Will Blues end for Bollywood?- Entertainment-Media/Entertainment -News By Industry-News-The Economic Times

Will Blues end for Bollywood?

17 Oct 2009, 1637 hrs IST, Nandini Raghavendra & Leena Mulchandani, ET Bureau

MUMBAI: Even for a Diwali feast, the platter has never been so full of choice—Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, not to forget Kareena Kapoor, a sizzling Lara Dutt and Bipasha Basu and even Katrina Kaif with a special appearance by Kylie Minologue thrown in for the festive spirit. Phew! Three releases and much debate, will they work the box-office magic? Is three, company or competition? With close to Rs 200 crore riding, not a celebratory year so far, a nail-biting climax to 2009 is what everyone is expecting from Bollywood.

Ashtavinayak’s Blue with its huge reported cost of production (COP) of Rs 85 crore was, of course, the high risk one.

Followed by Ajay Devgan’s All the Best, at Rs 40 crore, and Sohail Khan’s Main Aur Mrs Khanna, also at Rs 40 crore. Add print and publicity, which in layman’s terms means ‘hype’ , and the numbers just skyrocket by crores, specially Blue, which is believed to have spent close to Rs 15-18 crore in creating the buzz.

So what are the Friday soothsayers saying? First the plexes, which collectively contribute above 60% of all opening figures. The buzz spend on Blue looks like its worked with a reported 85% opening across screens. While Ajay Devgan has managed to tickle the funny bone of viewers and also got a decent opening of 50%, Salman and Kareena have managed to woo an average 35% as well.

“Since all three films are from different genres , we’ve given them an equal number of shows. Each film has 150 shows across our 76 screens,” says Devang Sampat, senior vicepresident , Cinemax, who agrees Blue’s has worked for now.
Yet, the sweat on the brow is for Blue, with close to Rs 100 crore invested can Dhillin Mehta, chief executive officer of Ashtavinayak Cine Vision recover his money?

For one, IDBI, his bankers who have lent the highest they have to any film (Rs 40 crore) have been given back their money. But the risks all lie with Mr Mehta. His two distributors-PVR who have picked up North and UP and Shemaroo which has picked up International have struck a deal of advance payment.

This means if Blue draws viewers, then whatever their losses they will be paid back by Mr Mehta unlike a minimum guarantee where the risks is shared. Mr Mehta though is not scared. He is, in fact, confident with the response of 1800 print and 2,250 screens cashing in big for him. “Cash flows are not a problem in Diwali and the response has surpassed our initial expectations. All morning shows on Friday have been running to full houses across the country,” says a confident Mehta who had just come out of a meeting with his distributors.

While Mr Mehta’s calculates half his net return from theatrical revenue and also sees a big chunk coming from satellite, the industry opinion is divided, with Blue not really being a satellite audience movie.
Adding all revenues, Mr Mehta’s supporters see his big budget gamble possibly break even with some Luck thrown in, while industry sees at least a Rs 20-25-crore loss.

Shemaroo Entertainment, which holds the international distribution rights for Blue, is making sure they go all out. “For such a big-budget film where the stakes are high you need to go all out which we are doing,” says Hiren Gada, director , Shemaroo.

The film saw a day and date release in over 20 countries and also a Tamil and Telugu release.

For Salman and Ajay meanwhile, the risk factor is less and the genres have been tried and tested. Sohail Khan has already netted in Rs 11 crore from music and home video rights of Main Aur Mrs Khanna. With a decent opening, looks like both All the Best and Main Aur Mrs Khanna will do a decent collection.

'My Name Is Khan' not about terrorism: Karan Johar-News-News & Gossip-Indiatimes Movies

'My Name Is Khan' not about terrorism: Karan Johar
17 Dec, 2009 01:19 pm ISTlIANS

Putting speculations to rest, director-producer Karan Johar said that his forthcoming film "My Name Is Khan", that has Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in main leads, has nothing to do with terrorism.

"'My Name is Khan' has nothing to do with terrorism. It is not a terrorism-based plot at all. It is a humanitarian tale about love and sacrifice," Karan told reporters after unveiling the first look of "My Name Is Khan" at JW Marriot Hotel here Wednesday.

The film's story revolves around Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh) who suffers from Asperger syndrome, a form of autism. Rizwan falls in love with a single mother Mandira (Kajol) who lives in San Francisco. Rizwan is detained by authorities at Los Angeles International Airport, mistaking his disability for "suspicious" behaviour.

"It is about overcoming a phase, it is about triumph of the human spirit," said Karan.

Shah Rukh and Karan's last outing together "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (2006) couldn't spell magic at the box office.

But the superstar seems to be pretty impressed with Karan's work in "My Name Is Khan" and said that the film is the ultimate evolution of the director's work.

"I have worked with Karan in his first film ('Kuch Kuch Hota Hai') and has been with him all through his journey. I think 'My Name Is Khan' is his ultimate evolution," said Shah Rukh.

"In this film, the way Karan has touched upon the scenes and sequences, it is very different from his all previous films," he added.

The film is slated to release Feb 12 next year.

Salman's epic film to break records!

Salman's epic film to break records!
16 Jan, 2010 11:10 am ISTlTNN

Salman Khan won’t have to make much of an effort to take his film Veer, an Eros International Media Ltd presentation and Vijay Galani Moviez production, to international audiences. “The grandeur, budget, sets, its action, writing, the acting, cinematography, and score put it on par with Hollywood films like Gladiator, Troy and Braveheart,” said a trade analyst. Coincidentally, Mel Gibson wrote Braveheart while Salman penned Veer himself !

“Salman is the ideal star to play a warrior; his gravelly voice and impressive physique combine to give him a huge presence. He is larger than life and adds charisma to a vengeance-driven heroic character,” said Galani. Director Anil Sharma without the use of computer effects has given Veer the feel of a classic epic project. “It was shot extensively in Rajasthan where action sequences involving thousands of fighters, horses, hundreds of elephants and camels, including huge sequences such as a train robbery and a full-fledged war were shot. Shootings also took place across the United Kingdom using chariots, vintage costumes, horse carts and items peculiar to the late 19th century. In fact, it’s the first Bollywood film that has been shot in Buckingham Palace,” said a source from the film unit.

Salman took almost 20 years to write this saga of a freedom fighter, a Pindari soldier who fought for social justice and independence. “Rarely does an entertainment house get the opportunity to work with superstars to produce a movie of the grandeur and scale of Veer; which is the magic of storytelling on a large canvas, a story written by the lead star himself. At Eros, we believe this could well kickstart a trend in Indian cinema,” says Managing Director and Group CEO – India, Eros International Media Ltd, A P Parigi, about the film that’s “waiting to break records on January 22”.

Boman's tryst with 'the common man' in 'Well Done Abba'

STAFF WRITER 15:9 HRS IST

Mumbai, Mar 23 (PTI) Bollywood's funnyman Boman Irani, who is playing the lead in Shyam Benegal's 'Well Done Abba', says his character of a common man is very "challenging and real".

The actor, who has made a career out of playing character roles like 'Dr Asthana' and 'Viru Sahastrabuddhi' in films like 'Munnabhai MBBS' and '3 Idiots', plays a lead role for the first time in the movie.

"It is nice to play different kind of characters but I have not played such a simple character. To make exciting to watch was a great challenge. I am happy to play the role of 'Abba'. It is one of my most favourite roles," Boman told PTI.

'Well Done Abba' tells the story of Armaan Ali, a taxi driver in Mumbai, who takes a leave for a month to find a husband for his daughter (Minnisha), living in a small locality close to Hyderabad.

Gaganam(Telugu movie about hijack drama)

Director Radha Mohan has chosen a hijack drama this time, the delicate emotions of passengers of the plane and the delay of bureaucracy in dealing with the terrorists and how the passengers are saved. Read on for Gaganam review.
Story: A flight from Chennai to Delhi gets hijacked within five minutes of its take off from Hyderabad. The hijackers wanted to take the plane to Rawalpindi in Pakistan, but the pilots insist on an emergency landing due to the mistake of one of the hijackers ,who spoiled one of the engines of the plane. So, the plane makes an emergency landing at Tirupati on the grounds of technical snag. However, after its landing, the authorities come to know that the plane is hijacked. Then, the top officials of the government, like secretary to government, police authorities and NSG commandos reach the airport. There are married couple, unmarried youth, elderly people, a politician, an astrologer, a Christian father, and a child who is operated upon for a heart surgery. They are returning to Pakistan. As the trauma continues, one of the passengers gets killed by the hijackers, who demand that the government release a notorious terrorist called Yousuf Khan and Rs 100 crore money. Central Cabinet discusses the issue for about two days even as the trauma of the passengers continues. The NSG chief Ravindra (Nagarjuna) pleads for a commando operation but the authorities refuse. Finally, a decision was taken to release Yousuf Khan. However, while bringing Yousuf Khan to Tirupati, the truck stuck by an avalanche and he dies in that accident. With no option to handover Yousuf Khan, the authorities give permission to Ravindra to take up a commando operation.
Meanwhile, a television scribe (Harshavardhan) with over enthusiasm sneaks into the airport as a police officer and shoots the flight picture. He comes to know that Yousuf Khan met with an accident and calls up the studio and leaks the information. So, the hijackers demand to see Yousuf Khan alive. Then Ravindra uses his mind and brings a film artiste, a director (Brahmanandam) and a make-up man, who recreated a similar scene in a recent film. With the help of the director, he shoots a clipping and transmits to the hijackers that he is alive but is in hospital. What happens next should be seen on-screen.

overall a good performance by nagarjuna and co.Risk is taken by the director with no songs and romance onboard...

THE DOWNFALL

Oliver Hirschbiegel's Oscar-nominated film is set in Hitler's bunker in the dying days of the war and based on the memoirs of his secretary Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara).

Bruno Ganz's portrayal of the dictator shows him as a man at the end of his tether and beyond reason, railing at those he believed have deserted him, ordering non-existent troops to attack the advancing Allies and throwing untrained teenagers and their grandfathers into battle. Equally chilling are the portrayal of Goebbels and his wife (Ulrich Matthes and Corinna Harfouch) calmly killing their children while an almost maddened Eva Braun (Juliane Kohler) literally dances with death. Ganz's performance is superb to the point of unnerving (ironically, he is Swiss) and while there are exterior battle scenes amid the rubble of Berlin, the concentration on the claustrophobic hysteria of the bunker makes for a stunning, gripping film that lingers long in the mind.

Cast: Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara, Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes and Heino Ferch.
Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel.
Production: Constantin Film Produktion GmbH, NDR, WDR, Degeto Film, ORF, EOS Entertainment, Rai Cinemafiction
Distribution: EOS Entertainment
