No doubt about that, but the issue is the cost difference between IOC and FOC, for the same numbers, but at more than twice the costs. Either FOC got upgraded with so many costly stuff that the costs jumped that much, or IOC was so basic, that the low costs was deceiving.
FOC with pulse dipper radar and basic multi role capabilities at 47 million could of course get lower with economy of scale too, but as we know the plan is to move on to MK1A at even higher costs with AESA radar and new EW system. It will be interesting to see where the MK1A cost starts.
Cost Difference or price rise is due to fact that earlier LCA were being assembled by hands (which was also the reason for every LCA being unique and maintenance nightmare), with same old infrastructure but now HAL has invested money into entire new automated plants and CNC machines to make parts common and interchangeable plus private vendors like VEM, L&T too have invested money which they will recover through profits. Add to it (my gut feeling) LCA Tejas too may sport AESA 2052 instead of pulse Doppler radar (since we are already installing it on Jaguars) and a basic EW will be part of FOC that may also be the reason it is taking so long for FOC..........

FOC has nothing to do with MK1A upgrades, but with certifying A2A capability (gun, python V, Derby, flight envelope expansion), as well as the new nose refuelling probe. Basically the minimum requirements to replace Mig 21s in A2A roles. That's why FOC is the key milestone for the programme and why MK1A is dependent on it, because MK1A adds modernisations on the FOC base. And since no AESA and EW has been selected so far, the FOC costs also can't include them.

#TejasUpdate #7 | SP5 from the 2nd production facility of #HAL (erstwhile Kiran hangar) is ready to kiss the skies. It has completed HSTT & 1st flight likely this week. SP7 finishes contract flying and awaits a letter from #IAF HQ for customer flying. | @akananth | #DNKT | #Tejas

Squadron strength reaches to 7 by February with one Tejas each in January and February.........Where are those critiques of HAL?

Others are realizing that building the HAL Tejas in large numbers is the only realistic option to rebuild and/or enhance squadron strength and grow the domestic aerospace industry. It is also an admission that the single-engine tender will not really take off.

I always knew this single engine option will never be persuaded beyond RFI.

This deal was never what it looked like -- just a deal to fill numbers in IAF quickly. F-16 was always too old and Gripen E was always too American. In fact, as I suspect GOI used it as a tool to test the extent of US's willingness while cooperating with us.

We must hand over Tejas production to tata, mahindra or kalyani.
IMHO, for Tejas it's not required.

As HAL is already outsourcing 75% to different vendors.

It can't be serve on plate to private companies like that. TATAs, Mahindras need to come out and show the intend like L&T, VEM ets are doing this.. step by step.

Only after establishing a mechanism where vendors across the country are streamlined to supply for the current set of tejas orders.. it would be very difficult even for Tata or Mahindra to institute a supply chain mechanism of vendors who are spread across the country. Its a whole new ball game for them .. yes Su 30MkI sources its spares from state owned companies and Russia. Here for Tejas its different Ecosystem is being created for a robust aero industrial complex. It would be great if HAL establishes a rigourous network of supply chain .. only then it can institute a big private firm to encash this .. for private firms to build we need more orders than what we now have.

Since we may not be procuring much-hyped single-engine jets anymore(fingers crossed). It makes sense to outsource at least one final assembly line of MK-1A to any in private sector under SP clause. Later using that to speed up production of MK-2 -- whose orders should be in excess of 120-- and also to produce AMCA once it is ready. The private sector needs some hand holding, experience and maturity before it is handed over production of AMCA.

Tejas MK1-A is HAL product.

They took MK1 from ADA and proposed MKA1-A, It's their baby.

HAL is doing hand holding to their partner who are actually Pvt Companies only - LnT, VEM etc

I know about tier-1 manufacturers. But my point is about transferring an entire final assembly line to a private sector company for creation of more companies beyond HAL and PSUs. Which is what government is planning with its SP model.

If Tejas MK-1A is ordered in greater quantity then GOI shall give its production to likes of TATA or any.

This one idea of getting an company beyond HAL for aircraft production should not change even if SEF is discarded in its present avatar and Tejas takes its place.

Completely Agree.

But what I am saying is, those so called Pvt Companies with big pocket - TATAs, Mahindras, Adani, Relaince needs to show intent.

Since, they are Zero in Aircraft manufacturing, they need to learn.. and there is no better way than starting as a support tier1-2-3 companies for HAL even for MK1-A. Get all what comes you way and take it forward.

I like the way LnT is doing here.

Dynamatic Technologies Limited is making Front Fuselage

Dynamatic Technologies Limited has been chosen as the supplier for the Front Fuselage assembly from HAL - Light Combat Aircraft Division

HAL's LIGHT COMBAT AIRCRAFT (LCA) project is a long term contract for Dynamatic, which includes manufacturing of detail parts & Assemblies along with the jigs & fixture requirements.

Dynamatic is already a single source for the HAL's Sukhoi program on the major control surfaces. With the HAL-LCA program, Dynamatic will be providing expertise on the Fuselage as well.
