The entire crew of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from London to Lahore was detained by customs officials in Lahore for six hours for allegedly smuggling 24 iPhones worth about Rs 2.5 million and also foreign currency, the second such incident in a month.

The customs officials at Allama Iqbal International Airport got a tip-off that the crew of PK-758 flight, operated by Captain Amir Hashmi would smuggle a large quantity of high-end cell phones from the U.K.

"The customs authorities took Captain Hashmi and 11 other crew members into custody after 24 iPhones were recovered from the luggage of an air hostess," an official said on Monday.

"The accused are office-bearers of the PIA staff union (CBA) and they did it under a plan. They first managed to get their duties changed by requesting the actual crew members for the flight in connivance with the relevant admin staff," Dawn quoted a senior PIA official as saying.

He said 5,000 pounds were also recovered from the possession of Captain Hashmi.

After detention, the customs officials freed the crew finally on the intervention of Adviser to Prime Minister on Aviation Shujaat Azeem, The Nation reported.

A case was registered against the air hostess from whose luggage the iPhones were recovered.

"Strict action will be taken if any of the PIA employee is found in smuggling of smartphones and other articles," PIA spokesman Mashhood Tajwar said.

In August, the customs authorities recovered 37 smartphones of different brands, three tablets and 5,000 pounds from a crew member of PIA flight PK-786 from London.

Smuggling, thievery and dacoities are quite common. Apart from only a handful of nations, Pakistan is no such exception. It should, however, be a matter of great concern for a nation created on the pretext of Islam as Islam severely condemns and recommends harsh punishments to the culprits of such low activities.

Bad characters are involved in every crime imaginable. I mean cheating, theft etc. So what's wrong with this one? These are only "phones". What about human trafficking?

So do you recommend the punishment of theft in Islam to PIA staff ie. cutting hands?

Really Sir. Shocking indeed. But what good would it do to smuggle heroin from UK into Pakistan? I mean heroin is more cheap in Afghanistan than UK. But jokes apart, it is an unacceptable act. Culprits should be dealt with iron hand.

PIA to be split into two, Gulf airlines may buy core business - Business - DAWN.COM

NEW DELHI: Pakistan plans to split ailing national flag carrier PIA into two companies and sell control of the core business to a global airline over the next 18 months, but political opposition to the sell-off will be intense, the country's privatisation czar said.

Financial advisers are now in talks with several airlines about taking over cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines , which has some 17,000 employees but just 36 aircraft - and 10 of them are grounded due to a lack of spare parts.

Mohammad Zubair told Reuters in an interview during a visit to New Delhi on Wednesday that no decision had been taken on the buyer, but he mentioned Emirates Airline, Etihad and Qatar Airways - the Gulf giants that dominate the regional sector - as possibilities.

"It's going to be the most difficult sale," said Zubair, who is aiming to raise around $4 billion this fiscal year from the sale of stakes in several companies, anticipating demands that the government hold onto PIA and nurse it back to health itself.

"If we are saying that for 25 years PIA has been going from bad to worse, we can't claim that we are business-savvy and we can turn it around," he said. "Anyone who thinks that the government can fund it is living in a fool's paradise."

It is better to privatize PIA than to feed it on public funds. That might be a good way to lessen the burden on public exchequer. These precious funds could be allocated to health, education, tourism or poverty alleviation programs. I am not sure if that could happen under the present corrupt Govt.
