Surgical strikes: First official details on how Indian soldiers targeted Pakistani bunkers
By Manu Pubby, ET Bureau | 31 Jan, 2017, 0641 hrs IST

The details confirmed one well-known trait of the Indian Army--its officers lead from the front and get into active combat first, leading a team of soldiers. Another record for a gallantry award winner shows how an officer motivated his outnumbered troops to engage with the enemy.
NEW DELHI: In the first official details oncross-border surgical strikes carried out by Indian special forces last year, the army’s account of the action provides a broader picture of the gallantry of an officer who personally killed four targets in close combat, a sniper who got his targets by sharpshooting into a bunker and a team that inflicted heavy casualties on regularPakistani soldiers.

ET gathered details of the records justifying the gallantry medal winners, through which some of the cross-border action can be stitched together.. While names are being withheld by ET due tosecurity considerations, records show that the top six gallantry winners themselves took down at least 10 targets, mostly in close combat.

The army had read out a statement after the September 29 strikes, saying that heavy casualties had been inflicted at launch pads across the line of control (LoC), but no details were offered.

There has been no official word even on the number of militants killed across the border. But for the first time, official records state that regular Pakistani Army troops suffered casualties in the strike as well. “Enemy intercepts later confirmed destruction of terrorists, massive casualties to terrorists and enemy regulars supporting them,” according to one of the records on qualifying acts of gallantry winners.

While the total death toll would be higher as full details of the operation are not available, records show that two officers were personally responsible for four kills each, including sentries who were taken down in the open.

“(The soldier) along with his buddy closed in and neutralised two sentries in the open… ensured the execution of the task flawlessly with clockwork precision and eliminated four enemy persons in close quarter combat,” the record for one gallantry awardee states.

Another says: “With his decisive thinking, astute resolve and courage beyond call of duty, the officer eliminated four enemy persons and ensured no enemy escaped from the target location.”

The details confirmed one well-known trait of the Indian Army--its officers lead from the front and get into active combat first, leading a team of soldiers. Another record for a gallantry award winner shows how an officer motivated his outnumbered troops to engage with the enemy.

“Despite heavy retaliation by terrorists and enemy regulars, he continued engaging the enemy while motivating his troops to destroy the target,” it says.

“Inspired by his conspicuous gallantry, grit and raw aggression, his men, despite being outnumbered, attacked the enemy with renewed aggression, stunning them into a state of psychological paralysis.”

Of particular interest is the role of a soldier who deliberately ran toward incoming fire to engage the enemy as he realised his comrades were in trouble.

“The experienced (soldier) using his presence of mind and initiative, sensing grave danger and infliction of own casualties, with utter disregard to own safety under intense enemy fire ran down and fired killing two,” the account read.

Exclusive: In Close Combat, A Major Led Team In Surgical Strike, They Killed 4
Written by Vishnu Som | Updated: Jan 30, 2017 20:12 IST

Story Highlights
  • A Major was awarded Kirti Chakra on Republic Day
  • Formed plan for strike based on detailed reconnaissance
  • He 'eliminated 4 enemy persons in close quarter combat': army
New Delhi: Among the 22 soldiers who were honoured on Republic Day for their roles in the surgical strikes against Pakistan, the top award of the Kirti Chakra, the second-highest peacetime decoration, was conferred upon a Major, who killed four people (terrorists and possibly their Pakistani Army handlers, according to sources) in close combat.

The army sources today said that the Major was "the mission leader" of a team assigned to destroy terrorist staging areas across the Line of Control in Kashmir, and that he blueprinted the top-secret operation after a detailed reconnaissance and analysis of data available on the shortlisted targets in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.

"Major (name withheld) along with his buddy closed in and neutralized two sentries in the open," the army said. The Major, who was the commander of a strike team leading the operations from the front, went on to eliminate two other enemies as well.

The surgical strikes were conducted by India on September 29 in retaliation for the deadly attack, weeks earlier, on the Uri army base in Kashmir, where 19 military personnel were killed.

The Major's Kirti Chakra was earned by "warrior ethos, uncanny intelligence gathering skills, devotion beyond the call of duty," said the army.

Details of the surgical strikes have so far been kept totally classified. How many soldiers took part has not been publicly shared. A combination of ground forces and para commandos were involved. Army sources said that the soldiers trekked starting at midnight upto two kilometres into Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. They returned before dawn, after killing dozens of terrorists who were planning strikes in major Indian metros.

Now, army sources, offering some information, said that after the troops "infiltrated" the areas they were to target, meeting or rendezvous points were established where they were to regroup after the operation was completed. "Diversionary tactics" or faking activity in an area to mislead opponents were likely used, they said. After a "commando base" was established, the soldiers broke into pre-assigned groups. One isolated and blocked potential escape points for targets, while also cutting off any routes that could have been used for reinforcements for the terrorists. The other group established a "fire base" from where rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles and mortars and missiles could be used. Typically, this sort of group destroys the target after the assault party or first group has gone in, provides backup for the first group, extricates soldiers who need help or may be cornered, and can turn into an alternate assault group, if that becomes necessary.

The Major was leading an assault party that silently took out enemy sentries and then launched the full-blown assault on the terrorist target. These soldiers took out terrorists and Pakistani Army regular handlers. A total of 10 people were killed by the Major's team, said sources. After that, he directed the fire base to destroy the terrorist launch pad. Members of his team then met at the "rendezvous points" and returned home.

Vishnu Som at it again? What's the point of "withholding" the name of the major and yet laying it out that he was awarded a Kirti chakra and what exactly was he awadred it for.

IA left out citations for a very valid reason, and here we have a presstitute laying it out in full.

Already done. A fone call from Abba US and hapig Sayeed was put under house arrest. Their lizard friend got egg on its face. Hapig and azgar Masood both were protected by their lizard friend in UN and now they themselves have arrested hapig and even azgar will feel the heat. Now what will they do when India once again table resolution to declare them terrorists. Interesting times ahead.

Lizard doesn't care. They'll quietly lick away all the egg and claim that it was never there in the first place. How many times in the past have these two vermin been "house arrested"?

The next time India brings in a resolution, Lizard will react exactly the same way giving some BS reason.
