I would say HAL should modify and hand over LSP,s to IAF.

LSP used for testing and up-gradation purpose by HAL . i don't know whether after that it will go to IAF or not..

8, I suppose for now. With Adhoc 2nd line converted from hanger 11, and when 3rd line comes up 8 more will be added = 19. And if HAL is able to outsource 80% work they will be able to produce around 24-28 LCA per year.

HAL sets up second Tejas production line

Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has set up a second line for the series production of Tejas. The new line has come up at Aircraft Division in December 2016, with the facility now being equipped with full-fledged assembly jigs.

Currently Tejas SP-5 is being integrated here, while SP-4 already moved to the final stages of systems checking at the LCA Division. HAL has converted the erstwhile Kiran hangar to set up this additional production line.

The second line when fully operational can produce three aircraft per year.

HAL Chairman T Suvarna Raju told Mathrubhumi that his team is committed to delivering the remaining series production Tejas platforms without any delays.

“We had our share of concerns and all that has been put behind now. We had adopted all modern production philosophies to roll out a world class fighter. The feedback from the user has been encouraging. You will see SP-4 and SP-5 flying soon,” says Raju.

HAL hopes to roll out 3 Tejas from the new line, once fully operational.

The additional facility has been set up notwithstanding the approval from Ministry of Defence for another full-fledged Tejas production line. This is to augment the Tejas production so that the Indian Air Force could strengthen the No 45 Squadron.

HAL awaits the crucial Cabinet Committee on Security nod for the third Tejas production line. Around 30,000 sq meters of HAL land has been identified near Nekkundi for setting up structural assembly hangar, process shop and sheet metal shop, among others.

During a recent visit to Tejas facilities, V Sridharan, ED of LCA Division, gave an update on the series of new initiatives taken by HAL.

“We have established a new tarmac for the No 45 Squadron for day and night operations. A second dedicated drop tank test rig also has come up now, in addition to a new storage area space as well,” says Sridharan.

He said during the outstation detachment at AFS Thanjavur recently, SP-1 and SP-2 flew seven sorties in a single day.

The new tarmac at LCA Division for No 45 Squadron is capable night operations as well.

As reported earlier, a 2400 sqm LCA Final Assembly hangar with annexe building has already been established. Also, a state-of-the-art painting facility is operational now.

“This is the first of its kind in the country. It has a wet type downdraft paint booth facility,” adds Sridharan.

Why so much tests are being conducted on drop tanks ?? I thought already most Iaf Aircraft have drop tanks .

Three aircraft per year would mean 7 to 8 aircraft combined per year from two assembly lines. At this rate Tejas Mk1 delivery should be complete by 2019. It means HAL is no where overestimating about being ready for Mk1A by 2020. Arup Raha had been more cautious by terming the induction of Mk1A by 2022 it seems as of now.

That is a big thing . FOC=1A . That is great . Can you have any link for same . As 1A not only involve aesa , in flight refeuling prove , but also structural modification involving air frame and landing grear to reduce weight as well as aerodynamic improvement .

What are the updates on the LCA programme?
The work on LCA Mk1 FOC activities pertaining to integration of weapons and air to air-refueling probe, expansion of envelope is under progress and the FOC is expected by December 2017.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is working on ramping up the production capacity from eight to 16 aircraft per annum. With increased level of outsourcing and enhanced participation of Indian private industry, HAL will be able to speed up the deliveries to cater to the present and future requirements.

The IAF squadron with three aircraft is already operational at Bengaluru since July 2016. It is planned to complete the order for 40 LCA Mk1 by 2019-20.

LCA MK1A is an improved version that incorporates enhanced combat capabilities like AESA radar, Air-to-Air refueling, Self Protection Jammer (SPJ), BVR missile, etc in addition to providing better maintainability features. The process of identification of new systems and their global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is under progress. The development of this version is likely to be completed by the end of 2018. The series production will follow thereafter. Moving over to production of Mk1A from Mk1 is expected to take place seamlessly.


How is the FGFA programme progressing? What are the new timelines in this programme?
The Preliminary Design phase of FGFA is complete. Negotiations for R&D contract between Indian and Russian side is concluded and the final report submitted to the Chairman, Cost Negotiation Committee (CNC) for further processing. The development timeline would be 84 months after the contract is signed.
