Javelin missile acquisition from US hits a roadblock | NDTV.com

New Delhi: A proposal to acquire Javelin anti-tank guided missiles from the US has hit a roadblock over transfer of critical technology and reluctance of the American government to participate in the field trials.

India is looking to acquire the third-generation anti-tank guided missiles for modernising its more than 350 Infantry units and provide them the capability to destroy enemy armoured regiments.

The US is not agreeing to provide critical technologies of the missile demanded by India and has also shown reluctance to make available the missiles for being evaluated by Indian experts in the field trials, sources told PTI.

Till the time these issues are sorted out, it would be difficult for the Indian side to proceed further on the deal, they said.

In response, US missile manufacturer Raytheon said, "The Javelin JV stands ready to respond to all requests of the Indian government relating to the evaluation and procurement of the combat-proven missile while ensuring it adheres to a US and Indian governments' agreement."

The Javelin missile is manufactured by a JV of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin but sold to global customers through the US government under the Foreign Military Sales route.

The company said the missile was a superior solution on offer to the Indian Army and was "worth the wait as the two governments continue discussions."

Javelin along with the Israeli Spike missile was planned to be evaluated by India for the requirements of its infantry units.

The deal has been stuck for more than two years as Defence Minister A K Antony had said in August 2010 that a Letter of Request would be sent to the US for procuring these missiles along with Transfer of Technology requirements.

***********************************************

If these Americans are so protective about one anti tank missile what could have been the fate of any American jet if we could have selected for MMRCA.

US always wishes to share critical technologies with India when their leaders come here, now they have shown their real face and intent, as usual no ToT.

US never agreed to a TOT on javelin, and India accepted the deal and now TOT is a problem??
India can do what pakistan does for TOT;instead of china send it to russia and TOT will be available.

How can HELINA be ready if Nag is not ready? HELINA is based on Nag right?? Or the problems are only with NAMICA?

This might help.. we should probably drop this offer & switch to spike instead. Not only will it be cheaper but Israelis don't really have any apprehensions in sharing cutting-edge tech with us (except in some cases) if the price is right.
Not to mention that spike is probably one of the most proliferation anti-armour missile & multiple variants (short|medium|long range), so we might also benefit in the Nag/ Helina programs from the seeker technologies.

If we can build a "fire and forget" seeker for brahmos why can't one be made for NAG?

Neither of them are ready. The IR seeker does not have range past 2.5km to distinguish temp variations and loses the target. The new missile will have a Focal Plane Array made by Sofradir of France that will meet specifications.

The Hindu Business Line : Helicopter version of Nag under way

Missile scientists will also start working on the third generation, `Man Portable' Nag very soon. It would weigh less than 14 kg.
They are already working on Man Portable Nag.

Nag is ready. They changed the GSQR in 2009. Till then all tests were successful, and then we had to make a new version, which failed.

Helina is based off the Nag, but has many differences from it. As of yet, the Helina was tested from surface to surface (not from a helo), and it succesfully hit a target in 2011. It will be used in Rudra and LCH.

That article was 2005.

This is a couple months ago...

In extreme heat, especially in summer afternoons in the desert, the missile cannot pick up targets beyond 2.5 kilometres. Once the temperature cools, the Nag's seeker differentiates again between the target and surrounding objects (or ground clutter)...Since the DRDO's own FPA programme is still at an early stage, the Nag's improved FPA will be supplied by French company, Sofradir. RCI will integrate Sofradir's FPA into an improved Nag seeker.

Indian Army and DRDO co-operate to boost tank-killer Nag missile

Look as far as I know, the problem is with the seeker which is inaccurate at long range in high temperatures. I believe both Nag & HELINA should have a common seeker.

Also, Helina has already been tested from a helo. Search for it and you will find pics as well.
