Bengaluru: In a boost to its offensive capability, the Army has started taking delivery of its first heterogeneous swarm Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system for use on the battlefield, ThePrint has learnt.

This delivery may possibly be the world’s first operational high density swarming UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) induction for military applications, especially given that most swarm drone research is yet to be operationalised across the world.

Supplied by an Indian start up – Bengaluru based NewSpace Research & Technologies – the swarm of 100 drones is capable of hitting targets at least 50 kms away into enemy territory.
Defence sources told ThePrint that the delivery has just begun and comes at a time when the country’s military air show Aero India began here.

The swarming systems were ordered under the emergency procurement (EP) and show that India has taken a global lead with induction of a cutting edge ‘Made in India’ technology which is at par, if not ahead, of its peers across the world, sources said.
They added that this is a part of the government’s Aatmanirbhar effort to indigenise critical and disruptive military technologies.


Sources explained that these drones are capable of carrying bombs of a particular weight and can home into a target, like moving armoured columns, artillery positions, and infantry bunkers and attack.
They added that swarm drones are the solution for a closely contested airspace where individual drones can be taken down.

The IAF will also induct operational swarming UAS in the near future.

ThePrint reached out to Col Ramit Arora (Retd), Business Development head at NewSpace Research. He confirmed that the deliveries to users against contracts placed have started recently, but refused to share any further detail.
Defence sources confirmed that the drones delivered by NewSpace, and a follow-on homogeneous swarm drone delivery from Raphe Mphibr in days ahead, will be inducted into the mechanised forces where they will be used for surveillance and attack missions.

Grene Robotics Unveils India's First AI-Driven Advanced Autonomous Anti-Drone System

Grene Robotics, a Hyderabad-based robotics company, has introduced an advanced autonomous anti-drone system, called Indrajaal, powered by artificial intelligence (AI). “We will never forget the June 27, 2021 drone attack on the Jammu airport and the June 15 Galwan attack. At that time, we wondered what solution we had against drones and swarms. Today, Indrajaal has given us the answer and shown that it is possible.”
Indrajaal is touted as the world’s only wide-area Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) and can protect large areas, including entire cities, from various types of drones. It provides comprehensive security against moving threats, which static defense systems cannot handle effectively. “From low radar cross section (RCS) threats to medium and high-altitude long endurance (MALE and HALE) UAVs, loitering munitions, smart bombs, rocket showers, nano and micro drones, swarm drones, and more, we have it all covered,” said Wing Commander Sai Mallela, co-founder of Grene Robotics. He had earlier helped develop the Integrated Air Command and Control System for the Indian Air Force, to adopt network-based operations, and also helped orchestrate a multi-million dollar import substitution for the forces.

The system can detect, identify, classify, track, and neutralize drone threats in real-time, offering 360-degree protection. It is designed to defend against all classes and levels of autonomous drones over an area of 4,000 square kilometers. Indrajaal is considered a crucial solution for addressing the increasing threat of hostile UAV activity in India, and it is expected to have applications in defense, public infrastructure protection, and private sectors.

Mr Raju says that in the near future, we will see a lot of drone activity, and 95% of them will be friendly drones rather than threats. “Indrajaal can identify friendly drones from foes.” On the cost, Mr Raju says, “If I am building the Telangana secretariat for 200-300 crore, this system would cost about 5 crore. This is a typical capital infrastructure cost to protect what you are building. For example, level 4 data centres have fire protection, and they also need drone protection as part of their capital infrastructure.”

Wing Commander Sai Mallela explains that current deployments have limitations, as stand-alone systems are not scalable or practical. “Only radar-based detections are inaccurate at low radar cross section (RCS) and close to the ground. They are even incapable of identifying the operating radio frequency.” The system’s cost is comparable to other capital infrastructure costs for protecting critical assets. The founders of Grene Robotics believe that as drone activity continues to rise, Indrajaal will play a vital role in safeguarding national security. The system can distinguish between friendly and hostile drones, making it a valuable tool for managing the increasing number of drones in the airspace.

Is there any further enhancement of the effort to electronically incapacitate the enemy drone before it reaches the target.

This system I believe was in use or being tested by BSF on LOC/International border to prevent smugglers dropping drugs in Punjab border or killing the Pakistani‘s drones from dropping off arms and ammunition for terrorists. These were the preliminary use to kill the drone in the air

As we are getting more and more information from the Ukraine war, more sophisticated systems are in use to kill the military drone while in flight. India needs these sophisticated system as Pakistan has bought lots of Chinese military drones for battle usage.

Drones for Indian Military

The Ukraine war has changed the battlefield completely. Drones and missiles are playing a greater role than tanks and fighter jets. The Israeli invasion of Gaza has completely revolutionized the drone warfare.

Indian Generals and Air Marshals are battle hardened on tanks and fighter jets. Although, they are mindful of the current battle scenarios but laying heavy stress to acquire tanks, artillery and fighter jets. The drone technology and anti drone technology is not first on their mind. In fact it should be the first.

In my opinion stress on 5th and 6th generation aircraft should be less. Stress should be on drones and anti drone technology and how to get around the inefficient DRDO to acquire all that what we need. Already bankrupt Pakistan has scored big by acquiring Turkish very reliable and accurate drones, which proved so valuable in Armenia-Azerbaijan war. After that these succeeded during the initial faces of Ukraine war.

Yes, India has the necessary technology to get the drones, flying ammunition, swarm drones etc. It is all in the hands of the private sector. They are one who are taking the initiative to build, not DRDO. If DRDO has any worthwhile technology built then they should share it with the private sector and not try to build it themselves. If they do then they will mess it up.

I am inviting opinions on speeding up drones and anti drones work. I am inviting opinion also on not concentrating on 5th and 6th generation aircraft. That is DRDO fancy and gives them something to crow about but never deliver.

I am also taking exception to stupidly delayed placing of order of home made artillery which is all waiting for order and is not happening because a mid rank military officer thinks that a mere one extra ton makes the artillery piece too heavy although he ignores the fact that ATAGS has a greater range.
