The expert comittee on Railway modernisation did an extensive job in idenitfying priority areas. And high speed rail between Mumbai and Ahmedabad with speeds of 350kmph is one of them."¨"¨Other priority areas include ICT, safety, signalling upgrades e.t.c."¨"¨http://www.prsindia.org/administrat...ummary - Pitroda on Railway Modernization.pdf
"¨"¨"©Ahmedabad-Mumbai route is the busiest and maintained route in India.Because many Gujjus live in mumbai since ages, so business and family trips both are the root causes and now A'bad is also developing as a business hub.Interlinking 2 business hub by superfast trains is essential for country like India.Delhi-A'bad-Mumbai-Pune corridor should be priority for new development."©I was hoping any announcement regarding this concept in recent budget but unfortunately got nothing. :(

distance : 1300 km"¨"¨air fare in india : Rs 4100"¨TRain fare HST : Rs 7000-9000"¨"¨time air : 2 hrs"¨train : 4 hr 30 mins"¨"¨Even you can search online.
"¨"¨"©You're forgetting the boarding, checking, etc. time in air travelling. And 1 more thing air prices are mostely subsidized, I think train fares would be subsidized,too.1st of all, you can't predict Indian situation by just comparing with china's.Fast trains are essential in some corridors.I would be glad if govt. even just announce the project officially.

Mumbai, May 15: The ambitious high speed corridor project of Kerala government will commence next year, according to Kerala chief minister Ooman Chandy. The 1.20 Lac crore project will have 80% private funding through loans, and remaining amount will be invested by state and central government jointly, he stated.

Chandy was in Mumbai for a road-show to showcase the forthcoming 'Emerging Kerala 2012' global investor meet, which would be held from September 12 to 14 in Kochi.

The first phase of the project will be completed in 2018 when Thiruvananthapuram - Cochin route for high speed rail is ready.

Though the initial plan was to establish high speed rail project only up to Cochin - Kasargod, later it was decided to extend Mangalore and Udupi. In 2020, high speed corridor high speed project will be completed with Thiruvananthapuram - Udupi route.

Currently 634 km Thiruvananthapuram -Udupi route is travelled by train for about 15 hours, but high speed rail will enable passengers to complete this route within three to four hours.

Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation chief T Balakrishnan said that high speed rail facility is available in Japan and China for years, we would initially introduce 200km per hour speed rails here. He said that, in Japan high speed rails run for 350 km per hour.

Work on Kerala high-speed rail to begin by next April: Chandy

PTI | 10:05 PM,May 14,2012

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said work on the state's ambitious high speed rail corridor project, involving an investment of a whopping Rs 1.18 trillion, will begin from April next year. The first phase of the project, connecting the state capital with Kochi, will be hopefully be over by March 2018, he said. "We are hopeful of beginning construction work on this big-ticket project by April 2013 and the first phase, linking political capital Thiruvananthapuram with the commercial hub Kochi will be over by March 2018.

This stretch will cost around Rs 40,000 crore, excluding the land cost, which comes at a big premium in the state," Chandy told reporters here. He was here to launch the roadshow to showcase the forthcoming 'Emerging Kerala 2012' global investor meet. The biennial Emerging Kerala 2012, to be held from September 12 to 14 in Kochi, seeks to review Kerala's hugely successful social development model to see how it can be leveraged to achieve sustainable economic growth. The second phase of the Rs 1.18-trillion high speed rail corridor will connect Kochi with Udupi in Karnataka and is expected to be over by March 2020, Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation chairman and managing director T Balakrishnan said.

The project will be equally owned by the state and the Centre, Balakrishnan said, adding that the Mangalore-Udupi sector will be owned by Karnataka and the Centre. When asked about the funding, Chandy told PTI that 80 per cent of cost will be debt-funded and he is keen on getting Japanese developmental fund under the JICA (Japanese International Cooperation Agency) soft loan route. On whether he is open to parting some equity with the Japanese in the project for which Japanese technology will be used, Chandy said, "A call on that will have to be taken at the policy level. As of now, it will be a 50:50 venture between the state and the Centre."

Japanese Bullet Train coming to India

TOKYO: India is seen set to use Japanese bullet train technology for a high-speed connection between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, a report said on Wednesday, the centrepiece of a huge package of infrastructure sales.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh will issue a joint statement at a summit later in the day giving details on a feasibility study for the railway, the Nikkei newspaper said.Abe is to offer a sweetener in the form of 101.7 billion yen ($1.0 billion) in yen-based loans to India, the Nikkei said, as Tokyo fights off competition from nations such as France, which has the TGV high-speed rail network.

Japan under Abe is embarking on a renewed drive to sell roads, rail and power stations to emerging nations, including India, in a bid to offset lassitude in the domestic economy that has left it treading water.Earlier this month Abe pledged he would travel the world on behalf of Japan Inc and said he wanted to treble sales of Japan's well-respected infrastructure projects to 30 trillion yen a year.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail line would stretch 500 kilometres (312 miles) at a cost of up to one trillion yen, the Nikkei said, adding the two governments plan to finish technological reviews and costings by March 2014.Abe was also expected to offer around 17.7 billion yen to India to build a conference hall and other facilities at the Indian Institute of Technology in Hyderabad, along with around 13 billion yen for the Tamil Nadu state government, the Nikkei said. The pledges will come on top of a March offer of a 71 billion yen loan towards the construction of an underground rail network in Mumbai.

Japanese media have said the two sides will agree on drafting a master plan for new infrastructure in southern India, which could see Japanese know-how used to build a power grid, roads, railways and ports around Bangalore and Chennai.
The sales boom comes as the two countries â€" both democracies â€" eye the rise of China with increasing unease as Beijing presses territorial claims with growing insistence.

Singh on Tuesday called for the shoring up of military and security ties, Kyodo News said, stressing the commonalities between Tokyo and Delhi.
"We should intensify our political dialogue and expand our strategic consultations on... issues of mutual interest," Singh said in a speech, adding that defence and security dialogue, military exercises and defence technology collaboration should also grow between the two countries, according to Kyodo.Singh stressed that Japan is the only country with which India has held a "two-plus-two" meeting of foreign and defence ministers, Kyodo said.

Media reports earlier this week said Japan was expected to sell amphibious planes to India in what would be the first sale of hardware used by the Japanese military since a weapons export ban was imposed in the 1960s.

What about North-South routes; are they economically feasible?

In my opinion, extremely long routes on a high speed railway are not economically feasible. The costs become prohibitive, and people would much rather fly. The best routes would be sectors like Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Bangalore, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Agra (just tourist traffic will keep this afloat).

Most of the routes in this map are not feasible economically, IMO - but let us wait and watch.

Thx to goi for neglecting ne once again
You really can't build HSR in North East due to geography. We hope to get good normal road and rail links to the region so that the economy gets a boost.

You forgot the Jats asking for OBC quotas... they love to block rail lines along with their cattle.
The gujjar blockade was much bigger, pervasive and more widespread but was not covered in media thanks to Jaat and Meena pressure.

If bullet trains do come, we can witness a real estate and economic revolution.

Imagine being able to board a train 250 km from Delhi, say in Chandigarh and then be able to hit Delhi Downtown in an hour.
