    I think the whole military fraternity is unsure about the role and possible specifications of future tanks. With proliferation of newer anti-tank missiles, tank designers face tough choices with no obvious answers.

    US and Saudis are allies - so the discussion is hypothetical. Saudis have Abrams. Merkava, Leopard are heavy tanks. Merkava is designed to cross Suez Canal. Leopard is being used in Afghanistan. The weight issue is a red herring thrown around by army for not so noble reasons.
