Far left is a proper sword blade. This might be the earliest sword found in India.

Interesting to see that straight swords were the most common types of sword in South India in the medieval era (800-1500 AD). I had always wondered what chola era swords would have looked like in Tamil Nadu. These "hero stones" from that era, from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, give a very clear...

During the first arab invasions, when the Gurjara Pratihara was fighting the arabs, what sort of swords and armour were our guys equipped with? In fact, what was the standard Indian armour (or lack thereof), when ghaznavi and other turkic tribes invaded in the 1200s-1300s?

You wear cotton beneath the chainmail. And yes, discomfort is there, but you are at a major advantage when slashing attacks don't work on you. Only a thrust from a sword or spear can break through chainmail, and that too not that deeply. The central asian armies wore chainmail as standard even...

Very interesting. Do you know if those were used in any wars? From what time period are they?

I specifically mentioned that chainmail is still suitable for hot weather. It was used extensively in the deserts and jungles too. And even if there is some discomfort, it is worth being impervious to slashing attacks. Of course breastplates and helmets would have been a very big hassle, and not...

    Ancient Indian Empires and Weapons

I was talking about ancient India, before the medieval era. But yeah, even medieval and later armies didn't have armour as standard. Which is weird considering we had no shortage of steel. At least chainmail is still convenient even in hot weather.

One reason for that is geography. Central Asian nomadic horse archery requires large, flat open spaces to be effective. India at that time was covered almost entirely in jungle, far more than what we see today, especially in North India. This allowed our guys to bring them in close for melee...

Yes, there are account of scythian mercenaries in the Gupta army. That should explain it. But unfortunately horse archery was not indegenized into Indian practice, and we paid for it dearly when the central asians arrived.

Btw, linybeige, skallagrim and scholagladiatoria are I think the three biggest channels on YouTube concerning medieval and ancient weapons and combat. You guys should check them out.

    Ancient Indian Empires and Weapons

I had posted a question to three YouTubers, linybeige, scholagladiatoria, and skallagrim, all asking them if they had any info on ancient Indian swords, before the medieval era, and any info on what armour was used by infantryman, if any. Because the famous curved tulwar was introduced in India...
