India will soon ink defence deals worth around Rs 25,000 crore with Russia, including two mega ones for 42 more Sukhoi-30MKI fighters and 59 additional Mi-17 V5 armed helicopters.

This will reassert Russia's position as India's largest arms supplier despite Israel, France and US now snapping at its heels. But the expected inking of the final design contract for the joint development of a futuristic stealth fifth-generation fighter will not take place during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit here on Monday since it is yet to be fully ironed out, sources said.

This R&D contract is pegged at $11 billion, with India and Russia supposed to chip in with $5.5 billion each. Each 5th Gen fighter - IAF hopes to induct around 200 of them from 2022 onwards - will cost at least $100 million extra. Consequently, as first reported by TOI earlier, India will eventually spend around $35 billion on this gigantic project.

During the meet with Putin, India will seek Russia's firm assurance that INS Vikramaditya, the refurbished 44,570-tonne Admiral Gorshkov for which $2.33 billion has been paid, is not delayed beyond the re-revised November 2013 delivery deadline.

New Delhi had earlier also planned to raise the "technical problems" being faced by its solitary nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra, the Akula-II attack submarine leased from Russia for 10 years at a cost of around $1 billion. "But Moscow has assured the problem will be fixed soon," said a source.

The 42 new Sukhois, to be produced under licence by defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics, will add to the 230 Sukhois earlier contracted from Russia. Having inducted over 170 Sukhois till now, IAF is now progressively basing these "air dominance" fighters both on the western and eastern fronts with Pakistan and China. Overall, the price tag for the 272 Sukhois - three have crashed since induction - stands over $12 billion.

The medium-lift Mi-17 V5 helicopters (59 for IAF and 12 for home ministry/BSF), in turn, will add to the 80 such choppers already being inducted under a $1.34 billion deal inked in 2008.

While India has no plans to acquire more than 272 Sukhois, it has an upgrade plan to convert a bulk of them into 'Super Sukhois' in the years ahead with more advanced avionics, weapons and AESA (active electronically scanned array) radars. "Earlier, the plan was to upgrade 80 of them into 'Super Sukhois' at the cost of around Rs 10,900 crore. Now, the plan is being re-drawn," said the source.

The acquisition of the SU-30MKI is reportedly earmarked for the Strategic forces command and its the super series with reinforced fuselage to carry Brahmos.

Anyway the acquisition of more MI-17 is most welcomed too bad India did not consider licensed production this will be moving to China soon :(

Hal proposal to build 10-14tn medium heli for 3 services is lying with MOD for more than 2 yrs.
~
Hal sought the advice wheather they should go solo or jv. Hal proposed jv with Eurocopter or Russian to speed up the work.
FILE is sleeping with MOD.

it is stipulated that these sukhois will serve under SFC for nuclear delivery- lca or rafale are not supposed to do so when we have bigger and more capable sukhois out there.
su-35 as far as i know is just a level up of basic sukhoi, so india can upgrade and will definitely upgrade( prog to convert sukhoi-30 to super-30) to higher standards. ultimately it should serve purpose.

Are you telling me that India can't produce a chopper equivalent to the Mi-17?

The Super 30s which we are getting dont include AESA radar as it is still in development in India and Russia too . . .
buying super 30s without aesa is not a good decision, hope we do a better deal

The 42 aircraft will be the Super Su-30MKIs.

SFC will never get their own squadron. They have only requested a Rafale squadron for deputation when the need arises. This is the only thing that's known in the media. But it is very obvious it will be true. IAF is not allowing IA medium lift helis, forget about our itty bitty nuclear forces getting the MKI/Rafale for another 50 years. They only recently learned to use Prithvi class missiles. Let them first learn how to handle missiles, then we can talk of them getting fighter jets. Actually IAF is demanding squadrons strength increased from 42 to 45, so IAF has 60 squadrons, Them giving up 2 squadrons is like asking a mother to give up her children. Yeah, right.

The Super 30s which we are getting dont include AESA radar as it is still in development in India and Russia too . . .

Both NIIP and Phazatron are competing with AESA for MKI. AESA is guaranteed. We just don't know which vendor will be chosen.

why can't hal copy the su-30 design and produce our own versions of sukhois with a different name.the chinese have been doing it for years yet the russians are more than happy to sell them their latest su-35(only to be copied by the chinese)?

SU-30MKI are Produced under license at HAL ..

42 SU-30MKI are Super Su-30MKI and they are just not only to carry PJ-10 but AESA, New designed Airframe with more composite inputs, After this purchase all SU-30MKI in IAF will be converted to Super-30 upgrade, Super 30 upgrade is close to PAK-FA 5th gen fighter and needed to counter other 5th generation fighters from other side till PAK-FA / LCA-MK2 / RAFALE F3 are operational in good numbers..
