India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

@WolfPack86, interesting video. I think the term "Air Defence" is not accurate to represent the role of the Tupolev-22M3. It is more of a strategic bomber.

It is there in the Russian Involvement in Syria thread. I have to do a lot of sifting to find it.

India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

No man, I don't think they will ever give out the cream of their crop. Remember how two Russian pilots were killed when their Mil-24/35 crashed or was shot down? They were testing an export version when they were called to aid with air-strikes. If it was the Russian version, it would have had...

I suppose you meant Tupolev-22M3? Russia will not sell their Tupolev-160. Coming to CISMOA, I am am not at all in favour of being too cosy with the US.

Tupolev-22 was designed and was very difficult to operate. Tupolev-22M was redesigned from scratch. Tupolev kept the number 22 only to convince the government that it was just an iteration of the existing Tupolev-22, but in reality, it was not. Now, Tupolev-22M(1/2/3) were minor modifications...

That is not the Tupolev-22M3. That is the Tupolev-160. It is Russia's jewel in the crown, They will not give that to anyone. Both are swing-wing aircrafts and have a similar looking cockpit and tail. Tupolev-22M3: Tupolev-160:

India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

Let's say a PLAAF bomber flies over Nepal and attacks an Indian city. In such a case, India will have casus belli to send in its military into Nepal because the attack happened from Nepalese airspace. While we are talking about Tupolev-22M3, let me bring in an older Tupolev, the Tupolev-4...

India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

I think the Tupolev-22M3 can be used as a bomb truck, or, to be precise, a cruise missile truck. It is supposed to be a triad completing entity. It is supposed to be used as a doomsday weapon. It will go in at blistering speed, unload all its cruise missiles, and then return back to its base...

We cannot without their permission. The Russian bombers are flying to Syria via Iran and Iraq, and avoiding Armenia, Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Similarly, the Russian cruise missiles launched from the Caspian Fleet also avoid these countries. If a country allows transit to military...

We cannot make or design anything matching either the S-400 or the Tupolev-22M3 in India anytime soon.

India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

We have speculated on this long time back. It is an unconfirmed news, so it might as well be speculation. The recent performance of the Russian Tupolev-22M3 and Tupolev-160 in Syria will certainly make these planes attractive to anyone willing to pay for them. Now, Russia is not likely to sell...

What about re-entry vehicles? They also serve a space purpose. Every rocket has dual civilian and military application; so do all kinds of space vehicles and shuttles.

    Unrealistic. Here is why: MiG-29K: Length: 17.3 m (57.76 ft) Wingspan: 11.99 m (39.34 ft) Tupolev-22M: Length: 42.4 m (139 ft 4 in) Wingspan: Spread (20° sweep): 34.28 m (112 ft 6 in); Swept (65° sweep): 23.30 m (76 ft 6 in)) Tupolev-22M is much bigger than MiG-29K and cannot be part of a...

Regarding long-range bombers, I think keeping in mind the large territorial expanse of PRC, why not? We could always base some in Andamans or far away from Indo-Tibetan border so that we can use them if conflict breaks out. Personally, I like the idea.

India likely to acquire Tu-22M3 Supersonic Bombers

Tupolev-22M is a fine aircraft. India could invest in that. Tupolev-160 is still better, but Russia probably won't want to offer that. Anyone has any idea how much these two birds cost each?
