BEIJING, Jan 6 – Myanmar’s growing rapport with Japan, Western nations and India could influence Sino-Myanmar relations and put pressure on China’s “strategic space” in the southeast Asian nation, Chinese state media said today, reports PTI.
“The growing rapport between Myanmar and the West could influence Sino-Myanmar relations and put pressure on China’s strategic space”, a write-up in the official daily Global Times said.
It noted that Japanese Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso pledged debt relief of USD 5.74 billion and a fresh loan of 50 billion yen during his ongoing Myanmar visit, an attempt interpreted as targeting China, the article said.
“In addition, the Indian Defence Minister A K Antony will head for Naypyitaw later this month to “boost bilateralmilitary cooperation and counter China’s deep strategic inroads there,” thearticle said.
“Myanmar is certainly undergoing changes. Some analysts hold that China’s backyard is on fire and an anti-China front is gradually being shaped in Myanmar. This exaggerates the impactof these changes and underestimates the strength of the Sino-Myanmar relationship”, it said.

There is no doubt that India - Myanmar relationship are in up swing... It has been under development for some years now...

India should consider exploring a rail link to South Asian countries like Thailand, Laos & Vietnam for better economic activity..

Myanmar have to be less dependent on China and Japan. India & USA have to play a major role in reducing this dependency on China...

China is not worried about Indian warming up with Myanmar.

What will be of serious concern is the West's influence overwhelming Myanmar to the detriment of the Sino Myanmar friendship of ages.

If Myanmar comes into the West's sphere of influence, China would have to worry seriously since it could lead to the loss or restricted access to the Indian Ocean that she has currently through Myanmar.

    Sir,

India is working very closely with the western nations specially Japan, USA to bring back Myanmar from the clutches of China.

Myanmar has also become to appreciate India's security concerns lately.

I believe that the situation is already on a slippery slope as far as Sino-Burma relations are concerned, especially after last year's royal snub to Chinese attempts to construct a dam worth about $3-4 billion, which was no doubted prodded by the US led West as they began a reapproachment with the isolated country.
But we should be weary off reading too much into these statements coming from China and Myanmar, the defense relations between the two countries are still very strong, and also is the fact that the Myanmar army needs the Chinese to contain the rebels.
What would be significant and of real worry/nightmare to the Chinese is if the Myanmarese authorities cancel the lease of Coco islands to the Chinese, this would mean a massive shift in the corridors of power, one I'm not sure the Myanmarese are ready for, just yet.

India has always pussyfooted in doing anything substantial in influencing any peripheral country.

It has always been ambiguous. If it were not so then Myanmar, SL or even postage stamp size Maldives would not come within the Chinese embrace.

India enjoys its masochist existence of being 'Goody Two Shoes".

We only surface riding someone else's bandwagon and then quickly get off when the ride becomes bumpy.

Hardly a way to be even a regional power, let alone a superpower, which in any case, is a term of the West to massage Indian ego and gain access to the vast Indian market and influence its economy.
