F-16V Completes Major Capability Milestone

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 20, 2014 – The newest configuration of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the F-16V, has reached a major capability milestone with the integration of a new Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. "Completing this milestone on schedule demonstrates our ability to meet program commitments," said Roderick McLean, vice president and general manager of the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin. "It proves once again why customers turn to Lockheed Martin to upgrade their F-16 fleets and advance the mission capability of the world's most effective 4th generation multi-role fighter." The completion of this AESA radar Critical Design Review ensures Northrop Grumman's Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) design meets all specified U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin requirements. Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] will continue with follow-on activities such as development integration and ground and flight test for Taiwan's fleet of 144 Block 20 F-16A/B fighter jets. With the upgrade to the new SABR and enhancements to the mission computer, vehicle systems, aircraft structure, cockpit and electronic warfare system, Taiwan moves forward as the launch customer for the new F-16V configuration. More than 4,550 F-16 aircraft have been delivered to date, and production is expected to continue through 2017, with major upgrades being incorporated for all F-16 versions.

Can anyone explain me the difference between the FPA seekers/staring arrays of the modern WVR missiles and older IR seekers? Why do FPA seekers have better performance even though both are passively operated? Thanks @p2prada @Twinblade

Imaging infra red seekers using focal place array work on image analysis. The image is as seen in infra red region like that seen by a camera and the seeker tracks the entire object from which IR is being emitted, so even if flares are ejected, the seeker can discern between the decoy and the launching platform by analysing the image. Older IR seekers used to see blobs of IR emission, thus ejecting flares will lead to multiple 'blobs' of IR emissions going in different directions, thus confusing the seeker. Therefore decoys have a low success rate against IIR seekers.

Yes, that much I understood. However older seekers used to scan for the target mechanically which the staring array doesn't do. So I thought that the field of view of a staring array will be much smaller than that of a mechanically moved seeker. However, HOBS capability capability was added in AIM9M. So can you please explain why a staring seeker has a larger field of view?

Older arrays use serial scanning ie several linear elements move mechanically to scan the complete image. The information missed between the elements is filled by interlacing. FPAs use a grid of elements thus no mechanical movement is required, and each of the element can scan it's own micro sector. With no mechanical movement required, a larger array can be enclosed in the same space, thus improving the FOV.

I can do some introduction about RussianAF actions on the East Front in the past 20 years... the 'victim'(LOL...just kidding) is our neighbour--Japan

the Russian long range Tu95 would do the monthly flying training around the Japan's four main islands...just outside of the Japan baseline of territorial sea but within the air defense identification zone ...and F15J would accompany these old friends every time ...normally two Tu95 would form a formation for such a training mission...

the Russian Airplane's roadmap recorded and published by the Japanese( Red lines)

By this September ,in 6 months, Japan launched 324 Emergency interception against Russian. and in 2013-2014(2013 Apr-- 2014 Mar), the total mumber was just 359 in total...

Not always.

In the post-Soviet collapse years, such exercises were grounded, due to financial crunch, but they have always been part of Russian (or Soviet) military doctrine, and have been revived in recent years.

I cannot attest to the flight path shown in the picture. There could be variations introduced, considering the fact that NATO has moved closer to the Russian border since 1991.

the power of discourse of Western Government and Media is another kind of "weapon of mass destruction" in their hands...
when they want to start the smear campaign , such daily happening issues would be highlighted on purpose at the right time...but if you follow the history about these actions, you would know that was just the ordinary state in the area...nothing new, nothing special...

UK's Tornado ADV and Typhoon from the Scotland often intercept the Russian jets over the Northern Sea in the past decades...so does the F15J of Japan Self Defense Forces...

---------------------
a typical JSDF notification when interception occured...JSDF publish such notification on their Website very actively and timely....
BTW, the jets from PLAAF or PLANAF were also the leading actors in such notifications...

1. Text part-- basic information including : Target info, time , target action and JSDF's countermeasure

2. the sketch of target's movement

3. the Image or Video of target taken by the intercept fighters or P3C...

Israel completes F-16 Barak upgrade

The Israeli air force has completed an extensive upgrade of its Lockheed Martin F-16C/Ds, which one source says has brought the fleet back to "peak operational capability". Work conducted under the Barak 2020 programme has included structural treatments to the fighter's airframe and the installation of new heads-up display and digital debriefing systems. Additional systems have also been fitted, but there have been no details released about their capabilities.

The upgrade has been performed at the squadron level under the supervision of the air force's central maintenance depot, main technical unit number 22. The programme was completed a few days before the start of Israel's "Protective Edge" operation in Gaza earlier this year, in which the upgraded F-16s were involved.

This is how professionals do it. On common roads with twin engines you do not need any "sloped runways"

What actually is Indians aircraft carrier strategy? How many are you gonna get? Are you gonna "rule the waves?". Should Finland be worried?
