The simple answer is the current govt is serious about national defence. So it will happen.

@PaliwalWarrior, your point is good. C295 can take 9000kg as per wiki.
I guess a large number of small planes are needed by India due to scattered military bases, factories and ammo depots all over the country. Large planes simplify logistics but India is not designed for simplified logistics.
Lighter aircraft can land and takeoff from shorter less prepared grounds. That's why for example french special forces will continue using C-295 and Hercules instead of A400M.

Good news. This contract will create a real competitor to HAL. Tata will build major aviation manufacturing facility which will be used eventually local designs also.

I always expected GOI to approve the single vendor deal. There is nothing wrong in approving single vendor deals. There are very few manufacturers of military goods and such situation is commonplace.

A decision which should have been taken years before. However very welcome and let us see how Tata's are able to handle the local production. Can they use this to build more models in India for export partnering Airbus.

Indian MoD clears deals for indigenous license-build of M777 guns, the Tata- Airbus Avro- replacement bid & 200 Ka-226T light helos.
Good luck getting Ka-226T with an EU arms embargo. With the loss of Motor Sich engines Russia's own helicopter industry has come to a screeching halt.

ahem... The Ka 226 uses French Turbomecca engines ..!! so Embargo means.. How it can fly.. will French allow direct sale of those Engines to India

There is no problem with a direct sale but Safran must have a separate deal. They cannot work with the Russians.

Since Kamovs are supposed to be "Made in India", Safran should not have a problem dealing with an Indian company.

Safran would have no problem selling 400+ engines to Satan himself as long as he comes with cash. It is the sanctions they would face that would make it not worth their while. The EU commission will not care if it is labelled "Make in India" if Safran has to collaborate with Kamov in order to complete it.

Fair enough. I am sure "they" can find a way around it.

Question: Is it the new C295W Version which Tata will be assembling? A comparison with An 32 would be interesting. Because uprated C295W could very well replace AN32 along with AVRO. Which means order size would increase down the line. Congrats to Europe! After Rafale , C295 is another big win for their economy! Pity its coming from a S.D.R.E "Facist Hindu" party led govt against they spat so much venom all these years, and not from 100% "Secular" Sonia.

The only way around it is if the helicopters are civilian products, or if India and Safran sign an exclusive deal cutting out the Russians. The other alternative is to dump Kamov and go with the Airbus option.

Don't think that's gonna happen. Russians can manage a small turboshaft engine. Not exactly "state of the art" tech when compared to their capabilities.

Russians can't even make their own helicopter engines as they left that all in Ukraine.

if it has problems in Engine procurement, I sure CCS or Fin Min cancel the deal, and go for new one.

I feel the Ka 226 may be comes with Indian Shakthi Engines. otherwise India may opt French for direct purchase of Turbomecca Engines .!!

One should remember Ka 226 reported as

Service ceiling: 6200 m (20300 ft)
Hover ceiling: 2500 m (8200 ft)

Where Siachin situated at 5,400 m ( 17500 ft)

I think the only item where Ukraine supplies is becoming a problem is ship turbine. Russia is working on a crash program to replace Ukrainian origin ship turbines. Helicopter engine is not sourced from Ukraine.

Kamov helicopter made in India may have French engines.
