Preface

As the first light of dawn crept over the gleaming horizon, washing the skyscrapers of 22nd century India in a warm golden glow, it heralded more than just the start of a new day. It signaled the beginning of a bold new era for the ancient land, as India stood poised at the cusp of global pre-eminence driven by its relentless march of progress.

Through pioneering achievements in technology, economics, culture and sustainability, India had managed to ascend from the shadows of its colonial past to now emerge as a shining paragon of development for the world to admire. The once-familiar streets of Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore had transformed into a vibrant, intricate tapestry, interwoven with hyperloop and monorail tracks that ferried millions in an orchestrated dance of movement.

Towering vertical farms, lush green monuments harnessing hydroponics and renewable energy, now dotted the landscape. They stood as a symbol of the country's commitment to food and energy security through indigenously developed technology, having successfully tackled the specters of hunger and poverty. The air itself seemed imbued with an infectious entrepreneurial energy and optimism for the future.

It was amidst these gleaming megacities of new India that an ensemble of characters, hailing from different walks of life, would soon find their fates intertwined in unexpected ways. Come, let me introduce you to some of them now.

First, we have Jai, a promising student and the son of struggling farmers from rural Andhra Pradesh. Fueled by relentless drive and hunger for knowledge, Jai secured admission to the prestigious University of Athamuru, winning a coveted full scholarship for his prodigious intellect. Moving to the big city all alone, his head full of dreams, Jai sees this as his golden ticket to a better life for his family mired in penury.

Next is Preeti, the academically gifted daughter of wealthy industrialists from New Delhi. Preeti grew up privileged, wanting for nothing, and developed a passion for particle physics research at a young age. But her protective parents were aghast at her desired career choice, deeming it unsuitable for their social stature. It took Preeti's non-stop cajoling and convincing before they reluctantly agreed to allow her to attend the University of Athamuru.

Ali, a gifted engineer from Kashmir, is another whose stellar exam scores secured him a place at the prestigious institution. The son of a carpenter, Ali grew up enchanted by technology and would lose himself for hours tinkering with broken gadgets and discarded parts. He saw his admission into Athamuru as the passport to realizing his inventor dreams.

The next student hailing from the snow-capped north is none other than Raj, born in Himachal Pradesh. Raj was raised by his single mother who struggled tirelessly to nurture her son's curiosity and abilities without regard for conventional gender roles. Her perseverance paid off when Raj achieved the exam rank required for the university's astronautical engineering program.

From the tropical southern coasts, we have Anjana, a star scholar and linguistic prodigy from Kerala. Growing up reading voraciously and immersing herself in music, Anjana is a force of nature. She is determined to study astrogeology and uncover the secrets woven into the composition of distant planets and stars.

Our final protagonist is Dhruv, a farm boy from Maharashtra blessed with extraordinary intelligence but cursed with extreme poverty. His alcoholic father tried to force him into menial labour, but Dhruv stubbornly pursued his education in whatever way he could. News of his selection into Athamuru was his ticket out of subsistence and into the realms of his wildest dreams.

These promising youths, hailing from every corner of the country, found themselves gathered at the University of Athamuru by some peculiar twist of circumstance. Little did they realize then that their paths were destined to converge in incredible ways in the cauldron of creativity and ambition that was Athamuru. Their lives would be forever changed in ways none could have foreseen.

The nation's capital Hyderabad is the pulsing epicenter where our tale opens. Having rapidly transformed from the sleepy historic town to a shining testament of ingenuity and technological prowess, Hyderabad thrummed with promise and pride. The city had faced its share of hardship and privation, but had emerged renewed, eager to embrace the future.

Standing tall and gleaming at the heart of this city was the sprawling campus of the University of Athamuru, globally renowned as a supernal abode of scientific exploration. Within the imposing edifices and tree-lined boulevards of Athamuru dwelled some of the finest minds in the country. Their groundbreaking research across disciplines was rapidly advancing human knowledge on all frontiers.

It was at the hallowed Athamuru that one name echoed in the corridors with hushed reverence. Students going about their business would instantly lower their voices upon passing by the research laboratory stamped prominently with his name. That name was Professor Vikramaditya Krishnan, veteran physicist and space scientist, recipient of international accolades too many to count.

What set Professor Vikramaditya apart was his pioneering work on the Holy Grail of space travel - faster-than-light speed. For decades, he stubbornly dedicated himself to unraveling the mysteries of space-time manipulation, facing ridicule from peers and setbacks at every turn. But Vikramaditya pressed on tirelessly, spurred by raw passion and an unshakable faith that the cosmos could be conquered.

Now in the winter of his life and career, the esteemed professor could see the fruits of his labour were ripe for the picking. After wrestling with obstinate theories and temperamental prototypes, his once fantastical vision was edging closer to reality every day. The astronomical knowledge accumulated by the team at Athamuru indicated that stable, technologically-generated warp fields enabling supra-luminal speeds were feasible.

Unknown to the pool of hopeful students converging at Athamuru, Vikramaditya intended to catapult a select few with the right blend of skill and daring straight into the heart of his warp research endeavors. He kept this agenda concealed, but his piercing eyes were already searching for the worthy candidates during every lecture and seminar.

This was a high-risk, high-reward approach fraught with perils. But Vikramaditya refused to flinch or compromise - after all, India's historic ascent was fueled by such audacious ambition and hunger to prove its mettle. The seeds had been planted for an unprecedented leap. Now, the time had come for the fruit to ripen.

As the students went about immersed in their syllabi, friendship circles and newfound freedoms, the future barreling towards them remained obscured. But Vikramaditya could discern the first faint tremors preceding the coming quake. The wheels of destiny governing all lives were beginning to turn.

For when genius collides with insatiable curiosity, the standing order of things is irrevocably transformed. Every now and then, such rare conjunctures become inflection points steering civilization onto untrodden trajectories. Vikramaditya was shrewd enough to recognize this unfolding singularity.

The venerable professor knew well that audacity of vision arises in those willing to question dogma and convention. So when the remarkable potentials of Jai, Preeti, Dhruv, Ali, Anjana and Raj organically intermingled within Athamuru's halls, the stage was set. The time was nigh for possibility to leap into reality.

Vikramaditya could already glimpse the silhouette of the new beckoning from the horizon. Mankind's future stood poised between the darkness of timidity, and the illumination of valiant aspiration. The choices to be made in this nexus would reverberate across generations. With this weight on his shoulders, Vikramaditya vowed to stoke the flames further, propel his vision into being and pave the way for coming ascension.

The open sky was no longer the limit, but merely where the real adventure began. The time had come to slip the surly bonds of Earth and take wing into the cosmic ocean where grander destinies awaited discovery. Vikramaditya knew the seeds he would soon sow at Athamuru would one day blossom into flowers more wondrous than any yet seen.

Chapter 1

As the sleek hyperloop pod glided out of the tunnel and sunlight flooded into the cabin, Samanth blinked and gazed contemplatively out of the windows, watching with quiet awe as the gleaming cityscapes of new India raced by in a blur. The state-of-the-art vacuum tube transportation system allowed near-supersonic commutes, delivering passengers from sleepy neighbourhoods to imposing megacities in mere minutes.

It still felt surreal to Samanth that he was hurtling towards the towering chrome and glass skyline of Hyderabad, the illustrious capital city. He leaned his forehead against the cool glass, memories of his childhood flashing by just as fast outside. Carefree days spent playing gully cricket on the streets of Madhapur, quiet evenings on the rooftop gazing at the stars and dreaming of alien worlds, Sunday trips to Birla Mandir with his family...it all seemed part of another lifetime now.

Samanth sighed, his warm breath fogging up the window for a moment, obscuring the glittering cityscape outside. He sat back, glancing around at the other passengers engrossed in their personal digital clouds - streaming movies, chatting with distant loved ones or working remotely. For most, this daily supersonic commute was already routine mundanity, but for Samanth, it still felt extraordinary.

He reached into his backpack on the seat beside him, pulling out a real paper book titled 'A History of Space Travel' with a finger-worn cover. Running his hands almost reverently over the vintage smooth pages, Samanth reflected on how far humanity had come in the decades since the heady pioneering days of space exploration depicted in the book's faded images.

Staring out of the windows again at the sprawling metropolis unfolding beneath him, it was starkly evident how profoundly technology had transformed the fabric of human civilization itself in just a century. Megacities boasting populations over 50 million, life expectancy crossing 100 years, AI and robots an inextricable part of everyday living - it was a brave new world.

Samanth's contemplative gaze followed the route of a sleek hyperloop pod shooting past on its way to Bangalore, probably accelerating commuters at a comfortable 650 miles per hour. He shook his head slightly in wonderment - just 65 years ago, humanity had still been Earth-bound without even the capability to reuse orbital rockets.

And here he was, an ordinary boy from Madhapur with stars in his eyes, making his way to the most prestigious institution in the country to follow his passion for unraveling the secrets of the cosmos. How quickly the implausible became routine reality. What marvels and advances lay in store for the future? The possibilities seemed limitless.

The hyperloop pod began to noticeably slow as it entered the final approach phase to Athamuru station, the intermediate cityscapes now blurred and indistinct outside the windows. Samanth felt his heart rate pick up a notch in excitement. Peering eagerly through the glass, he soaked in his first glimpse of the university's sprawling campus unfolding beneath him.

From his birds-eye elevated vantage point through the pod windows, Samanth spied the vast grounds, easily larger than some of the country's smaller cities, dotted with ancient trees and crisscrossed by automated vehicles. In the distance, one could make out the centrepiece - a towering glass and steel spire stretching high into the sky, housing the labs and observatory deck.

Surrounding the iconic tower, the numerous red brick institutional buildings had a stately look, housing libraries, lecture halls and administrative facilities. Even from high above, one got a palpable sense of history and prestige exuded by the architecture. Thousands of people went about their business on footpaths and bike lanes, reduced to ant-sized specks from Samanth's viewpoint.

As the hyperloop pod completed its descent and glided to a smooth stop at the sleek station platform, the cabin rapidly depressurized with a quiet hiss and the doors slid open. Samanth slung his backpack over one shoulder and stepped out, feeling his heart swell with a mixture of nervousness and anticipation.

Taking a deep breath, he slowly walked out of the platform area bathed in rays of sunlight streaming in through the arched glass roof. He joined the steady stream of passengers making their way towards the campus grounds but felt markedly different from the focused men and women striding with purpose around him. They probably had regular jobs or research duties to return to after their hyperloop commutes.

Samanth glanced frequently over his shoulder at the impressive central spire receding in the distance as he navigated past imposing buildings, following the signs directing new student arrivals. He realized with a surreal jolt that he was looking at his home for the next four years. The sheer scale and grandeur of the campus was overwhelming after cozy, chaotic Madhapur.

Passing through shaded colonnades and tree-dotted quads, Samanth took in the sights and sounds - students animatedly debating weighty academic topics, researchers rushing between buildings deeply engrossed in technical discussions, automobile-sized robots efficiently tending to the lawns and shrubbery. There was a discernible hum of meaningful activity in the air.

Finding his assigned residential hall after some searching, Samanth entered the gleaming marble-floored lobby and made his way to his room on the fifth floor. The residential suite was comfortable and modern, with all the standard amenities. But Samanth's eyes were immediately drawn to the sweeping view of the campus sprawling below his window. Gazing down at the bustling grounds, he already felt deeply connected to the place.

After unpacking quickly, Samanth set out again with directions to the main academic building where he was scheduled to attend the introductory lecture for first year students. Walking past imposing statues and intricately sculpted tiered fountains, he felt miniscule surrounded by the weight of history and achievement represented by Athamuru's hallowed halls. This institution was the pinnacle, home to some of humanity's most pioneering scientific and engineering breakthroughs.

Reaching the arched entrance of the academic building, named after the university's visionary founder, Samanth stepped into the cathedral-like foyer bustling with activity. Consulting the holographic displays for directions, he hurried towards Lecture Hall A, clutching his tablet and books. All around him students from diverse backgrounds mingled and conversed, united by their shared hunger for knowledge kindled by the finest institution in the country.

Finding his assigned seat inside the oak-paneled hall with its vaulted ceiling, Samanth was pleasantly surprised when a familiar face suddenly slid into the empty chair beside him.

"Lulu?" he exclaimed, breaking into a grin.

Lulu's face lit up and she enveloped Samanth in an exuberant hug. "I wanted to surprise you on our first day!" she said, laughing at his flabbergasted expression.

Samanth felt a warm glow spread through him - if anyone could understand his passion for unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos, it was his closest childhood friend Lulu. The two of them had spent endless childhood hours hunched over books about space or staring up at the night sky, dreaming of cosmic adventures and alien encounters. They had cultivated their mutual fascination and curiosity together over the years, envisioning a future where they solved the secrets of the universe side by side.

And now here she was, flesh and blood before him, ready to embark on this next chapter at Athamuru together. Samanth couldn't have imagined a better start to this new phase of his life. Catching up with Lulu, reminiscing about favorite haunts and memories from back home, Samanth felt a pang of nostalgia. Some things would inevitably change, but it comforted him to know he had an unshakable constant by his side in this unfamiliar environment.

Before Samanth and Lulu could delve deeper into their walk down memory lane, a gradual anticipatory hush descended upon the packed lecture hall. All chatter instantly ceased as the students became aware of the imposing, white-haired figure who had just entered the hall, making his way purposefully to the front. Samanth recognized him immediately from the numerous documentaries and podcast interviews he had obsessively watched and listened to - Professor Vikramaditya Krishnan, veteran physicist and space scientist.

In person, the professor was an even more regal and formidable presence, the way he carried himself signaling immense gravitas and wisdom. Taking his place behind the lectern, Vikramaditya's piercing eyes methodically scanned the sea of eager young faces gazing back at him in breathless silence. Samanth felt his stomach tighten in nervous knots. This was a man who brooked no fools and chose each word with surgical precision.

"Welcome all, to Introduction to Space-Time Engineering," Vikramaditya's deep voice boomed commandingly across the cavernous hall without need for amplification. "You are gathered here today, at the country's premier institution for scientific inquiry, because you have chosen to pursue truths beyond the limits of current understanding."

He began pacing slowly across the stage as he continued his address, hands clasped behind his back. "Many among you perhaps nurture dreams of traversing the vast gulfs between stars and galaxies someday. And some, imbued with courage, hope to be pioneers spearheading such ambitions." Vikramaditya's eyes flashed. "I intend to rigorously equip those select few willing to rise to the challenge, with the skills and knowledge to someday turn these dreams into tangible reality."

Samanth felt a thrill run down his spine and exchanged an electrified glance with Lulu seated beside him. This was it - the first step towards gaining the expertise needed to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos that had always beckoned to them. A gateway to guiding humanity into the stars.

For the remainder of the hour, Vikramaditya held the entire class utterly spellbound without even having to raise his voice. There was a natural authority that commanded respect effused from his distinguished bearing and piercing gaze. As he eloquently elucidated groundbreaking theories on manipulating space-time itself to enable faster-than-light space travel, Samanth could visualize the concepts coming to life. He imagined sleek spacecraft powered by warp drives faster than light itself, zipping past distant suns and nebulae. The galaxy would finally be within grasp.

Next to him, Lulu's pen raced across her notebook as she absorbed every word with rapt attention, determined not to let any detail escape her. Samanth realized his palms were slick with sweat, his heart racing. This was it - the first step towards their dream. Destiny was calling to them from the stars glinting outside these very halls. All they had to do was commit heart and soul towards answering its call.

The lecture concluded to thunderous applause as Vikramaditya drew his concluding remarks. "The future belongs to those willing to discard the shackles of convention and limitation. Remember - space is no longer the final frontier, but merely where the adventure truly begins. Godspeed."

With those parting words still hanging in the air, he exited the hall leaving an electrified audience in his wake. As Samanth finally turned to Lulu, her eyes were shining with exhilaration and purpose. He knew without exchanging a word that she was thinking exactly what he was - the future held incredible promise, if they could prove themselves worthy. Their first step had been taken. This was merely the starting point of an unimaginable journey. Their time was now. Destiny awaited.

Chapter 2

Samanth weaved his way through the tree-lined pathways criss-crossing the university grounds, clutching his tablet and books. All around him students from diverse backgrounds mingled and conversed animatedly as they made their way towards the same destination - the introductory lecture for first year students.

Despite hailing from different parts of the vast country, these young minds were united in their shared hunger for knowledge and aspiration, kindled by the promise of excellence that Athamuru represented. Farmers' sons walked alongside scions of industrial empires, differences of birth and status diluted in their common pursuit of scholarship.

Reaching a flowering grove, Samanth paused for a moment to really soak in his surroundings. Just yesterday he had been half a world away in the bustling streets of Madhapur, dodging honking autos while devouring chaat. Now here he was, wandering the manicured grounds of the country's most hallowed institution of scientific learning. It felt surreal.

Continuing towards the lecture hall, gazing up at the stately architecture of Athamuru's many storied buildings, Samanth couldn't help but feel tiny against the sweeping backdrop of heritage and achievement they embodied. Generations of pioneering minds had passed through these portals, their scholarship expanding the frontiers of knowledge for all humanity. What contributions could he even hope to make in their shadow?

Lost in thought, Samanth almost collided straight into a cleaning robot gliding silently across the path until his instincts made him swerve left at the last instant. The robot beeped indignantly at him but continued on its way without incident. Samanth heaved a sigh of relief - creating a scene on his very first day was the last thing he needed.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air as Samanth crossed a row of sleek automated kiosks arranged under flowering jacaranda trees. Students queued up enthusiastically to fuel up on caffeine before the lecture. Samanth's stomach grumbled, reminding him he had skipped breakfast in his rush to get ready on time.

Joining the back of the line, Samanth craned his neck, trying to glimpse the menu options on the kiosk screens ahead. Just then, a girl's animated voice behind him exclaimed loudly, "Samanth, is that you?" He turned to see a strikingly pretty girl wearing a purple kurta, her eyes lighting up in recognition.

"Hi...you seem to know my name but I can't quite place your face," Samanth replied sheepishly.

The girl laughed, her eyes dancing mirthfully. "It's me, Rhea! Don't you remember we took coding summer camp together years ago? You won the algorithm contest and I came second."

Samanth snapped his fingers as the memories came flooding back. "Rhea, of course! My apologies, you look so different now. How have you been?" They quickly caught up as the line moved forward, reminiscing about their childhood misadventures.

Rhea was pursuing artificial intelligence research at Athamuru, but her real passion lay in robotics. "We should totally hang out and geek out about tech like old times," she said as they took their coffee and breakfast from the kiosk. Samanth agreed readily, glad to already make a familiar connection on campus. Waving goodbye to Rhea, he briskly headed to the lecture hall, drinking his coffee on the move.

The towering oak doors were propped open, and Samanth could see the cavernous hall was already packed with chattering students. Making his way inside, he glanced around trying to spot an empty seat. Finally he spied one up on the left aisle, a few rows from the front. Samanth muttered "Excuse me" repeatedly, squeezing past knees and backpacks until he had made it to the vacant spot.

Settling into the seat, Samanth took a moment to really soak in the atmosphere. The vaulted ceiling was painted with intricate frescoes depicting astronomical phenomena, the dark wood-paneled walls were lined with plaques honoring distinguished alumni, and a ornate chandelier cast a warm glow over the room. Excitement and anticipation charged the air as the students eagerly awaited the start of their very first lecture at Athamuru.

Just then, Samanth felt someone tap him lightly on the shoulder. Turning, he saw it was a tall, lanky boy with unruly hair smiling tentatively at him. "Hey, is this seat taken?" he asked, indicating the empty spot beside Samanth.

"No, not at all," Samanth replied with a friendly smile, moving his bag from the chair. The boy slid in gratefully, stretching out his gangly legs with a sigh of relief. "I'm Ayan," he introduced himself, shaking Samanth's hand vigorously. The two freshmen quickly launched into animated conversation, bonding over their shared nervous excitement on this momentous first day.

Their lively discussion was cut short when a gradual anticipatory hush descended upon the packed lecture hall. The deafening chatter ceased instantly as all the students became aware of the imposing, white-haired figure who had just entered the hall. Samanth recognized him immediately even from this distance, his heart picking up pace. It was none other than Professor Vikramaditya Krishnan himself.

In person, the professor was an even more regal and formidable presence than Samanth had imagined, even though he had watched countless interviews and documentaries featuring the veteran physicist. Everything from his ramrod straight posture to his purposeful, measured gait signaled immense gravitas and wisdom. The very air around him seemed imbued with an aura of greatness.

Taking his place behind the ornate lectern, Vikramaditya's piercing, hawk-like eyes methodically scanned the sea of eager young faces gazing back at him in breathless silence. Samanth felt goosebumps erupt down his arms under the professor's probing gaze as it swept over him. This was a man who chose each word he uttered with surgical precision and brooked no fools.

"Welcome all, to Introduction to Space-Time Engineering," Vikramaditya's deep baritone voice boomed commandingly across the cavernous hall without need for amplification.

You envision pioneering new frontiers, expanding the horizons of human understanding." Vikramaditya's eyes flashed. "I intend to rigorously equip those select few willing to rise to the challenge, with the skills and knowledge needed to someday turn these lofty dreams into tangible reality."

Samanth and Ayan exchanged an electrified glance, barely able to remain seated. This was exactly why they had sacrificed and striven so hard to make it here - to be guided by the master towards achieving the impossible. To find their destiny among the stars that had called to them since childhood.

For the remainder of the hour, Vikramaditya transfixed the entire class, his commanding voice echoing across the vaulted hall. Not a single student dared glance at their phone or tablet even for a moment. There was a natural gravitas and piercing intellect that commanded unwavering respect, evident in his posture and probing gaze.

As the professor unfurled complex equations with a flick of his wrist, lucidly explaining groundbreaking theories on manipulating the very fabric of space-time to enable faster-than-light travel, Samanth felt goosebumps erupt again. He could vividly visualize the concepts coming to life - sleek hyperadvanced spacecraft powered by warp drives, zipping past alien suns and nebulae at unimaginable speeds.

Interstellar travel, until now the stuff of science fiction, was suddenly transformed into tantalizing possibility. Samanth realized his palms were slick with sweat, his heart hammering against his ribs. This was the first step towards unfolding his destiny among the stars. The galaxy was finally within grasp and he would let nothing deter him from reaching out to embrace it.

In the seat beside him, Ayan's pen raced across his notebook as he absorbed every word with rapt attention. Like Samanth, he clearly recognized the privilege and responsibility of learning from one of humanity's most visionary scientific minds. None of them would let this hard-won opportunity go to waste.

As Vikramaditya drew his lecture to a close, the entire hall leaped to its feet in a thunderous standing ovation. The professor's eyes crinkled ever so slightly at the corners. With a nod of acknowledgment, he turned and exited as the ovation continued. Samanth felt like he had witnessed something truly momentous, a pivotal milestone. The future had never seemed richer with promise.

"Well that was...intense!" Ayan exclaimed, grinning as he turned to Samanth. "I thought my brain would explode at one point, trying to absorb it all. What an incredible privilege to learn from him." Samanth wholeheartedly agreed as they filed out of the hall, buzzing with exhilaration. He couldn't wait to attend the next lecture.

Emerging from the semi-darkness of the hall into the sunlit quad temporarily blinded Samanth. As his vision adjusted, he suddenly heard a familiar voice excitedly calling his name. Turning, he broke into a huge smile as he saw his childhood friend Lulu waving at him. They hugged tightly, then stepped aside from the dispersing crowds.

"Samanth! Can you believe we're actually here?" Lulu exclaimed. "I wanted to keep it a surprise until orientation day," she added with a twinkle in her eye.

Samanth grinned and shook his head in amazement. Out of all the ginormous university complexes scattered across the planet, trust them to end up at the same one. He saw it as an unequivocal sign from the universe that their fates remained entwined, just as they had dreamed beneath the stars as kids.

Lulu had been Samanth's first and most ardent supporter, cultivating his fascination with space and astronomy when it was just a budding pastime. Together, they had spent endless hours planning fictional missions into deepest space, envisioning a future where they solved cosmic mysteries side by side. And now, they would get the chance to make it reality.

Noticing that Ayan was hanging back politely, Samanth quickly introduced his two friends to each other. He could already envision the three of them becoming close comrades, bonded by their shared passion. Samanth knew he couldn't have wished for a better start at Athamuru. With Lulu and now Ayan by his side, he was ready to work harder than he ever had before to prove his worth.

The three of them naturally gravitated to the nearest cafe, chatting animatedly about the lecture as they walked. They ordered some snacks to go with their coffee, having worked up fierce appetites. Settling at a table outside, they eagerly dissected the lecture and the intimidating, larger-than-life professor.

Lulu noticed the awe in Samanth's voice when he talked about Vikramaditya. "You've found your life's calling, haven't you?" she remarked, not really needing confirmation. She knew better than anyone the depth of his obsession since childhood.

Samanth nodded slowly. "I have," he replied. "And I know my destiny is somehow tied to Professor Vikramaditya's work. I can just feel it." He balled his hands into determined fists. "I want to learn everything I can from him. I'll do whatever it takes."

Ayan nodded in understanding. "You know, they say Professor Vikramaditya hand picks just a handful of students in first year for advanced research collaboration," he remarked. "That's an opportunity most graduates even don't get. Imagine being one of the chosen few."

Samanth's and Lulu's eyes lit up. Being personally mentored by the veteran scientist would be akin to a dream come true. Over coffee, the three friends made a pact - they would do everything humanely possible to prove themselves worthy in Vikramaditya's eyes. Their time was now, destiny awaited. The future glimmered with promise and possibility, if only they dared seize it.

Chapter 3

Over the next few weeks, Samanth, Lulu and Ayan cultivated the habit of lingering in the lecture hall long after each of Professor Vikramaditya's classes concluded. While the other students rushed off to enjoy the freedom of the sprawling campus, the three friends remained seated, gathering their courage to approach the imposing, white-haired figure at the front organizing his notes.

They took turns politely approaching the veteran physicist when the hall had emptied, asking insightful questions that arose during the lecture. Professor Vikramaditya was initially curt, his piercing gaze seeming to evaluate their potential. But as the weeks passed, he started to warm up to their inquisitiveness and intellectual curiosity.

Samanth could barely contain his exhilaration during their after-class exchanges with the legendary scientist, feeling like he was engaging directly with his childhood hero. He noticed that Vikramaditya seemed to linger longer while addressing his questions, clearly appreciating the depth of his scientific insight.

Lulu too demonstrated a rare acuity and quick-thinking during their discussions that often impressed Vikramaditya into allotting time to delve deeper into complex concepts with her. Under his tutelage, she was rapidly blossoming into a remarkably capable theoretical physicist, able to grasp principles intuitively.

And of course Ayan never ceased surprising them with the sheer scope and diversity of his scientific knowledge. Vikramaditya cultivated his habit of thinking laterally, often tasking Ayan to devise thought experiments elucidating difficult theories. In a short while, the three students had established an encouraging rapport with the veteran scientist.

One day, as their group lingered in the hall, Professor Vikramaditya made an unexpected announcement that instantly electrified the atmosphere. "It occurs to me that it is time you gained some hands-on experience to supplement your theoretical knowledge," he remarked. "I'm taking a small group of students to visit our state-of-the-art orbital research facility next week."

Samanth, Ayan and Lulu immediately rushed down to the front, not even needing to exchange glances. "Professor, we humbly volunteer ourselves for the opportunity," Samanth said, trying to keep the excitement out of his voice. The other two chimed in, voicing their eagerness.

Vikramaditya regarded the bright-eyed trio pensively for a long moment. Impressed by their initiative and hunger to learn, he finally nodded. "Very well, I will authorize your visit," he said. "Be warned - what you witness will be beyond anything you've seen." They could hardly contain their exhilaration for the next week.

The morning of the visit, Samanth arrived at the shuttle base before dawn, too keyed up to grab more than a few hours of sleep. The gleaming white craft that would ferry them to the orbital station stood ready on the launch pad, bathed in floodlights. Its smooth, metallic hull almost seemed to vibrate with pent-up power.

Lulu and Ayan arrived soon after, looking equal parts exhilarated and nervous. Vikramaditya materialized just as support crews were helping the students board. "Ready for an experience you will never forget?" he asked, eyes twinkling. Strapped into their seats as launch commenced, they could only nod mutely, beyond words.

The thunderous controlled explosion of lift-off was unlike anything Samanth had imagined. He felt like a rag doll pinned back by g-forces as the shuttle rapidly pierced layers of atmosphere. Looking out of the porthole at Earth's curvature receding to the inky blackness of space was a literally dizzying experience.

Docking at the orbital station, a colossal structure powered by sprawling solar arrays floating in permanent free fall, Vikramaditya personally greeted the awestruck students at the airlock. "Let's begin the tour with our state-of-the-art labs, where we conduct experiments too volatile for Earth-bound facilities," he said.

Walking through various labs bristling with complex instrumentation and humming prototype machinery, Samanth had to remind himself to breathe. He was actually in space! Vikramaditya explained the purpose of each lab, outlining extraordinary experiments being conducted.

Finally, they reached a sealed area right at the core of the station. Vikramaditya keyed in his access code, waiting for the reinforced sliding doors to fully part before ushering them inside. "Feast your eyes on our most ambitious initiative. Something I think will particularly fascinate you three," he remarked. "Our pride and joy - the warp core prototype!"

Samanth, Lulu and Ayan peered down at the enclosed apparatus from the safety of the overhead viewing gallery. According to theory, the precisely configured core could actually distort and manipulate space-time by generating graviton particles using focused energy pulses. Samanth's mind reeled as he grasped the implications - this could enable faster-than-light space travel!

"I happen to be conducting a live test today," Vikramaditya revealed. "Would you three care to don a space suit and assist me up close?" They needed no second invitation, scrambling to get ready. Once ensconced in the warp core laboratory, Vikramaditya explained their roles. "I will initiate the experiment. Your job is to carefully monitor the outputs of each instrument, ensuring optimal core stability."

Heart hammering inside the bulky suit, Samanth moved into position, eyes fixed on the display screens. This was actually happening! At Vikramaditya's signal, the warp core throbbed with otherworldly energies, bathing the lab in an eerie glow. Samanth scrutinized the rapid fluctuation of readings, ready to abort the test if anything went out of bounds.

The veteran scientist himself seemed transfixed, as if willing his life's work to succeed through sheer mental exertion. But suddenly the glow died, instruments flatlining. Vikramaditya pursed his lips, frustration evident. "Again the reaction destabilized," he muttered. "The containment parameters still elude me."

As they exited the airlock, Samanth's sharp mind was already at work analyzing what had happened in there, replaying the dramatic moments. He needed to unwind after the heady experience, so he took the opportunity to explore a bit while Vikramaditya discussed future plans with the station director. Drifting weightlessly from viewport to viewport, Earth suspended like a blue bauble mesmerized Samanth.

Late that sleepless night, enveloped by the vastness of space outside his station quarters, an innovative theory slowly took shape in Samanth's head. At breakfast next morning, he hesitantly outlined an idea to Vikramaditya about adjusting the warp core's containment field strength, along with supporting calculations on his tablet.

The professor's eyebrows shot up as he quickly scrolled through Samanth's neatly outlined proposal. "My word, I do believe you're onto something crucial that eluded me, Samanth," Vikramaditya finally said. "Let us test your hypothesis without delay." Heart thudding inside his suit once again, Samanth watched the initiated core pulsate with resonating gravitons, its stability maintained this time for precious minutes before the reaction expired.

Vikramaditya's approving hand on his shoulder, the proudest moment of his life, erased any lingering self-doubts in Samanth's mind. "You've brought us one step closer to the stars, my boy!" the professor said, eyes twinkling. Samanth allowed himself to bask in the glow of this milestone achievement. He had dared to think big, and been rewarded beyond expectations. The future now shone brighter with promise. Destiny awaited!
