HQ; CAIR and DEAL on 19 June 2012 at Brigade HQ, Delhi, under the guidance of Shri S Sundaresh, DS and CC R&D (ACE&SI), CC R&D (ECS) and Shri VS Mahalingam, DS and Director, CAIR.
The following important functionalities and hardware of F-INSAS, ICCS and SDR were demonstrated:

(i) Role-based functionalities of Coy Cdr, Platoon Cdr, Sector Cdr, and Soldier comprising common operation picture over GIS backdrop; situational awareness over GIS backdrop; blue force tracking; mission planning and task execution; integration of military symbols; integrated message management (pre-formatted and free text); biometric authentication; and physiological monitoring display and dissemination.
(ii) Hardware, manufactured by BEL with embedded software developed by CAIR comprising Commander data terminal; wrist display and authentication; planning display and authentication; navigation (GPS, DRM and DMC); hand-held IP radio (prototype with limited range of operation up to 100 m) with ad hoc network; centralised power pack and power management (14.8 V, 10 Ah); target acquisition sub-system; hand-held target acquisition sub-system; physiological monitoring sub-system; cable concealed in harness; thin film solar panel; battery charger (AC-DC, DC-DC and solar); and hand crank generator.
(iii) SDR developed by DEAL (manufactured by BEL) comprising voice, data and video transmission over live SDR links.
Good job. Now move on to the prototype stages and make it survive combat operations.
