There is a JV between Safran and Sukhoi for Superjet 100 aircraft engine called SAM146. Safran builds the hot part of the engine while Russians build rest of the engine. Obviously Safran did not want to give their tech to Russians. Although this engine is high performance, it suffered from large...

    Kaveri Engine

Boss aero engine tech is the most fiercely guarded industrial secret. If anybody thinks India will get it on a platter, he is daydreaming. The path for India is import plus start JVs. And also develop Kaveri type engines for UCAV and small engines for missiles using completely indigenous efforts.

I said "in JV". You missed the JV part. They do have better industrial discipline than DPSU.

Gov-to-gov deal is only way to move forward right now though it is not the most efficient. Let us see how things shape up. I think LCA Tejas should continue to use GE engines even in mark 2. These engines are really good. While a JV comes out with an engine for AMCA.

Well auto companies like Mahindra and Tata can definitely build aero engines in JV. They will be far more efficient than HAL.

Very good article on Kavery: http://www.business-standard.com/article/opinion/ajai-shukla-engine-of-indigenisation-115122101122_1.html

You at least agree that turbines are not preferred in locomotives. So there must be a reason. Issue is not gearbox. The narrow rpm band means there is waste of fuel in idling etc. Other reason is reliability. Railways prefer electric and diesel ICE.

A land vehicle has a wide powerband. Turbines work best in a narrow rpm range. So it cannot be as simple as you say.

    Kaveri Engine

Marine and power are similar applications. Locomotive is quite different. Being considered is ok, but it did not happen. A marine power plant can be easily adapted for power generation. I was expecting kmgt to be fitted in a warship several years back but it did not happen. I think it never...

The picture does not look like anything Indian. About GTRE, you are mistaken. I know about BHEL. Power generation and locomotives are different applications.

Using gas turbine on land is more difficult compared to sea or air. It is due to dust present in air near land surface. I think KMGT is not installed on any ship so far. Likely it is reliability problem.

    Kaveri Engine

Such engine can be fabricated only by a large scale industry. You need a wide variety of machines and tech expertise. GTRE may be a designer, not a fabricator. Big projects require huge amount of industrial support. Now DRDO has realized that they need to involve private sector for fabrication...

    Kaveri Engine

Kaveri has not completed its development phase. HAL is Kaveri fabricator and HAL's record in aero-engines is nothing to write home about. I don't think it is just specs. It is much more deeper problem.

    Kaveri Engine

I think no ship is yet fitted with kmgt. There must be some reason, likely reliability. India is a big customer of ge marine turbines.
