We need to stop sharing such crappy paid articles.

463 crores is 67.4 mil$ a piece.
In comparision, Brazil signed a 4.68 bil$ deal for 36 Gripen E which is 130mil$ a piece
Pakistan was about to sign for 8 F-16 for 700mil$ in 2015-16 which is 87.5mil$ each.
Rafale as we all know costed over 200$ a each.

So Tejas mk1A be it 67.4 - 90 mil$ (inclusive everything) is still on the lowest side.

Downvote such paid news.
Include the missiles and maintenance price conveniently not included in the other.
Su30 is cheaper than Tejas and that is the main point. By the way, Gripen cost is 65 million dollars a piece,not 130. The Gripen for brazil is given on loan and includes maintenance, offsets and interest rates.

Tejas does not have any missile system yet. India has not inducted any missile yet.

The Su-30MKI contract was signed 18 years ago. That cannot be compared with a contract being signed in 2018-19 with the inflation rates.

I am mad at the FOC delay over again.
ADA and HAL should just say FOC not before Dec 2019 with these feature set and try to deliver before that rather than putting off people :facepalm:.

HAL supplies Su30 even now at the same rate. HAL has increased the cost from 36 million to today's 62 million dollars due to inflation. No contract specifies fixed cost when the delivery is phased. Inflation is always taken into account. Even Rafale contract has inflation rate

The euphoria within the defence establishment over the induction of the first indigenous Light Combat Aircraft into the IAF appears to have subsided with the Defence Ministry forming a committee to look into the “high price” demanded by Bengaluru-based public sector manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), for Tejas Mark1A.

Sources told The Indian Express that in response to a request for a proposal for 83 Tejas Mark1A fighter jets issued by the IAF in December last year, HAL quoted a price of Rs 463 crore per jet in April. This raised eyebrows in the government, sources said, as the price compared unfavourably even with more modern foreign fighters. “The HAL supplies the more modern Russian Sukhoi fighter, which it assembles at Nashik, at Rs 415 crore. The Russians supply it at Rs 330 crore. The Swedish Gripen was offered to us for Rs 455 crore, and F-16 for Rs 380 crore, and both were to be made in India. The HAL itself gave us Tejas Mark1 at Rs 100 crore less. This price for an improved version seems high,” sources said.

Concerned about the price for an indigenous fighter jet, which the government has been keen to promote under Make in India scheme, the committee set up by the Defence Ministry will look into the pricing of military equipment manufactured by defence PSUs. The committee is headed by Principal Advisor (Cost) in the ministry and is likely to submit its report in the next few weeks.

Once the committee submits its report, the ministry will form a commercial negotiations committee (CNC) to bring down HAL’s price for the jet. The contract for 83 jets, sources said, will take another year before it is finally signed.

According to sources, the Defence Ministry is also concerned about the delay in supply of the existing order of the first lot of 40 Tejas fighter jets. In last three years, only nine fighter jets in Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) mode were supplied against an order of 20. The order for another 20 Tejas jets in Final Operational Clearance (FOC) has not even begun, as the FOC has not yet been attained by the aircraft. The ministry has also agreed that the HAL will supply eight trainer aircraft out of 40, after the 36 Tejas Mark1 have been supplied. “The idea was that HAL will produce 18 Tejas fighters every year. That is the only way we can provide IAF to make up its numbers as its older fighters go out of service. But there has been a delay and we are in touch with HAL about it,” sources said.

The ministry had also asked IAF about allegations that it had made constant changes in ASQR (Air Staff Quality Requirements), which could have led to the delay. They found that there have been no changes in the ASQR of Tejas Mark1A, since it was first formalised in 2014. Even in the case of Tejas Mark1, the IAF had given 135 concessions on the ASQR to HAL.

“We were somewhat surprised to learn that contrary to the impression, there have been no changes in the requirements given by the IAF, except for items which had reached obsolescence. Mark1 had no Electronic Warfare capability and before Mark2 could be produced, Mark1A is meant to fill up that gap. Those were not additional requirements added later, but formulated in 2014 itself when HAL offered Mark1A,” sources explained.

The problem, sources said, are mainly of coordination and ownership of the Tejas project between the HAL, IAF and Aeronautical Development Authority (ADA). Borrowing from the successful Navy model of indigenous defence production, ministry is now asking for a senior member of IAF on the board of HAL for greater coordination.

The Tejas indigenous fighter project was first conceived in 1984, benchmarked against the Mirage2000, with a view to replace IAF’s ageing Mig21 fleet. The order for first 20 Tejas Mark1 (IOC) was placed in 2006, and the jet inducted in the IAF in 2016.:india::india:

I'm afraid you are comparing dry price of the sole plane, and a complete package with support, some training, test bench....

Rafale dry price is in the 90€ million each. 200 million includes base accomodation, 5 or 7 years of support, indigenisation (integration of Astra, Spice 250, Israeli's laser designator)...

No need to get mad, just relax wait and see what "actually" comes and when. Also don't jump on everything the media trys to sensationalise, because nothing has changed from the plans =>

You need to distinguish between flyaway and system costs!

The flyaway cost is the base production cost of the fighter. That's what governments pay, that already funded the development of the fighter.
Export customers however pay the flyaway price + additional costs for training, spares, logistics... => which adds up to the system cost!

The around 200 million for Indian Rafales is the system cost, while the GoI has confirmed that the flyaway cost was 670 crore INR each = around 100 million USD, depending on the exchange rate.

So the costs HAL is asking from the government here, are the flyaway cost for the base production version of the MK1A and we have seen such reports for quite some time, that the costs could be high. That's not even surprising if you think about the low production numbers of LCA so far and the high foreign content in the MK1A, but the cost should come down over time. We have seen the same with other indigenous arms too, where the initial cost of Arjun or Akash are actually quite high.

thank s for the news.. something to make us happy..... bdw hal and ada are playing with our thoughts.............
and sometimes I feel they take their time ......to make a more better tejas....
By nature PSU's and DPSU's are risk averse. They will take their time, but they will get it done. HAL Dhruv is a good example.
We can just hope that by the time MK2 gets going, they streamline their internal processes.

bhai log ..how many f404 and f414 we have....coz....if us sanctions us.. .......then ....we will suffer. a lot. .we won't get engine for tejas....both f404 and f414....

if payment was made ....then they have to deliver

Shameless people. better not talk much about them. It makes us shame and angry every time they extend FOC dead line. Some time in February, they told that they may get FOC even before June dead line and now they have conveniently extended it to December.

Suvarna Raju in 2017 had said that FOC will be definitely by december 2018 but they will try to get it by July.

The facilities that IAF have created at Sular are amazing, shows they are committed to the LCA, I just wish that they weren’t so “spoilt”, should’ve ordered 60-80 LCA Mk.1 from
The outset then asked for 83 MK.1A, his would keep production ticking over in the interim.


Production is a real concern now, HAL were meant to be churning out 1/month but after the highs of March (delivered) not a single new SP has flown since then?! What is their excuse? This is utterly unacceptable, 3 months have gone by now with no new SPs, unless HAL stagger deliveries and we see a few months down the line with 2-3 SPs churned out.

Aside from that, IAF now has their baby home, good things are expected now, this is truly history in the making.
