Yes, very much a possibility. Im thinkin about the Indian SSN programme in design/development stage.

why Big Indian companies are not Investing in such technologies ?

Often a Ship or an Aircraft or even a Vehicle are designed around a specific engine in mind. If it was possible India would have opted for GE engines instead of Ukranian at design stage. Now coming to why Kirloskar or Tata cannot design it? They have to start making Gas turbines first. The only company of whom I have some hope that they would spend some money on R&D in Turbines is Kalyani.

This can be the ONLY justifiable reason, no matter how poorly Russia performs for India they keep getting these "bones" tossed to them. The Ka-226 deal is a prime example- it's not wanted/needed by the IA/IAF, is more expensive than its competitors and it isn't even ordered yet but still the GoI persists with the deal/


+ On the frigates side, the other factor is that between 2013 (INS Trikand) and 2022 (P-17A) there would be no frigates inducted into the IN so these could help mitigate that gap to a great degree.

That said, they are bloody expensive for what they are and massively outclassed by the P-17As in every way.

Navy required new vessels fast but most dock running behind time and these were almost complete and plus they have some good ASW capability and plus there some deals for ToT which can be used for next batch of ships

Nah, this isn't required, the P-17As are fully designed and work will begin before any such ToT would be transfered, there's no need for the ToT for a ship inferior to the P-17A by every metric.

Project 17A is yet to start construction (should start this year) the launch is in 2020 .It will be divided into batch of certain no of ships .The 1st batch will not benifit much from ToT but the 2nd batch will

Yes but specifically, what tech will be useful for the P-17As? As I said, the P-17As would be superior in every way. It would be like saying ToT for a Hindustan Ambasador would be useful when making a La Ferrari.

Doesn't BHEL make Gas Turbines for elect power generation ? There should be expertise there to design and manufacture GTs for other applications. I expect that it is a question of an individual or group taking the initiative and having backing from Gov't / DRDO / Armed forces etc !?

Another reason is that we are getting a good deal. Just like end of season sale on flipkart.
Russia was making these frigates for herself but these could not get completed cuz Ukraine refused to supply the engines. So Russis shelved the plan decided to sell them for a good price. Afaik ships are almost ready and lack only the engines.
So our naval power will get a quick boost this way.

BHEL "makes" gas turbines, just as HAL "makes" turbofans

Why can't India simply build its own ships and just refuse to buy till the ships are indigenous? If others can make it, so can India. It even creates jobs to Indians and circulates money within the economy itself

The only reason to acquire these is time factor. The first P-17a's only arrive in 2022-23.

Waste of time and money, If not our shipyards then better foreign ..
