Disbanded Haryana STF’s chief arrested

Chandigarh: In a major embarrassment for the Haryana government, the chief of its now-disbanded Special Task Force (STF) has been arrested following revelations that the force’s members were involved in dacoity and extortion.

STF chief and ASP Ashok Sheoran’s arrest follows disclosures that STF members allegedly looted Rs 6 lakh from a stockbroker in Panipat on March 11. They also attempted to extort Rs 10 lakh from VK Malhotra, the owner of a jewellery showroom, claiming they were vigilance officers from Chandigarh.

SSP Panipat Rajender Singh had confirmed the involvement of STF officers in dacoity and extortion, saying team member Jagbir Singh — who was with the Panipat police before joining STF — was seen in the CCTV footage obtained from the jeweller’s shop.

Sheoran’s role was also under the scanner ever since the matter came to light. The state government had immediately disbanded the force as a result. The force comprised 20 policemen and was instituted in 2007 to tackle cases of terrorism, Naxalism and other serious crimes.
