I do 3D&2D myself so this is mainly aimed at the people who don't understand process and also to show few interesting models...hope that you'll enjoy it.:)

We can see them all the time from old models to newest not yet seen.
They can be made out of material (mock up) to the "artistic" presentation, example; PAK FGFA, JXX etc. in 3D and (or) 2D(often called "Photoshop")

    EXAMPLES;

    3D

This is starting point for the 3D modeling - blueprint - precise 2D line drawing
(also photos are necessary to ad note of realism on existing equipment)

    3D program (before 3D rendering)

When the plane is rendered in 3D program it is often composited in Photoshop with the background and additional effects are added (like glow, blur etc.)

note the presence of the glow effect on the windows to ad note of realism
    [IMG]

3D "wire" visualization of finished 3D model

3D rendering of the same (no Photoshop intervention on image)

    MOCK UP MODEL

Blueprints & photos are used as starting point of creation.

mock up model of WW2 German "Tiger"(models like these have been used in movies also but now are replaced by 3D be cause cheaper)

3D rendering of the plane (not necessarily Photoshop-ed, all can be created in 3D) with probably aerial photo of real ships (to small to be verified by eye) in background to give note of realism

    Comparison

3D but with basic color with no details, without dirt, dust, rust or scratches to add realism

Final 3D renderings gathered together & composited in Photoshop or some other adequate 2D program

This is quality that is very close to movie production high quality professional 3D
(pilots are bad quality but it's helicopter I'm talking about)

These (with basic color material) are test rendering for verification of model, light, shadows etc.
or deliberately monochrome (to more easily present details if necessary)

Final test render of materials befor putting colors & textures and all necessary details to acheive
    photo realism

Jakojako777 3D rendering of the scene.
These renderings are truly brilliant. Thanks for posting them.
    A couple questions

How did you merge the sky with the Land or Sea(horizon)? making it out of focus.

How many hours it took to model the Su30?

Is it easier to model in 3ds max or Maya?

    A fantastic Job.

    Just to clarify things
I did 3D&2D (and am still doing it) but I have no military models on my own
I just post this kind of examples examples (that logically only on military subject).
I did that be cause people often post images of PAK/FGFA here on IDF without knowing how exactly they are made
So you can call it educational purpose if you like....... but it is interesting & FUN also !

    Now questions

How did you merge the sky with the Land or Sea(horizon)? making it out of focus.

Use plug in that is called blur but not just about any use LENS blur for out of focus and directional blur for illusion of motion you have it in Photoshop
(so you don't have to know 3D for simple scenes all can be done in 2D)

How many hours it took to model the Su30?

Well depends if pilot seat and instrument board and "everything inside" has ALL details of high resolution PHOTO quality than it can take days even few weeks depends on level of detail and PRECISION.

Production model (REAL MEASUREMENTS that can go in 0,00 precision can take one month) but than you would have every tiny detail with microscopic precision for production!
Normally it is never done by only one person but at least few people .When they finish their part than they give to head modeler to put it together in FINAL stage (with watchful eye of engineers) !
Imagine just engines with MILLIONS of parts and all with microscopic precision!
EVERY PART has its number, color, name and measurements in specs joined with
    computer specific code name.
Those models once they are made must be VERIFIED several times before going into production.
Let me know when you want to start LoL!:)

Is it easier to model in 3ds max or Maya?

Go with the Max it is easier on the beginners.

This is my 3D model & rendering (others are not) but it is at least 4-5 years old
I have nothing else on the military subject for the moment (even that one is not finished) :)
I just did some test renderings of different materials on unfinished model and this is one of the pictures.
My other 2D&3D stuff is not from military domain.....
