True, but still, engine commonality with navy fighters as well as whole AMCA & MWF fleet is a big thing. That may be reason enough. Being navy optimised may play in its favour. Typhoon really don't have any chance, but Rafale could end up with only piecemeal order of 36 like Mirage-2000 did...

Don't be so sure... It could be F-18, which has a decent naval version too, that we need about 5 dozens. Also AMCA & Tejas Mk2 will almost certainly be powered by the same engine as F-18.
