Russia Developing Unmanned Next-Generation Fighter – General

Russian designers are proceeding with development of an unmanned "sixth-generation" fighter jet, former Air Force chief Pyotr Deinekin said Monday.

The sixth generation of aircraft will most likely be pilotless. Naturally, we are actively working on this," Deinekin said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Russia will probably not be able to skip a generation and will need to complete all of its fifth-generation projects, he added.

Russia is currently testing its prototype fifth-generation Sukhoi T-50 fighter, a manned aircraft that made its first public appearance two years ago. The US is introducing its F-35, and European powers such as the UK and France have their Typhoon and Rafale fighters in service. All those nations have carried out research into pilotless designs, analysts say.

Deinekin did not specify which design bureaus were working on pilotless sixth-generation designs, but Russian military aircraft maker MiG said in May it was ready to go ahead with a research and development project for an unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) based on its Skat prototype, after signing a deal with the Trade and Industry Ministry earlier that month.

Mikhail Pogosyan, president of United Aircraft Corporation, the holding that unites the Russian aerospace industry, said last November that Sukhoi would focus on creating reconnaissance and strike unmanned air vehicles (UAV) in the near future.

Aviation news weekly Flight International reported in 2011 that Sukhoi and MiG would work together on advanced UCAV programs.

RIA Novosti posted an outdated info.

1 - SKAT is dead.
2 - Mikoyan DB doesn't perform any UCAV projects - it is undergoing rebuild and healing from economical and other deceases of 90-s period.
3 - Sukhoi DB won a contract to build future UCAV and MiG is a secondary subcontractor to that as Yakovlev (Irkut) as well, nothing more.
4 - A new UCAV has codename "Охотник" (The Hunter) and is a joint unmanned platform for AF.
5 - It will not be a fighter, but heavy (up to 20 tons) maneurable strike craft.
6 - It is VERY optimistic to think 6 G fighters will be unmanned because of principal impossibility to create an AI capable of performing autonomous aerial warfare with tactics and general strategy. Pilot will be needed as "expert" brain and "battle manager" loooong time to come :p

If true, then it effectively signs the death warrant of MIG Design Bureau. AFAIK Mikhail Pogosyan, president of United Aircraft Corporation is a former SUKHOI guy.

MiG is nearly dead when it comes to new R&D. All their UCAV research was transferred to Sukhoi a long time ago.

MiG is undergoing its rebirth in a joint OAK structure.
It is not dead or doomed, it will be rescued to develop a light fighters and subcontract to Ilyushin DB in Il-112 and MTA projects.

Yes, LFI light 5g fighter has blinked in the Russian MOD "Menu Table" until Year 2025.
But information is almost no small piece, so we cannot judge this project, speculations only.

However, Russia needs LOTS of heavy fighters and tactical bombers (considering the size of it and the threats list of course), so MiG-35 will be an intermediate LFI until the real one will start to produce.

These are currently paper projects.

If Sukhoi proves it can develop a LFI at a cheaper rate, Sukhoi will take the contract.

Sukhoi is a part of OAK as well.
And Sukhoi has not opened an eternal load of free qualified human resources, so MiG will take proper place in LFI project whether it will be started.
