PLAAF officially removed from service Fighter J-6 - similar to the MiG-19

BEIJING, June 12 - RIA Novosti, Vasily Kashin. Air Force People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Saturday held a formal ceremony to bid farewell to the latest fighter J-6 - issued in China under license from copies of the Soviet MiG-19, whose production in the Soviet Union was discontinued in 1957.

Channel CCTV-"Sinven" showed the funeral of the latest fighter J-6. Now the most famous and massive Chinese military aircraft no longer is in service with the Chinese Air Force.

MiG-19 was adopted by the Soviet Air Force in 1955, but in the end of 1950 in connection with the Adopt the MiG-21 and Su-9 production of this fighter was discontinued. Latest MiG-19 in Soviet air defenses had disappeared before the start of 1970. Elsewhere, however, the fate of the aircraft was much more successful - a lot of MiG-19 was built in Czechoslovakia and China.

During the 1960-1980-s J-6 (the name was the MiG-19 in China) was the main combat aircraft of the PLA and the most famous product of the Chinese aviation industry. From 1961 to 1986 in China was made around 4000 of these aircraft. They formed the basis of the combat power of the Chinese aviation until the second half of 1990, widely exported to other developing countries, and participated in several conflicts including the war in Vietnam.

In the 1990's, China began its rapid modernization of its own air force, which resulted in displacement of J-6 with more modern fighters. Now on Air Force and naval air forces of China are the fighters of the Russian and Chinese production of Su-27, Su-30, analogs of the MiG-21 J-7 and J-8II, created by Russian designers of the J-10 and J-11 ( version of the Su-27).

They have finally realized it is the 21st century =xy

Now they only have to get rid of their MiG-19 attack clones (A-5 fantan) and MiG-21 clones (J-7). That would eliminate most of PLAAF =xD

I know, I thought they retired these junks 5 years ago. It must be part of the downsizing so they can say they have more modern equipment, when in reality, they are just downsizing.

was checking their numbers, they have the following as what we would call good fighters by todays standard no matter how good or bad the J10s and 11s compare with others. Rest are making up the numbers of their vastly quantity air force.

    80 J-10s
    69 Su27
    73 Su 30MKK
    100 J-11

    120 J-10s
    69 Su-27SK (13) UB
    72 Su-30MKK
    24 Su-30MK2

    J-11 is the Su-27SK
Apparently there are 24-28 J-11Bs without engines

so they have just about 350 what we would call front line fighters. That is not too frightening.

Yusuf remember the PLA is esentially a an artillery army with the object of its airforce being air denial.I don't see the PLA giving more emphasis to the PLAAF as much as it gives to the army

Oh it sure is trying to up its air force with J10s and 11s and also working on the Jxx program. They very well know that they need a strong air force to be counted as a force to reckon with on a global scale that they aspire to be in.

yusuf before aspiring that way you must look at the immediate neighbourhood none of its neighbours are banana republics nor the CCP has warm relations with none exactly. The Chinese are damned by their location on the map to be precise.Just look at the US neighbourhood and the Chinese neighbourhood. The Chinese were nowhere near USSR(they had an airforce the Chinese could only dream of)yet they never were able to reach the US in their birds. Its the same the Chinese are damned by their location

these would be finally gone into Target drone for Advanced fighters.

These fighters in NK and Iran would be used for target practice of US fighters in case of War.

Wonder if these F6 have been upgraded regularly like India did with its MiG 21s that has made it a potent fighter even today??

generally USSR and VPAF pilots are quoted as prefering the MiG-21(Faster) or MiG-17 (More agile) to the J-6. What did the Chinese see in a jet that the USSR didnt? Wasnt like they couldnt produce more advanced copies of Jets - like the J/F-7 even. even Israeli pilots accounts for saying that MiG-19s were poor jets and easy targets - although i suspect the Arab pilots had something to do with this

Is this a good time to be retiring these planes?? Russia is not giving anymore planes and the Chinese indigenous engines are all flops ,and Russia is not giving anymore engines. Looks like Chinese dreams of exporting warplanes is also coming to an end.

You cannot compare those junks with MIG 21. Mig 21 is a lot better plane then those .

the original news in Chinese saying those retired recently are trainers not fighters, because the new trainers have been delivered which is JJ-9, the figters retired long time ago.
P.S, glad to know from indian or french that China has only 330 front line 4G fighters
