Jallikattu Ban: Elites vs Local Tradition

Barring a few incidents, I think majority of TN Police has behaved nicely for the most part. No offensive weapons & very few if not no protective gear. They were pulling protesters with bare hands. Imagine if this happened in Western democracies. You'd see show of force.

Jallikattu Ban: Elites vs Local Tradition

We have squandered the opportunity to bring this protest to a good conclusion. As I see it, there was clear lack of communication from the Govt. to tell the protesters, that the law is progressing through the official channels. Repeated promises and failures by the politicians have left lack...

Jallikattu Ban: Elites vs Local Tradition

Look at this. The Supreme Court decision, I think is based on this Government Gazzette. What perplexes me is that why bull (domesticated animal) is included along with other 5 wild one. Guess who was in charge on the Ministry July, 2011? Jairam Ramesh. https://awbi.org/awbi-pdf/notibulls.pdf

Jallikattu Ban: Elites vs Local Tradition

Your statement is neither practical nor useful. Government interfering with Supreme Courts work sets a dangerous precedent. Supreme Court has the jurisdiction as vested by our constitution and works with the laws of the land. The correct way is to pass a new law or through appeals.

Jallikattu Ban: Elites vs Local Tradition

As a Tamil native speaker and an animal lover, SC's ruling makes me sad. Recalling history, first they gave away Kachatheevu & lucrative fishing grounds and now Jallikattu - a traditional bull sport played over many centuries through different monarchies, a sport which has a lot of cultural...
