OC U-turn on word to Army
Dipak Kumar Dash, TNN, Oct 12, 2010, 11.26pm IST
NEW DELHI: The Army which saved the day for the organizing committee (OC) by constructing foot-overbridges and providing men and material free of cost for the successful commencement of the Commonwealth Games tasted the thanklessness of the OC.
Highly placed sources in the forces said though the OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi had promised to give at least 378 tickets of Rs 750 each to the forces for the closing ceremony, the committee has now informed them of their inability to keep their word.
Said a senior officer, "On October 8 Kalmadi had assured the President Services Sports Control Board of giving equal number of tickets for the closing ceremony. But on Monday, it informed that no ticket was available for us despite the fact that we had made the advance payment for the tickets. The official reason was that there was reduction of 450 seats in case of one category of tickets,'' he added.
However, SPS Dhillon, deputy director general of the OC said they have informed the forces that only 250 tickets could be given to them since all tickets have been sold out. "We had taken good care of the forces in the opening ceremony and it is also being done in the case of closing ceremony. When everything is going perfectly fine, some people are raking up insignificant issues,'' he claimed.
