Air-to-air variant of BrahMos soon: Sivathanu Pillai

An air-to-air variant of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile would be inducted into the Indian Air Force by 2012, said A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Executive Officer of BrahMos Aerospace and chief controller of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), here on Sunday.
Addressing media persons at the Chennai Science Festival, he said that BrahMos packs in nine times more destructive capacity than any other cruise missile of its class in the world. Much of the missile's blast impact is due to the high velocity that it achieves, which translates into high kinetic energy. Having the capability to travel at three times the speed of sound (Mach 3), it can cover a kilometre in a second. "Work has already commenced on designing a hypersonic missile in collaboration with Russia. It would be able to achieve speeds of Mach 7," said Mr. Pillai. Delivering a talk on 'Science in Indian defence' at the science festival, he took the audience, consisting largely of school students, on a tour of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP). He gave a historical account of the reasons behind the development of the ballistic missile programme that consists of a battery of five missiles – Agni, Prithvi, Akash, Trishul and Nag.
Peppered with interesting anecdotes and missile launch footage, Mr.Pillai paused ever so often to ask a question or two – about Newton's third law or about Tipu Sultan's use of rockets in his fight against the British in 1792.
While describing the projectile and re-entry mechanism of a missile, he said that special composite material had to be developed to design the nose cone of a missile as it had to withstand temperatures as high as 3,000 degree Celsius during re-entry into the atmosphere.
"It was a woman scientist called G. Rohini Devi, who developed the carbon-carbon composite which is used in every Indian missile in operation today," Mr.Pillai said. "Young girls in the audience must become like her," he said. Designing the carbon-carbon composite material involved massive amounts of mathematical calculation, but India had only one American- built supercomputer in 1986 and it was used for weather prediction. To take forward the nascent missile programme, a supercomputer was indigenously developed within 24 months, said Mr.Pillai.
The parallel processing supercomputer was called Phase+ and was designed by 14 young college graduates.

I still don't see IN's Brahmos orders for IL38 nor we could hear Brahmos Corp talking about schedule of same. Like MKI, several changes on IL38 & its air-launched Brahmos will be required. Brahmos for IL38 is as important as the same for MKI.

Is anybody aware of any latest development on this?

BrahMos secures USD 4 billion order to deliver cruise missiles

Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace has secured orders from the Armed Forces to deliver supersonic cruise missiles, valued at USD four billion, a top company official said Tuesday.

The orders by Army, Navy and Air Force would be executed in the next five-six years, BrahMos Aerospace Chief Executive and Managing Director A Sivathanu Pillai told PTI.

The order book was projected to swell to USD 10 billion in the next 10-15 years given the demand in India, Russia and "other countries", which he did not name.

BrahMos Aerospace is a USD 300 million joint venture between Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) that holds 50.5 per cent stake and Military Industrial Consortium/MPO Machinostroyenia of Russia the remaining equity.

BRAHMOS cruise missiles with a range of 290 km are already in service in the Army and Navy. "We are now concentrating on the air version of the cruise missile and under-water version.

"So, all the three services are going to have the BrahMos system," Pillai said.

The Sukhoi-30 fitted with the missile, whose weight would be reduced from 3.9 tonnes to 2.5 tonnes, would be flown next year, he said.

Pillai said both India and Russia were augmenting capacity to manufacture the missiles to meet the demand.

Indian industries providing components for the missile programme are expected to almost double their investment in the next two-three years to scale up supplies.

BrahMos was bringing in new industries as suppliers to enhance competition and bring down component prices, he said.

Currently, the engine and seeker were the Russian components in the cruise missile he said, adding "we are going to make them in India."

BrahMos "next target" is to develop hypersonic reusable missiles with Russia, he said.

PM Visits BrahMos Thiruvananthapuram

About the hypersonic cruise missile, a more advanced version of the BrahMos, Dr Saraswat said it also would be ready by 2012. A successful test of the technology of the missile was carried out in a laboratory in May 2008 at a speed of 6.5 Mach. The hypersonic demonstrator vehicle will attain a level flight, for a ground-to-ground test, at a height of 30 km from the ground, before it hits the target with a speed between seven and eight Mach.

The hypersonic missile BrahMos-2 will be the Mach 8 version of the missile. It will be the country's first hypersonic cruise missile. It is an advanced version of the present air-launched missile.

DRDO and NPO-Mash are working on a sustained flight scramjet, which will be the core element in the Mark-2 version of BrahMos.

Manmohan commends Brahmos Team

The prestigious weapon, which has already been inducted into the Navy and the Army, would have its air version tested on Su- 30 MKI aircraft next year. The prototype of the universal BrahMos launcher, designed and built indigenously by BATL, came in for appreciation from Mr. Singh. The six-metre-long launcher, fabricated from large aerospace grade extrusions, is the first and the largest launcher built within India.

"The Prime Minister was keen to know the standing of BrahMos in comparison with other missile systems in the world. He was particularly interested in its speed, accuracy and reliability and queried on the intricacies of its propulsion, guidance and control," Mr. Pillai said.

Mr. Singh reviewed the domestic, public and private industrial infrastructure available to produce a number of BrahMos missiles, and ground systems for meeting the requirements of the three Services. He commended the steps taken for product support in frontier regions to ensure the readiness of the systems.

Despite having a reasonable life-cycle cost, the cost per each BrahMos missile seemed high, thanks to the low volume of production. But the use of Indian raw material to make its subsystems, low maintenance cost, and high target destruction rate made it cost-effective. This necessitated setting up of a series of production centres across the country, said a top BrahMos functionary. "This was a point appreciated by the Prime Minister," he said.

Later, Mr. Singh visited an operational BrahMos mobile command post and an autonomous BrahMos launcher of the Army, where he was briefed by Lieutenant-General Vinod Nayanar, Director General of Artillery.

A BATL-made Vikas engine for the liquid stage of Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) GSLV and PSLV was among the exhibits. (BATL has so far delivered close to 20 such engines). The subsystems made by BATL for space, atomic and missile programmes were also on display.

BRAHMOS missile integrated with Su-30 MKI fighter on display. A BNS photo

The air launched version of BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system integrated with Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter on display is a major attraction at Aero 2011.

The air launched version has lesser weight and additional rear fins for aerodynamic stability during separation from the aircraft and launch.

The Air Force (IAF) has chosen the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft as the launch platform for the BRAHMOS missile.

Some exclusive modifications are being made in the aircraft to use it as a platform for launching the missile. The test of air-launched version of BRAHMOS is expected to take place in 2012, BrahMos Aerospace Chief A Sivathanu Pillai has said.

BRAHMOS cruise missile can be launched from aircraft, ships, submarine and land.

The cruise missile has flight range of up to 290-km with supersonic speed all through the flight, leading to shorter flight time, consequently ensuring lower dispersion of targets, quicker engagement time and non-interception by any known weapon system in the world.
