GXV-T Crew Augmentation Concept Video

One of the key goals of DARPA's Ground X-Vehicle Technologies (GXV-T) program is improving the survivability of ground-based armored fighting vehicles through crew augmentation. Crew augmentation involves improved physical and electronically assisted situational awareness for crew and passengers. It also involves semi- autonomous driver assistance and automation of key crew functions similar to capabilities found in modern commercial airplane cockpits to reduce onboard crew and training requirements. This concept video illustrates five of many potential approaches: "¢ A closed cockpit that would use visualization technologies to provide high-definition, wide-angle visibility of external conditions "¢ Path planning that would display optimal routes "¢ Sensors that would use a variety of technologies to visualize surroundings and identify and track allies and adversaries "¢ Terrain classification that would evaluate surroundings for optimal travel surfaces "¢ Autopilot capabilities that would automate routine driving tasks to enable drivers to focus on more strategic activities.

It seems that US Army plans silently some sort of modernization for M2 IFV's. This looks like Kongsberg unmanned turret, same turret is tested on the new Stryker APC variant.

Such turret improves a lot, have better main armament (30mm automatic cannon instead of 25mm automatic cannon on the standard turret), but also does not take space inside the hull, so M2 will be capable to carry 3 crew members, and perhaps 9 dismounts.
Clearer pictures and descriptions of the Kongsberg MCT30 turret:

he MCT30 turret from Kongsberg mounted on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. As a remote controlled turret the overhead installation frees much needed space in the protected fighting compartment, while leaving the commander and gunner adequate operating space below. The turret is accessible from the hull and the gun can be reloaded manually if required; the turret could also have a hatch to enable the vehicle commander to lok out if necessary.

he turret mounts the XM-813 automatic gun from ATK, a linkless, automatic dual feed system that can fire two types of rounds. The gun was developed for the Future Combat Systems (FCS) program and was considered for fielding with the GCV. The canon is interchangable with either 30 or 40mm barrels, having only six caliber-specific parts to replace.

While the 30mm family already has four ammunition types – HE-Incindiary, practice, HE with delay/impact fuse and HE airburst with time setting adjustment. In, the 40 mm family has only two – HE/airburst and APFSDS. ATK is in theprocess of migrating all types to both calibers.

Not much have changed in 70 years.
It turned out to be the most successful method for protection against ATGMs and RPGs in the ratio of price-quality . You can put ERA "Nozh (Knife)" or APS "Dozd (Rain)", but it is much more expensive.
