if you consider the shoe string budget(compare to other coutries) and the time period on in which it was achived, not to forget all sanctions from some countries for the basic tech, it is super achivement for us. Hats off to all those who worked on this.

India tests ballistic missile shield, to deploy over Delhi-NCR soon

Balasore: India on Friday successfully tested its indigenously developed ballistic missile shield off the coast of Odisha and said it is readying to deploy the system in the National Capital Region for protection against hostile missiles. As part of the exercise, it test-fired a supersonic interceptor missile which destroyed a 'hostile' ballistic missile off the Odisha coast.

"At around 1252 hours, the interceptor hit the target missile successfully at an altitude of 14.5 kilometres," DRDO spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta said. India is working towards development of a multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence system. "We are ready to deploy the system in the NCR region by 2014," DRDO's scientist and Director of the Missile Defence Programme Avinash Chander said.

The 'hostile' ballistic missile, a modified surface-to-surface 'Prithvi', mimicking an incoming enemy weapon, first lifted off from a mobile launcher at around 12.52 hours from the launch complex-3 of integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-Sea, about 15 kms from Balasore.

Within about four minutes, the interceptor, Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile positioned at Wheeler Island, about 70 km from Chandipur, after getting signals from tracking radars, roared through its trajectory to destroy the incoming missile mid-air in an "endo-atmospheric" altitude, defence sources said. Gupta said a simulated test was also done on Friday to check the system and it was also successful.

In Friday's test, the hostile missile was simulated to be a ballistic missile fired from the range of 1,500 kms, he said. The interceptor missile is a 7.5-metre-long single-stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator, the sources said.

The interceptor missile had its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities, besides sophisticated radars, they added.

It seems at both. There were multiple targets and multiple interceptors set loose on them.
I think they had two objectives (at the least). one was achieved by the hit at 15kms altitude and the other at 120kms.

Re: DRDO to conduct eighth ballistic interceptor missile test this mon

not good place to discuss this, but what will happen if NSAR with nukes, i doubt it can carry one is fired and we intercept it and their nuke goes waste and radio active marteial is scattered how small area it may, what will be our response ???
Wondered why we need iron dome ? with such long border..

my guess

to protect the recently opened forward bases close to border from future guided artillery and to neutralize the NASR threat.

cool stuff, it was hit to kill and you can see primary explosion from AAD warhead and then secondary explosions of enemy warhead.

loved it

in the first video link you provided the missile infra red image was observed, but whats the thing light violet/blue around the missile and its increasing ?

as far as i know till today india doesn't have hit to kill missile, am very happy to see our first effort.thanks a lot for india scientists who are successful in thier first attempt even with limited resources.
congratulations to drdo once again

I believe it is for mobile armoured columns. I am not sure it can be used to counter nasr,it warhead is small. For that we have to depend on Akash. Wiki says it cost US$90,000 per missile.

Re: DRDO to conduct eighth ballistic interceptor missile test this mon

Indian Defense planners were keeping a close watch on the performance of the Iron Dome during the 2012 Operation Pillar of Defense. The Iron Dome, according to reports, intercepted 87% of the Fajr V rockets fired at Israel by the Hamas. Several months ago, the military scientists in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had suggested that India look at a joint development programme with Israeli firms to develop an Indian version of Iron Dome, which is touted as the most effective system against short-range missiles such as Fajr V rockets. The Indian scientists believe Israel's plight has several parallels to its threat from Pakistan as well as the vulnerability of its cities from terrorists. Unlike ballistic missiles, against which DRDO claims to have a fairly good anti-ballistic missile shield, there is almost no protection against short-range rockets or artillery fire. DRDO is currently collaborating with Israeli firms to develop medium range surface to air missiles (MRSAMs) and LRSAMs. However, Iron Dome is in a different class all together, Israeli diplomatic sources here argue.
One of the reasons why some Indian defence planners is pushing for it is the possibility of another conflict with Pakistan, where a system like the Iron Dome might be useful to deter even conventional artillery attacks. In addition, Pakistan has developed a tactical nuclear weapon like the Nasr, which is a solid fuelled battlefield range ballistic missile. While Pakistani analysts say this was developed in anticipation of India's supposed Cold Start doctrine, some Indian sources say the Iron Dome might be an effective deterrent against this new weapon. According to sources, there have been some discussions between DRDO and their Israeli counterparts for a possible joint development of Iron Dome for India. "The Israeli team comes and works in our laboratories. Our team goes and works in their laboratories and industries. There is a learning that is taking place which was not there when we buy things and integrate with existing products... In directed energy weapons — we are focusing on fibre laser, high powered micro-waves, etc. We have also started discussions with Iron Dome for co-development (in India)," Dr W Selvamurthy, Chief Controller looking after international cooperation, told The Economic Times recently.[85]
