NEW DELHI: The number of internet users in India is expected to reach 402 million by December 2015, registering a growth of 49% over last year, says a report by industry body IAMAI.
. . About 306 million of these will access internet from their mobile devices, up from 276 million in October this year, according to the report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB.
. . "While internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years from 100 to 200 million, it took only a year to move from 300 to 400 million users. Clearly, internet is mainstream in India today," the report said.
. . This number is expected to further surge to 462 million by June next year as more people come online, especially through their mobile
    devices.
. . The total internet user base stood at over 300 million in December last year, which grew to 375 million by October this year.
. . "Currently, India has the third largest internetnuser base in the world but it is estimated that by December, India will overtake the US (as the second-largest base). China currently leads with more than 600 million internet users," it said.
. . The report said mobile internet user base in urban India has grown 65% over last year to reach 197 million, while the rural user base surged 99% to 80 million by October this year.
. . This is expected to grow to 219 million
(urban) and 87 million (rural), respectively.
. . It also found that of all the internet non-users surveyed in the 35 cities as part of this study, 11.4 million said they are willing to access the internet in the next one year with over two-thirds intending to do so through mobile phones.

India’s internet user base to hit
    402 million, second-highest in
    the world: IAMAI - TOI

World's fastest internet service is on South Korea with an average speed of just 25MBps.
World average is just around 8-12MBps.

World average is 3.9 or 4Mbps. But here we have to think and consider many factors on which the speed of internet is depended on. Geography and number of users in a given area does impact a lot on your bandwidth. In this matter, onus should be given to China. In spite of such a huge area and population, they have been able to provide bandwidth of around 3.8Mbps.
Countries like South Korea and Japan does have a complete fiber network up to the end user, where as we are using copper wires/ coaxial cables or now a days in maximum cases RF. Now all these have limitations and can't deliver high speed connectivity. We too have some high speed connection in some selected places which is totally based on OFC.
But we should be hopeful and thankful too to get featured in 52 position worldwide in 2014 survey, whereas in 2013 we were no where there in list .

Knowing that a "poor" country like India graved his nation in internet speed, he will suicide jumping from that sh*ty cheeni wall.

So China and India's individual internet base is greater than population of any other country. Now we need to monetize this base in as many different forms as possible.

Just make a note that developed countries which boast of 100 Mbps connection to their homes have an average speed of < 10 Mbps.
In India, where more than 60% users are still on < 2 Mbps connection, the average speed is 2 Mbps.
Doesn't that imply India did a good job in this area alone ?

Yes, but those same WhatsApp users could not afford a telephone just two decades back. The devil is in the details ;)

And of course, one kazhak lady I spoke to was amused by the mobile phone penetration here in India - on how even the poorest of poor seem to own mobiles here unlike her country. Seriously, we are on the right track, So long as we don't screw up big time by electing commies, we are golden

I hope the users also upgrade their to current internet connections to current gen or atleast 3G. My dad has a 4G phone and uses a 2G connection :dude:. It like having a 42 inch tv and having SD cable connection :smash:

The price is too high dude. And we are to blame for that. Govt should have given 3G just like 2G without the scams. Putting it for auction was the reason its price is so damn high :(

Some companies have been deliberately throttling 3G data to promote 4G. I use Airtel and it's 2G service seems to be more stable compared to the 3G during work hours.

We should be focussing on wired networks first. This obsession with *G has to go. Having a wifi over a high-speed low latency network is much more preferable.

We are doing something about it, though not enough. I think the only way we can reduce this gap is by opening up the (landline) sector which the govt seems to have no intention of doing

Not really this is India most people are using & will continue to use wireless connections. Especially as most computers built to corporate american standards i.e small heatsink few case fans, are unreliable in the heat.
