    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

@aditya g Any assault rifle caliber is a compromise between range, weight and stopping power. Also having single or multiple calibers is a compromise. A decision needs to be taken we need to stick with it. Indecision is a problem. @WolfPack86 The best way to deal with import lobbies is to kick...

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

I think you got my question wrong. Some modern rifles have features to make rifles ambidextrous in the battlefield without use of tools. My question was - is it worth the money? If they be configured to be used by a left handed person by using tools, isn't that good enough?

How much important is the ambidextrous features of assault rifles in actual warfare?

Folding and reactractable buttstock + pitcanny rails..the metal magazine will probably get replaced later... aesthetically pleasing...what's not to like :)

Indegeneous weapon system means the ability of the country to manufacture the same locally - the manufacturer need not be a government entity. The goal is to make the process insulated from technology denials, sanctions and outside pressures. This is a practical requirement for maintaining...

@hammer head Every weapon system design has trade-offs. Long stroke pistons have higher and need lower maintenance at the cost of higher recoil and greater weight. Short stroke has the opposite. Direct impingement systems are maintenance prone. Same apply for open bolt vs closed bolt systems...

@hammer head Ergonomic improvements to existing designs can be done incrementally after receiving feedback from the army. Insas has a long stroke gas operating rotating bolt system similar to AK for high reliability. What is of concern is the Indian army calling for international tenders at the...

I was referring to the recent army tender where none of the foreign rifles could make the cut. I see the Americans using American rifles, the Chinese using Chinese rifles, Russian, British and French all using indegeneous rifles - all of those rifles had problems which got gradually rectified...

Indian guns outperformed foreign guns in recent trials. Foreign guns may look shiny and good but are generally useless and don't deliver in Indian conditions in Siachen and Thar. Guns for Indian soldiers are meant for shooting and killing the enemy in battle, not winning beauty contests.

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

I don't think Jaitley will approve foreign rifles when we have this. No self-respecting army worth its salt fights with foreign rifles

Drum mags are unreliable....more rounds mean more work for the spring...which means more failure and jamming

The shiny western rifles don't work in Siachen and Thar - army keeps learning this in circles

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Sorry for the rant and nitpicking...I know it doesn't make a difference performance-wise..but is it too difficult to incorporate full-length pitcanny rails in Indian rifles on both top, bottom and sides - for Insas, MSMC or MCIWS - modern rifles seem to provide that....it's just...neat...

MSMC / JPVC - love the indigenous effort, but not sure who will use it. Special forces are moving to Tavor. Israel has replaced Uzi with Micro Tavor, which is compact but packs a more powerful punch. Army will probably go for 7.62*51 chambered Tavor. NSG commandos use P90, because of higher...
