    Astra BVRAAM

Of course it exists, they have been testing it for years. The question is if it is being mass produced. It is odd that there are no pictures of it in active units.

    Astra BVRAAM

It isn't a hot launch VLS, it is a cold launch canister that can't be quad packed as the launch requires an explosive charge, nor does it have anywhere to vent the exhaust. The 40N6E is massive compared to the rest of them, you will know what the canister looks like when you see it.

    Astra BVRAAM

I watched the entire 70th anniversary parade but never saw 40N6E. That must mean they don't have it considering how much they like to show off their new toys.

    Astra BVRAAM

Do you have some pics of it in service with active units? The Diplomat article says it is unclear whether 40N6E is even in serial production.

    Astra BVRAAM

I mean the 40N6E missile. China has not recieved theirs and there are no reports of them being delivered to active S-400 regiments. It makes it a useless purchase if it if just a glorified S-300 PMU-2.

Have they actually started shipping those yet?

So is the R-37M which makes little need for Russia to invest in Novator. If it was so easy you would have had it long ago.

    Astra BVRAAM

Novator did not receive the investment needed to complete its development. Russia was developing their own and IAF had been eyeing Meteor the entire time.

All R-77 and Derby should be replaced with thousands of orders for Astra. This is the single biggest breakthrough that India can use to ween itself off of foreign missile dependence.

    Astra BVRAAM

Losing India will be a huge blow for the Tactical Missile Corporation. They were their largest foreign client. Now that Astra has an indigenous seeker they can't even sell that.

    Astra BVRAAM

ASRAAM is the replacement for R-73, Astra is the replacement for R-77. The R-73 is actually a competent missile, it is the one that shot down the F-16.

    Astra BVRAAM

My only question is why did they just place a huge order for R-77s when they have this coming out?

    Astra BVRAAM

86km is the max that has been demonstrated, in order to achieve that it has to cruise at low Mach. The doctrine of the missile is to use low thrust with a blue flame not to show up on TWR and then speed up at the last second to nail the target. The faster it cruises the less range it has.

The OP of this thread among other things.

    Astra BVRAAM

Yes, but at what cruise speed? Everything I am looking at says it is so slow any fighter that turns at BVR ranges can outrun it.

    Astra BVRAAM

They released a graph in the promotional video which had it at twice the range of Novator and three times the range of AIM-120D.

That is the same work that went into testing the Derby as the integration of both are the same. They did not test fire the ER or even run captive trials. There has never been a test firing of the ER anywhere, much less on the LCA. Astra is the indigenous option with sufficient range, it is...

    Astra BVRAAM

It is no secret, if it happens it is published in the annual ADA report much less open media.

    Astra BVRAAM

2015 report and no actual test... that should tell you it isn't happening.

    Astra BVRAAM

Derby was successfully tested, Derby ER has not. Why even waste time talking about it when you make Astra? That is the BVRAAM going on Tejas, not Derby.
